for the little story, getting to that GUADEC is the only time I missed a flight.

[1]And it was not my fault. It was the moron at the SNCF that sold me a TGV fare with compulsory reservation on a train they had cancelled.

And let me tell you which customer service was more customer oriented. Hint. It was the SNCF (railroad) it was Air France. They rebooked me without fee. They knew the SNCF was shittier.

It was in 2003.

On the off chance anyone is familiar with MikroTik, I have a question. I'm between the RB5009 and the L009. The latter is much cheaper and less powerful, but should still do what I need. I think. 1GBPS is enough for me, and the most intensive things I plan to do are Wireguard for several clients and two or three VLANs. I like the price of the L009, but I don't want to get something now I'll only have to upgrade in a year. I don't know if the RB5009 is worth it, or is massively overpowered.

@Jamie Teh @Kyle Borah @Alex Hall I have used mikrotik devices a lot in my previous job. The company I've worked for had like hundreds of them in production. I've always used SSH and CLI interface to control them. For the home setup I'd recommend going with lower specs mikrotik. Wireguard VPN is not so CPU intensive as compared to other VPNs and tunnels.
The security issues mostly come from the fact router OS allows you to do all ssorts of veird configs like disabling firewall filter rules completelly, or not blocking incoming DNS, NTP traffic whatever.
I would say it's a good think so inside your network you can have all these in place and you should secure mostly edge routers.

They only pay authors 30% in royalties (even if they price above 2.99) when someone buys a book through Amazon COM while not actually living in the US.

That's right. Amazon "steals" 40% of my royalties because the customer is in a different location that the USA.

Why?

Because they can. Because we authors let them get away with that. No other store does this.

Buy direct. Or at least not through Amazon.

@ToniBarth @FreakyFwoof @Scott @cachondo So for processing the video and then saving out the mp3 it internally uses ffmpeg, which is probably why it has no problem with .mov. For playback, I’m not sure what the video player control uses, could be something ancient built-into Windows. It's giving a lot of people trouble, the dev said on the audiogames forum the next version will have a new video player which should be more compatible. For some people what helped is installing the kLite codec pack so you can try that, though it didn't help me on my ARM Windows VM even though the codecs themselves appear to work in the MPCHC that got installed with it, while my physical Windows PC just worked first try.

@FreakyFwoof @ToniBarth @Scott @cachondo Yeah around the time Ivona was bought out by Amazon Harpo was able to get the distribution rights to them for accessibility. They also sell modern Vocalizer voices ala carte on the same page. Nice thing about these is the activation system is a simple offline key, no internet DRM of any kind. I think they might also be more responsive than the official Ivona packages were

@pitermach If you can get the compact variant that works, e.g., from Freedom Scientific since it's an older version, you just need to paste in the its installation folder and replace the values in the registry to point to the the compact variant. Values can be found in the HDR file. I did that for Vietnamese because its compact variant is not as buggy. I didn't think they did, but I don't know. yeah, I don't like the old installers as they install other programs even though I don't want them. I have tried unchecking them, and they still install anyway. they were pretty expensive voices back in 2014. I paid 45 dollars per voice, hents why I only baught two of them.

I am looking at this harpo software thing, and I am looking at voices, and they are saying that the ivona voices are a sail? they want 55 euros for a voice, which converts to I think google said either 64, or 65 dollars. well it looks like it is the voice, plus something called speach to go, for what it looks like. not only that, the vocalizer voices are the same price just for one voice. I know a lot of the vocalizer things you could get you got all the vocalizer voices for I think around 100 US dollars, not 65 for just one voice. ouch! now the ivona ones used to be 45 US dollars for just one voice so that doesn't surprise me, well it does when they call a sail 65 dollars for just one voice. smile.
