The World's 2.75B Buildings in QGIS!

The United Nations (UN) believes there are 4B buildings on Earth. This week, a dataset called "GlobalBuildingAtlas" (GBA) was published by researchers at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) that attempts to estimate this number at being closer to 2.75B

This morning, during some chaos, this zipped by on one of my feeds. Maybe it was here? Maybe it was BlueSky? Hard to overstate how much this made my day.

Open Archiver

@ppatel @chikim And now we’ve finally gotten a Web Search API, ollama.com/blog/web-search#bui…. Good move!
Also, I tried a few cloud LLMs and the latency is quite nice! :)

Here it is, my new, self-hosted home in the #Fediverse running on #GoToSocial! This is really exciting stuff, now I’m truly living the Fedi spirit by supporting decentralization. If you're reading this and don't mind, I'd greatly appreciate a boost of this post to help my tiny new instance discover more servers. Thanks! #NewFedi #FediAdmin #Selfhosting

Thanks so much for clarifying and for the explanations! I was under the impression that boosting would indeed result in my server pulling in more posts from other instances, but I guess that was a misconception on my part having seen others doing this after spinning up a new server. I did follow many of the people who boosted though as a way to say thank-you, so perhaps this actually did help extend my server's reach by extension :-). GTS does not support relays yet sadly, although it is on their roadmap, I only realized it after I'd already configured most things so there was no turning back. That being said though, I do feel GTS is absolutely the right choice for my single-user scenario, setting up Mastodon or one of its forks would likely be overkill for my small Fedi home. That being said, I did find this project which seems interesting, maybe I should look into setting this up: codeberg.org/tante/hypebot

American soybean #farmers are struggling during what should be a standout year. Yields are up, but sales are way down and storage facilities are full. It’s a dire situation that will require government support - or many #farms will not survive. All because of Trump’s #TradeWar. China, our largest #soybean customer is simply not buying from US farmers, after being their biggest customer. And USAID, which has been decimated by the #TrumpAdministration was the second largest customer. #Agriculture is under attack in the USA. And it’s all Trump’s fault. #Ag #FAFO

In Lake County, CA, where I used to live, a restaurant abruptly closed its doors after a Facebook post by the owner was interpreted as a celebration of Charlie Kirk's death. This story in the local paper is a really interesting temperature-taking from a poor, rural part of the US.

If you ever wonder why the Dems don't change and continue to alienate progressives, here you can see it happening in real time.

New centrist think tank in DC has already raised millions and promises to “defy ideological boxes and embrace a mix of positions from across the spectrum."

If you're not aware, that's code for 'make sure the progressives don't have a voice and keep giving the billionaire donors what they want. 🤦‍♂️

Looks like a good part of the UK's public has the good sense to neither trust Tony Blair nor LLMs 😂

I have always avoided politics on here, and even created a NoPolitics tag! But this is simply too important to ignore. Right now, it affects Europe, but if it passes, the whole world could be at risk of it being implemented everywhere. Even for those of us with nothing to hide, who don't deal with sensitive information, it's still a complete and unnecessary invasion of privacy.

this is an incredibly complex discussion and it's almost impossible to get anyone to have a rational discussion about the nuances around it all with people, especially online.

> Denmark is primarily a country for the Danes, Britain primarily a united kingdom for the Brits, and Japan primarily a set of islands for the Japanese.

okay how about the world is primarily a place for humans?

Since he's automatically siding with "locals are scared of cultural change and people different from themselves are rapidly immigrating 🚨" there's no chance of him considering the consequences of past actions by the country or how people different than yourself don't automatically deserve a worse life and should be kept out of your community, etc etc.

✅ See quotes of a status docs.joinmastodon.org/methods/…

Turns out this quotes list is only viewable for own post and by self ("private"?). This means I can't view quotes of posts authored by other folks 🤔

This limited my experimentation a bit, thus the crude UI for now. It should paginate but I'll need more people to native-QP my posts 😂

Also throwing in a quick PR doc fix: github.com/mastodon/documentat…

in reply to Chee Aun 🤔

Handle pasting post links 😮‍💨

Prompt to turn them into quotes only show if:
- Native quote post is supported
- They "look like" post links (same logic as non-native QP link unfurling)
- Still respecting the quote policy of the post (same logic as enabling/disabling the Quote menu)
- There's no media attachment(s) or poll

In his 'Enter the Matrix' talk¹, @mcnesium suggested donating to the Matrix Foundation to address the issue of one company controlling 90% of the ecosystem and spec.

Here's how the foundation spends its money:²

• Administrative overhead
• Operating the matrix.org server
• Director’s salary
• Hosting Matrix Conf

No funds for software development or spec writing.

Hosting the conference (12.5% of budget) is obviously a good investment.

The salaries that we pay to our staff cover such things as:

* facilitating open governance,
* volunteer enablement,
* managing spec releases,
* developing Trust & Safety tooling (which inevitably gets open sourced),
* driving spec changes to improve Trust & Safety,
* and coordinating ecosystem wide updates, such as when vulnerabilities are discovered.

So, funds _do_ go to software development and spec writing.

The Matrix.org Foundation

Trust & Safety does include moderation of Matrix.org, but it also includes research and development of FOSS tools, techniques, and spec changes, and collaboration with contributors and server operators from across the ecosystem, even beyond Matrix.

As conveners for the ecosystem, we're able to leverage the fact that we operate a flagship instance to advance the experience of the open federation for everybody.

That's why Trust & Safety is its own line item.

Gee. Thanks Fediverse.

When I complain about Windows, I literally never thought about running Linux in my life.

As I stare at my shelf full of Linux laptops.

Or look back at my decades of working and playing with Linux systems.

Or the Linux stickers on my desk.

Or ...

Sometimes people just need to use Windows. Or Mac. Or Ubuntu. Or something else you don't like.

Stop being elitist snobs about it when someone complains about the tool they're using. I PROMISE you every single person on this corner of the Fediverse has heard "you should use Linux" a thousand times. They have their reasons to use something else. And they're allowed to complain about it.

This sort of shit is why I hate the FOSS community.

Edit: I felt like registering uselinuxinstead.com/ as a catchall for reasons people may choose not to use a Linux system for their personal use cases. It's as a GitHub Pages so feel free to put issues or PRs if you want to suggest content. L

If I feel more generous later, after making a list of things, I'll also include some links on each section pointing to resources of "okay this was my reason, but maybe if I understood how to do ________ I could give Linux a try."

But the primary point is to have a parked list to hand to folks insisting that you should use Linux for everything and everybody simply because you're frustrated about one specific frustrating thing on MS or Apple or Android or Chromebook or whatever else.
