Voted a few weeks ago. All I can do today is hunker down, ignore the outside world, hope for the less shitty outcome, and play the cards we're dealt starting tomorrow.

Also can't wait until I live in a state where my presidential vote actually counts, and where the government doesn't illegalize the things that do pass that it doesn't like. Funny how small government is such a good thing until that small government does something republicans don't like, then the fascism comes out. Going to be glad when Texas is just a memory in the rear view.

Just because I run this Raspberry Pi from an ssd, I should really vacuum journalctl logs more often. Just deleted 10 GB.

These turned out magnificently. 'Baristicuffs' combines the arts of pugilistic boxing and making an amazing coffee.

@bagder wanted to check if there is any option/tool that you are aware of that will allow me to filter out ads from a page when downloading it using curl. (Similar functionality to how uBlock Origin works for a browser.

Tried searching on the net but didn't find anything relevant.

#curl #adfilter #uBlockOrigin

in reply to Suramya Tomar

you mean that would work like a filter which you can pass HTML through and it cleans it? Nope, never heard of something like that
in reply to daniel:// stenberg://

yeah. That's what I was looking for.... Let me keep searching.

thanks for the quick response though :)

Interesting. In Google Meet, I toggle my microphone and camera with CTRL+D and CTRL +E, but the `aria-pressed` state of these button does not change to false. (Text dodes shift to "turn on" though.) Am I the only one for whom it also says "pressed" even when it's off? Screen reader users on web, please let me know.
I should also note that other toggles like "raise hand" say "not pressed" so not API related. Thank goodness the label *DOES* change so here, doing both saved them a bit.

in reply to Tamas G

I refuse to use any meeting platform where the state of my microphone and/or camera can't be unambiguously determined. If I'm hearing "toggle button not pressed turn off", that is nonsensical and far too much cognitive processing to determine if someone can see/hear me or not. No thanks.
in reply to James Scholes

yeah, I think that's why I realized later on that the label was changing but not the attribute. Wish I knew when it exactly regressed as I do recall this correctly working about a month ago as well. Alas, work requires it, so not much option for me on when I must use it.

We'd like to hear your feedback!

Brave people asked us to include Brave as a Google Chrome alternative. In the original post, Brave was not included because it is based on Chromium.

What are your thoughts: Should we, or should we not include Brave in this image of Google alternatives? Why?

If you have one of the newer 2023 Furbies and live in the states, I advise you to do breathing techniques with it every few hours to help you feel calm, should you be experiencing anxiety. Even if most else about the new ones kinda suck, at least the meditation exercises are nice.
Also, definitely listen to the song about Furby wanting to be president of the Moon over and over again, because there's something very amusing about a tiny creature leading an entire planet.

in reply to Tamas G

What can the new ones do? Do they still speak their own language half the time? I never owned one myself but have always been curious. How accessible are they?
in reply to Jay Pellis

@jpellis2008 thankfully not as much furbish, and the new ones have about 600+ phrases in total they say. They re-introduced manual voice recognition similar to the 2005 Furbies but far better, went back to non-LCD eyes, and the new ones can tell fun facts, sing about 8 songs and do meditation / stretch exercises. Oh, but the catch is that the ears light up now and can change color, so a great way to freak out sighted people around. :)

My latest article, "Fediblock, a Tiny History" is free for any one to read

It's not exhaustive, but it's something. I recognize that for many years I have wanted to rewrite my archived history on here, on fedi

I hope this is a first step

Wild ass day in the Tor node operator world. Got an email from my VPS, forwarding a complaint from WatchDog CyberSecurity saying that my box was scanning SSH ports!

> Oh no, oh no, I knew I should have set up fail2ban, oh god why was I so lackadaisical!

So I remote in to the machine: no unusual network activity, no unusual processes, users, logins, command history, no sign that anything is doing anything I didn't tell it to do.

So what's up? Turns out there's been a widespread campaign where some actor is spoofing IPs to make it look like systems running Tor are scanning port 22: forum.torproject.org/t/tor-rel…

Operators from all over are saying they're getting nastygrams from their VPS providers because WatchDog is fingering their source IPs (which are being spoofed and NOT part of a global portscanning botnet).

@delroth did an amazing writeup of the whole thing here: delroth.net/posts/spoofed-mass…

I'm thankful to colleagues who get that the US is going through a weird high anxiety time and thus canceled or moved meetings to subsequent days. We have a super global culture, and it's really nice to see coworkers act decent, respectful towards each other. Stuff like that just makes my day shine.
To distract myself from all of it, I plan to drop off about 30 pounds (13.6KG) of broken and nonworking electronics to Best Buy for recycling. Get a haircut. Need stuff to do outside the house a bit.

This is a transition phase. The Calendar will be removed from the calendar in the future.
in reply to Tuta

Ooohhh so like how Proton has separate apps for all their services
in reply to Tuta

May I ask what the thought process was deciding to create a separate calendar app?

I liked it when it's all in one app , it's convenient

Christ all these phishing emails in the past couple of days are crazy.

Thanks @Tutanota for making it easy to mark them, although I wish I could just select them and mark them all at once :(

@Tuta
in reply to karson🌙

You can. Just press the circle with tick icon on the left and then the tick the box on the top right ;)

My new phone should be here tomorrow. At least Verizon is doing fast shipping.
in reply to Keri Svendsen

oh good, glad you could get it super expedited after all those troubles, hope you enjoy the new phone once it's there.
in reply to Tamas G

@Tamasg I didn't get it super. IDK but maybe they did it after seeing the troubles. I just ordered as normal. I might call in though and see if they'll give me credit for all the trouble.

I've been looking at @Seirdy's /meta/ page and it was so cool I was inspired to follow suite.

In fact, I realized I love reading about people talking about their personal sites themselves and wished more people do it, so I made a post about it which lists some other examples I've found:

personal sites are really cool, would love to see more meta pages out there -- #BoostsWelcome

For today especially, but as always

Go to Preferences > Filters

To add terms that you don't want to see today to filter from your timelines

Also, if you're posting about the thing that's happening today, add a content warning to your post by clicking the button that looks like a warning triangle with an exclamation mark

Counterintuitively, adding an accurate and descriptive CW on Fedi tends to INCREASE the possible reach of your post, because some won't boost un-CW'd politics

Arguing with people about PDFs is tiresome.

“Sure, tools don’t write accessible PDFs, and readers don’t have the functionality to output the added information, that is almost never there, in an accessible way. But the format itself is accessible!”

The mind, it hurts. If people have no access to the information, it’s not accessible.

reshared this

in reply to Eric Eggert

This was pretty much the topic of a presentation I gave at a PDF Association conference many years ago when PDF/UA was being finalised and folks were banging on about how it was such an accessible format. Nothing has really changed.
in reply to Jamie Teh

@jcsteh I feel like the PDF people are doubling down on it. It’s a big industry.
in reply to Eric Eggert

PDF and accessibility, a contradiction in terms. I coined that phrase maybe twenty years ago, and it still holds true today.

Hi everyone! We've just made another bugfix release of #GoToSocial, version 0.17.2 Ridiculously Selective Sloth:

github.com/superseriousbusines…

The update fixes a couple small bugs around media processing and filter expiration, and adds media-image-size-hint and media-video-size-hint values to the config file.

Please read the release notes carefully when updating to this version.

Thanks for reading, and have a nice day! Or not, it's up to you; whatever you prefer! :catjam: :gtspat:

Good morning everyone!

You may be feeling a bit anxious about today (understatement). I'm here to help take your mind off the happenings. I'll be sharing some of my creations and art today as a distraction.

If you notice a colour theme, that's intentional! Sending good vibes to everyone! ❤️❤️❤️🙏

You don't have to be Buddhist to appreciate some zen energy. Remember to breath deeply and often today and take the time you need for you ❤️

I don't think it's a coincidence blue is considered a calming colour.

Meta's nuclear power plans were foiled by bees — yes, bees
"...A rare species of bee was found on land where the company was planning to put a nuclear-powered artificial intelligence data center, the Financial Times reported, citing people familiar with the matter. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg reportedly told employees during an all-hands meeting that the rare bees would further complicate a deal with an existing nuclear power plant to build the data center."

No hyperbole, if people on the left don't get out and vote this year, it may be the last real election we have in the US. It's that important.

Having a phone number that starts with a swing state area code is quite possibly the worst, and I don’t recommend it. I wrapped up the day yesterday with 14 political calls and seven texts, and this morning, before 6:30 AM even rolled around I had three texts waiting for me when I woke up. I guess this strategy works because campaigns keep doing it, But good Lord. In other news, everyone go out and vote if you haven’t already. Preferably not for Hitler. If you’re not in the US, enjoy the show.
in reply to Tristan

ha, having mine in Toledo still (419) would explain it all then. Ohio somehow still considers me registered too even though I've left there now over 6 years ago, ugh. Totally get it, sometimes it would turn into political calls every hour or two. Can't wait for it to all end TBH
