Looks like Dino is enabling #OMEMO by default for the next release¹. I think that was the last of the major #XMPP clients to do so. Hopefully we can now put the "But XMPP is not encrypted by default" debate to rest.

You are encouraged to self-host #XMPP but you are not required to. We try to make self hosting as easy as possible. I think it is one step above hosting your own website but way easier than hosting your own e-mail.

If you are medium tech-savvy I recommend getting your own domain and going for an XMPP provider that let’s you bring your own domain (for example: account.conversations.im/domai…) this gives you the flexibility to self host or switch providers later.

Hi! Is there any chance we can encourage you to trend #NVIDIA when that's the company you mean, please? I know what their NASDAQ handle is, but #NVDA is much more widely known as the name of the screen reader we make and the #NVDA hashtag is very widely used for the screen reader. It will save both our communities polluting each other's feeds. If you'd like to find out more about the screen reader, our website is nvaccess.org/ - Thank you!
in reply to NV Access

@NVAccess I understand your concern, but I cannot change the names of listed securities on stock exchanges when I need to discuss them explicitly. If I search for NVDA, I only find NVIDIA’s stock quotes , not your product NonVisual Desktop Access (NVDA) , which has been listed since 1999. Similarly, searching for Blender yields unrelated results. However, I rarely mention these, so it might happen once or twice a year, I will try if can avoid.

The first segment of this week’s New Yorker Radio Hour is eye opening… #NVDA #JensenHuang

in reply to Dave Spector

Interestingly, we don't. I think that while a couple of accounts like yours, post now & then on NVIDIA with NVDA as a hashtag, no-one who actually follows or searches for hashtags would ever look for NVDA for information on NVIDIA - and really that is the ENTIRE point of hashtags - and why I saw your post in the first place. We see dozens to hundreds of messages a week using #NVDA to talk about the screen reader - which is why I reached out, so we DON'T pollute each other's feeds.

Hi NVAccess@fosstodon.org, I have a question regarding the future of NVDA Remote. Will you still be able to host your own servers, and if yes, are there already instructions etc. on how to do this? I only found github.com/nvaccess/remote-ser…, is this what I want?
in reply to NV Access

You can host your own within NVDA by selecting "Server" from the first group of radio buttons inside the Connect dialog. That is most appropriate setup for controlling systems on your own local network, and is what we were discussing recently.

As for hosting a separate relay that is accessible to multiple people on the internet, I have no experience with that. @jonathan859 @KaraLG84

Content creators: I know you have other things to worry about, but could you please back off on the amount of audio noise reduction you use? Unless you're in a noisy environment, it's not necessary. The default preset for it is usually way too heavy-handed, and sucks all the life out of your audio. It's especially bad when we purposely want to hear something other than your voice, whether it's a machine you're demonstrating or the natural environment you're in. youtube.com/watch?v=QaACdEXIqJ…

I mean, you *can* find nerdier content on that site but I do my very best to scare "normies" off.

Cool, Fennec is interested in #UnifiedPush support

[1]We will probably have it on Fennec before it gets upstream (if it does 🤞).

That means UnifiedPush will be available for "installable web applications". So we'll have push notifications with some new apps !

Exploring an Aira Call: Tools, Support, and What to Expect

Have you ever been curious about what tools our Visual Interpreters use during a call? What they’re able to do for you, what they can send, and what they can store in your profile? In this next video in our Aira Tutorials Series, we got a Visual Interpreter on the phone to walk us through it all.

In this video, we cover what to expect when a Visual Interpreter answers your call, what they can see through your camera, and how they describe it. You'll learn how they can take and send photos, customize your profile with helpful details, assist with safe navigation, and use tools like screen share for desktop tasks. We also explain how access offers work, how to use the in-call chat, and when to enable privacy mode.

Need more info? Visit aira.io, call us at 1-800-835-1934, or email support@aira.io. Our customer care team is available daily from 6 AM–6 PM Pacific Time to assist you.

Apple says that beginning today it will offer three months of Apple TV+ to both new and returning customers for $2.99 per month, a discount from the $9.99 standard price. The company says the offer is valid through April 24.

Keyboard.io makes high-end angled and "split" keyboards

they wrote a letter to customers explaining how Trump's new tariffs will affect them

it's bad news for them -- prices have already shot up, and new tariffs Trump is threatening would *double* prices

their description of "why building something as complex as a keyboard is an inherently cross-border enterprise" is really interesting

they have to ship wood to China! that sort of wood isn't readily available there

@tschapajew clone the repository, then simlink the pre-push wherever you want it. Example:
git clone https://git.stormux.org/storm/git-hooks
cd ProjectYouWantToPost/.git/hooks
ln -s path/to/git-hooks/pre-push-fediverse pre-push

Be sure to install and configure toot. it's a command line Mastodon client that also works with Pleroma. It is what handles actually posting to your timeline.

@tschapajew It's a more modern way of writing the shabang line. I discovered it when trying to make audiogame-manager Mac compatible. I was trying to figure out why, even though I was using:
#!/usr/bin/bash

It was calling the old version even though people were installing a later version with homebrew. After some research, I found out tht using:
#!/usr/bin/env interpreter

Is more reliable. Of course, if you're only worried about Linux, which usually has an up to date bash, then:
#!/bin/bash

works just fine. I just got into the habbit of using env from that experience. I tend to use it for all shabangs now, python3, perl, bash etc.

*sigh*
