On a essayé, avec Karine Abiven, de réunir des collègues de différentes matières (et de différents pays!) pour décrypter ce qui est devenu un récit de société contemporain - et qui a, comme tout récit de société à la mode, a ses intérêts et ses points aveugles
Le récit de transfuge de classe est devenu un de ces récits "disponibles" qui circulent, qui influencent la manière dont nous percevons notre entourage, dont nous nous définissons, dont nous essayons de donner une cohérence aux évènements.
Ces récits comportent un intérêt certain : nous offrir des concepts et des catégories narratives dans lesquels nous pouvons nous reconnaître. Mais ils peuvent aussi orienter voire biaiser notre regard et notre discours sans que nous nous en rendions compte… On décrypte ça dans ce numéro!
Par exemple, j'ai écrit un article sur le décalage entre la mobilités sociale réelle et la mobilité sociale majoritairement représentée dans les récits de transfuge que nous connaissons - très souvent exceptionnelle, ascendante, intellectuelle journals.openedition.org/conte…

I am back online! 🎉 On friday at cca 12:00 we had a partial electricity outage in half of the city of #Prague and several other areas in #Czechia The electricity came back on friday at 16:00. But internet? #Vodafone was fixing it in my area until now, Sunday 16:30. For a #selfhoster like me is internet outage quite annoying, but now I am back online.
@psh the worst part was their support. You don't know anything. They have the web page to check outages on your address, but it showed all green up until saturday noon. Even though I called them several times to report the outage. And their support line. Uff. Nightmare. First you need to talk to a robot to get to the waiting line. But not the old one "press 6 for internet services". They now have something that recognizes voice inputs. So sometimes I ended up in a loop of "sorry I didn't hear you properly". And after all that, it sometimes just hangs up on you. Terrible.

That way it'd be possible to tell the difference between "fewer vulns in these years because there wasn't time to find them yet" vs "fewer vulns in these years because we're doing something better"
@wolf480pl we can't possibly tell that. I mean, for all we know there are also N additional flaws not yet reported that could completely change the look of that graph a few years in the future. We can never know if we actually improved or if the flaws just haven't been reported yet. Well, until perhaps after 10-12 years or so.
@koalp better tools, more tests and us writing code better code (avoiding certain patterns, using helper functions etc) I think. But the decline is also relatively new, maybe we just haven't found those flaws yet...
@Varpie @varx @koalp I can't recall any, and I did scan the changelogs for 2017 releases but it did not bring any such thing back. We started fuzzing in 2018.
@papush there is no such specific correlation. We do things in the repo to improve things but vulnerabilities are often reported MUCH later so it is hard to tell what has effect, how much and when we can be sure...
who knows. The graph is based on what we know *now* not what we knew back then. We always polish, improve and add tests. There was nothing magic done in that period. Just iterative improvements.
I see that cull has a buffer abstract (dynbuf) which I assume is safe. Why does this not eliminate oob errors? Limitations of its API which make it unsuitable in some situations? Other reasons? Or just old code which was written before this abstraction was introduced?
This is something I would like to try to understand a little bit better. I started to use safe buffer / string abstractions in new code and I did not encounter any obstacle so far (except, of course, more work to build those types)
Sorry, if I am annoying, I just want to understand this better. I do not understand why so much C code does hand-rolled buffer and string management with open-coded pointer arithmetic, when this can all be abstracted away behind safe interfaces. What am I missing? Interfacing to external libraries certainly then needs conversion which could still cause issues, but this is true also for memory safe languages.
@uecker a) there is no standard "safe interface" for strings in C, it's all handrolled or a 3rd party library. b) we all do our best with limited time and energy and it is an ongoing life that keeps changing. c) feel free to help out
I am trying to help on the "no standard" point (and also compilers), this is why I am curious. Maybe social media is not ideal to discuss this, I assume there are many practical issues. But you experience would be extremely valuable. Maybe you have some time for some discussion at some point?

For context, @bagder and I had a quick exchange on C++ in the cURL code base some years ago, with the result it wasn't desired, and for understandable reasons (TL;DR).
Of course it means I didn't get to submit some patches, which makes a a tiny bit sad still. Hence the, uh, let's call it a tongue in cheek comment 😊
@jens @isotopp C++ would not really have improved anything as all the C mistakes can be done with C++ as well. After my years with Firefox C++ I am scarred and can only think of all the harm C++ can do. Handing over firearms to toddlers kind of harm.
Seriously, turning this into a teachable skill would be useful and probably also convert a number of learnings into something that can be referenced, named or addressed (and that would be useful to address other codebases and make comparisions).
