Ustup, Jamesi Bonde, přicházejí Clever a Smart 😎😎

Pracovat na těchhle španělských kultovkách je radost.

První díl je venku, druhý v tisku, třetí rozpracovaný, čtvrtý podepsaný.

Těšte se na hybridní hantecíček, zpotvořenou němčinu, slovní hříčky vázané na obraz (dík, komikse ❤️) a originální citoslovce od mého manžela, protože já nikdy nevím, co to dělá za zvuk, když někdo třeba maluje barvou zeď. @stepan ví, že "šmrdli šmrdli". 🤷‍♀️

nice! Jako děti jsme je doma měli ve francouzštině, a pak už jsem nikdy nezjistil, odkud vlastně jsou. někomu letos udělám radost:)

A long two days of coding, but I've finally got a good method of sending #Grafana and #Cloudflare alerts to #XMPP set up: github.com/deuill/webhook-gate…

A number of similar projects exist, but none that could set up multiple pipelines/gateways. Hopefully this is useful to someone; blog-post covering the setup here, including deployment on the Google Cloud Run free tier, is coming soon!

We followed AIPAC’s money trail to reveal how its political spending impacts the balance of power in Congress. theintercept.com/2024/10/24/ai…
in reply to The Intercept

In two years, AIPAC has become one of the largest outside spenders in congressional elections. We’ve chronicled its power through coverage of individual races, but never before has AIPAC’s massive outflow of money been analyzed in sum. interc.pt/3A8nTAH
in reply to The Intercept

Ahead of 2024 and amid growing public outrage over Israel’s war on Gaza, AIPAC made a bold pronouncement: Through its United Democracy Project arm and AIPAC PAC, it would spend $100 million on elections, about one-sixth of what outside groups spent on the 2020 presidential election. interc.pt/3A8nTAH

Wonder if any other #Blind #iOS 18.2 beta 1 users are seeing a serious #VoiceOver regression?
I suspect this relates to a specific kind of list control, but in certain apps, as I flick left or right through items, VoiceOver just goes silent on certain items. Sometimes, if you flick left to the previous item and then right to get back to the item that wasn’t speaking before, you hear the item, at other times you don’t, and the only way to hear the currently focussed item is to perform a three-finger single tap.
I am seeing this after trying several voices, and making a few other changes that I thought might work around the problem. So far, I haven’t found a fix.
I am seeing this in a list of articles in the Lire RSS Reader, it’s happening a little here in Mona, and it is also reproduceable if I go into VoiceOver settings and flick through the items in the What’s New in VoiceOver screen.
It is speech only. If you have a Braille display connected, you can read the item in Braille even when VoiceOver doesn’t speak it.
I’d be curious to know if others are seeing it, because if it is widespread, it could be a reason for those who rely heavily on their iPhones to give the public beta a miss assuming this first build goes out to public beta.
in reply to Jonathan Mosen

Yep, I can confirm this. Often see it in Settings even. I think it’s temporary though,.
in reply to victor tsaran

@vick21 Oh yeah, we’ve been working with Apple on this one, should be fixed for the next build.

We fight for our rights to vote. Ballot Marking Devices (BMDs) help blind people vote privately and independently. However, our surveys show that one-third of all poll workers do not know how to operate BMDs and that some blind and low-vision voters are not familiar with BMD accessibility features. So, to solve this problem, we have produced videos that demonstrate how to use BMDs. You can watch the videos at nfb.org/vote

Guys actually really excited for 18.2 Can anyone do a demo of Siri with UK voices, wonder if they updated them to the new LLM based model. Also how good is Chat GPT integration? Really hoping they give access to other providers in the coming months, but OAI is a great start.
in reply to Zachary Bennoui

I don’t know about the actual demo, but I will be posting as I learn things.

Aplausos à maltinha que anda por aí a queimar autocarros. Conseguiram fazer com que em vez de se falar do assassinato de um cidadão com quatro tiros só se fale dos autocarros queimados.

Estão de parabéns. Sim senhor. Palminhas.

Who at the #BBC made the decision to give a platform to "Hello. I'm Michael Gove...."?

Was it Tory Tim, the DG? Or maybe Robbie Gibb on the Board, former propagandist to Theresa May?

We've only just got rid of the odious Vote Leave creep, because he was too cowardly to face his constituents.

He's an EMPLOYEE of the owner of GBNews, and editor of the Tory in-house magazine. Let him use those platforms to try & rehabilitate himself. Not our licence-funded state broadcaster.

@cachondo i chose the cheaper but less satisfying instant "off" button. Still wondering which criterion out of "inform, educate & entertain" that #BBC chiefs think giving #Gove free airtime meets.

There’s very little as satisfying as squeezing a roasted head of garlic into a pot. Also, very little as painful, as the outer layers peel away and you start feeling the roasted parts with your fingers…

How to Use diff3 Command for File Merging in Linux linuxtoday.com/blog/how-to-use…

A friend has loaned me an old MIDI DJ mixing desk for my kids to tinker with. I've installed VirtualDJ, which is free for personal use. But it turns out this is a "professional" deck, and needs a license to use. This is a 16 year old deck which I don't think any professional DJ would be seen dead using now.

@eythian @phs I hadn't heard of Mixxx. Installed and it works with this VCM-100 nicely. Now to make a mapping for my Oxygen Pro Mini as well.

Thank you!

I wish there were more indie GNOME apps (including for example Shortwave, Pika backup, Authenticator, and Monophony) available in the main #Fedora RPM repositories, because waiting 30 minutes for flatpak to download 1 gigabyte of runtimes' delta updates (out of multiple GBs) on a slow Internet connection in rural or under-developed areas (or on mobile data connections), for a 10 megabytes app, is absolutely not fun.

in reply to Jessica Dail

@KE8UPE I don't have a URL for their archives. Have you tried finding it through a search engine?

A reminder to go take a walk. I didn’t know how much I needed to do this the other day until I was out in the sunshine, captivated by fall color in the neighborhood.

Wow, ChatGPT stuff in 18.2 is actually quite nice… I don’t understand the reason for some of the feature names, e.g. “comment lines” to send a pic to ChatGPT from the camera, but OK for now, can live with that.

No matter what else you hear, this election is now pretty much all about turnout. The number of genuinely "undecided" voters is tiny, and most of them probably won't even vote. There is a tremendous amount of smoke being blown, almost entirely from the GOP. It is telling how the GOP in particular is gearing up to battle in court, suggesting that their own internal polls do not give them confidence about winning the actual election at the electoral college.

I finally after six months of on and off research figured out a way to start Steam in big picture mode that actually works! All you have to do is go into Steam's properties and add this string to the end of your target steam shortcut. -start steam://open/bigpicture Here's what mine looks like for reference. Your steam install path might be different than mine. D:\steam\Steam.exe -start steam://open/bigpicture I may or may not be dancing on my couch right now because this actually works and I'm so pleased. I hope this helps someone! Feel free to boost for reach :)

Today I used the app 'Riverside' for the first time on the Mac.
I do not think much of their interface where VoiceOver's concerned, that's for sure.
Audio quality, no problem. Interface needs a lot of work.

Is it hypocritical to fear Absolute Persistence as a backdoor but trust Apple’s ecosystem control? Both offer deep access, but it’s about perception: people trust brands differently. Absolute tech, used for security, isn't just for enterprises but consumers too. It’s a reminder that we often accept the same tech under different labels, based on who we trust more. Been thinking about this a lot. And although Absolute Persistance isn't activated or installed on all machines, it's there on many.
in reply to Tamas G

looking at the Absolute client, it's very small and phones home your location to the Absolute app. If your machine is stolen, as long as a police report gets filed and it cannot be recovered in 90 days, they'll give you the price of your laptop for a new one. You do have to attach proof of a police report. Apple's "persistance" activation tech is hidden within the security chip, so maybe harder to hack, but even more impossible to remove. Both can be deactivated by device owners themselves.
in reply to Tamas G

Absolute and Apple also both offer options for locking the device and displaying the message. (I wish Absolute had the option to play a sound, but at the basic level the lock and recovery process offered by both is similar.) Sure, could people hack Absolute's module to redirect the endpoint more easily? Probably, depending on firmware access, and this is where fearing Absolute has more argument to hold. At the same time, it's a slippery slope: As we know, M-series chips have gotten hacked before

Thought I'd share this funky little ringtone/loop/whatever one might want to use it for, inspired by working through @ToniBarth's guide on the #Reaper pitch cursor. Thoughts and boosts welcome.

In 2021, Spotify launched Wellness week, where we get off work for most of the company as a time to recharge, reset. (hrblog.spotify.com/2021/11/01/…) and has continued yearly since, which makes me super glad to work at a place where mental health gets recognition to this level. Next week is no work for me (and many of my colleagues) so I'll be able to get a break from most things code-related. I will not wrap myself up in some random hobby project! Need to relax.

Bluesky has raised a $15m series A

This just in time for the weekend, so we’ll be treated to endless tirades about the satanic rites of venture capital

and why the One True Way of building a pure and decent social platform is a grumpy dude paid a terrible wage to ignore user feedback

bsky.social/about/blog/10-24-2…

in reply to bsky: @daniloc.xyz

I'll be happy to start sending money to developers of fediverse software who *don't* ignore user feedback.
in reply to Matt Campbell

The problem with VCs is that they'll want their outsized payday, and sooner or later, they'll push through whatever enshittification is necessary to make that happen. At least with crowdfunding, there's some chance that we can contribute to developing good software and a healthy network for its own sake.

This letter written by Charles Babbage in 1840 is fascinating ...

... since it appears to be his earliest ever attempt to describe computational recursion in plain language

He *had* to use plain language -- the very concepts he was struggling to enunciate didn't yet have names

As Bruce Sterling puts it, this passage is “a breathless, painful description of the unique ability of software to operate on itself”

I've donated to #SuperSwingDistricts, a strategy for donating to local candidates in important races that are also likely to "turn out" many voters who wouldn't have voted for the federal candidate otherwise. Thanks @glyph for building and sharing this 💜

Please take a look, this strategy seems compelling to me:
