For when the products are launched, the JAWS scripts for StationPlaylist 6.2, and the new SPL Remote, are available. The layout of this product is quite different to many previous releases, so it is likely that future updates will follow. But they have been used for regular broadcasting and within automation. We have been testing them since 30 September 2025. You should not install them if you are using StationPlaylist 6.11 or earlier. That should be obvious but is worth saying. For this reason, the scripts for both 6.11 and 6.2 are listed on the StationPlaylist page of the company web site and it is likely they will remain there for at least 12 months. 📣THREAD: It’s surprising to me that so many people were surprised to learn that Signal runs partly on AWS (something we can do because we use encryption to make sure no one but you–not AWS, not Signal, not anyone–can access your comms).
Concerning, bc it indicates that the extent of the concentration of power in the hands of a few hyperscalers is way less widely understood than I’d assumed. Which bodes poorly for our ability to craft reality-based strategies capable of contesting this concentration & solving the real problem. 2/
The question isn’t "why does Signal use AWS?" It’s to look at the infrastructural requirements of any global, real-time, mass comms platform and ask how it is that we got to a place where there’s no realistic alternative to AWS and the other hyperscalers. 3/
Running a low-latency platform for instant comms capable of carrying millions of concurrent audio/video calls requires a pre-built, planet-spanning network of compute, storage and edge presence that requires constant maintenance, significant electricity and persistent attention and monitoring. 4/
Instant messaging demands near-zero latency. Voice and video in particular require complex global signaling & regional relays to manage jitter and packet loss. These are things that AWS, Azure, and GCP provide at global scale that, practically speaking, others (in the western context) don’t. 5/
This isn't ‘'renting a server.' It's leasing access to a whole sprawling, capital-intensive, technically-capable system that must be just as available in Cairo as in Capetown, just as functional in Bangkok as Berlin. Particularly given the high stakes use cases of many who rely on Signal. 6/
Such infrastructure costs billions and billions of dollars to provision and maintain, and it’s highly depreciable. In the case of the hyperscalers, the staggering cost is cross-subsidized by other businesses–themselves also massive platforms with significant lockin. 7/
Meaning that infrastructure like AWS is not something that Signal, or almost anyone else, could afford to just “spin up.” Which is why nearly everyone that manages a real-time service–from Signal, to X, to Palantir, to Mastodon–rely at least in part on services provisioned by these companies. 8/
But even if Signal had the billions needed to recreate AWS, it’s not just about money. The talent to run these systems is rare & concentrated. The expertise, the tooling, the playbooks, the very language of modern SRE came out of these hyperscalers, and is now synonymous with 'the cloud.' 9/
o, yes, Signal runs on AWS. It also runs on your phone, which runs on iOS (Apple) or Android (Google). And on Dekstop, via Windows (Microsoft). Each of these presents similar dependencies on large entrenched tech companies, and concomitant barriers and risks. 10/
In short, the problem here is not that Signal ‘chose’ to run on AWS. The problem is the concentration of power in the infrastructure space that means there isn’t really another choice: the entire stack, practically speaking, is owned by 3-4 players. 11/
So, Signal does what we can to provide a service w integrity in the concentrated ecosystem we're working in. We protect your comms w end-to-end encryption, so that we can use AWS and others as a highway across which to send Signal data in ways that don’t let AWS, or anyone else, gain access. 12/
To conclude: my silver lining hope is that AWS going down can be a learning moment, in which the risks of concentrating the nervous system of our world in the hands of a few players become very clear. And that this can help us craft ways of undoing this concentration and creating real choice ❤️ 13/

With respect Meredith, i’m talking about decentralized protocols and their capability to not depend so heavily on the service providers you’re arguing for. Tor Project has shown how possible it is (i used to work there, and it’s spelled Tor not TOR).
I listened to Moxie’s aversions to decentralization for years. That’s what I keep seeing now, with posts like these. I also understand the value of huge cloud providers, I’ve worked for many companies who use them, and have worked for them, and I understand why you depend on them and how important that is to a high quality service. Thank you for all that you all do.
But what conversations does Signal Foundation actually have on the topics of resiliency through decentralization? How much money could you save by allowing the community to take on aspects of the network? How much resiliency and trust could be gained, without losing performance?
@davep @yawnbox Regarding Tor: instant messaging (if you stretch "instant" to cover several seconds which is acceptable in practice) have been successfully ran over Tor and other distributed settings.
Regarding video not relying on a centralized infra: Skype during its Kazaa-/pre-Microsoft- era and its "Super nodes" has been a widely successful example of a video calling software that doesn't rely that much on centralisation (but of course with a completely different security model)

I actually appreciate Signal, e.g., unlike the above example of Skype, it is tolerating 3rd party open source clients, so people like me who neither run Android nor iOS on the smartphone can still communicate with friends).

@daniel Even _IF_ it were possible to create a black box version of "distributed Signal mesh node in a box" that you could run in your basement to help make Signal more tolerant - I mean with enough $ and willpower Im sure it could be done - there's still the question of: if you don't control physical access to the node, there's still potential for attack regardless of how much encryption and protection. Would you ever be able to trust it completely?

A common AI slop pattern in #curl reports we see is when the AI finds an internal function somewhere in libcurl and then generates a POC for the user that uses this internal function in a way that makes it misbehave/crash. But internally we don't use the function like that, and wouldn't, because then it fails.
It's obvious why the AI bug finders are up in arms over this. If they globber up this code and re-uses it in other code bases there WILL be problems there!
So, by not writing all of your internal functions as if they were external, you're making the AI coding tools less useful.
You have this "when all you have is a hammer, everything is a nail" idiom .... using AI for security research to find issues is more like a misunderstood reversed approach ...

Hackerone need to enforce a rule that bug hunters should declare up front which reports are AI with failing to do so carrying severe consequences. Maintainers can then get their own AI to deal with the reports. 😂

Hele, nevím. Předpokládal jsem, že náckové jsou takoví idioti, že neumí uvařit ani čaj. Proto mě překvapuje, že je někdo zaměstnává jako kuchaře. Já nácky prostě nikdy rád neměl a nedokážu jim přisoudit nic pozitivního.
Bohužel znám i takové, kteří z toho nevyrostli ani po založení rodiny. Přitom jedna z teorií je, že to náckovství je přejde právě po založení rodiny. Druhou z teorií zastávají anarchisté - podle nich nácka vyléčí, když dostane přes hubu.
@donbahno Môj spolužiak zo základnej školy bol v tom čase skinhead, podporovateľ kotlebu a obdivovatel tisa a hitlera, neraz bol v tých časoch aj zbitý. Už má 30 rokov, má rodinu, a stále je podporovateľ kotlebu (za ktorého raz aj kandidoval vo voľbách). Takže niektorí z toho nevyrastú ani po založení rodiny, a ani keď dostanú cez hubu.

Jsem si před pár měsíci udělal účet u Moravské zemské knihovny, abych si mohl prohlížet některé archivní materiály online, zaplatil 200 Kč, a teď zjišťuju, že se tím účtem už nepřihlásím. Někde jsem zahlédl informaci, že registrace nestačí, že pak musím do MZA stejně dojít osobně a spárovat svůj účet s mou reálnou identitou. Což jsem samozřejmě neudělal. Nedaří se mi ten postup registrace dohledat, neví někdo z hlavy?
@FreakyFwoof Part of my debugging involves testing on my local machine. Every time i make a change to a page I'm working on causes a full function server to spin up on my machine on port 5000. Same thing happens for Netlify deploy tasks, they spawn and spawn and spawn again. This is actually a good thing because it makes it so I don't have to spend netlify credits when I test stuff. Luckily, your machine serves like 20 knowledge of JSON which Apache serves up on a platter for folks that ned a net schedule. Sadly, onj 3 gets left out in the cold when it comes to my local server madness. Next week, your server gets turned into a fallback, so if my roar box dies for some reason in la, it'll continue sending its little bits of text, lol. JSON is a beautiful thing.

švagrová to nedávno řešila a koupila si ID.3, ale ona to měla jako jediné auto v rodině. S baterií 58 kWh je to podstatně univerzálnější auto než i3. Lidi, kteří do toho vidí, zase říkají, že i3 je stavěná jako nerozbitná a jednoduše opravitelná. Já naštěstí žádný prostor na výběr neměl. Manželka chtěla jen Audi Q4 e-tron. Vybírala čistě na základě vzhledu a pro mě bylo parametrově a cenově přijatelné.
jako druhé EV je ta i3 za mě skvělá volba, ale už se nedá koupit jako nová. Pan Havrla s ní umí divy :). ID.3 je zase univerzální auto. Já jsem si tedy nakonec koupil jako druhé auto zase Y, když jsem zjistil, že se žena Y nevzdá a že to bude moje auto :D. Udělal jsem dobře, dopadlo to tak.

Do 500k seženete nádherné ojeté ID.3. Švagrová za něj dala 420k. 3 roky staré, 40k km, má to tu větší baterku, z výbavy vše obvyklé. Já si auto dovezl z Německa sám, ale ona na doporučení @RezzaBuh využila služeb pana Javorského (e-auta.eu/). Vybrala si auto, zaplatila a pak si jen dojela do Poděbrad pro přepsané auto, o všechno ostatní se postarali a řekli si za to 26 tisíc.

@amir It's a quirk of the way we do things: - Stable versions only update to stable versions.
- Beta and RC versions will update to newer beta or RC versions but not stable. So NVDA 2025.3.1 RC will automatically update to NVDA 2026.1 Beta 1 when it comes out.
The last RC is identical to the final stable version in all but version number - so if you are running NVDA 2025.3.1 RC, you have exactly the same code as someone with NVDA 2025.3.1 (stable), even though it may seem a little odd :)
Thanks for the explanation! As I'm an alpha person, switching to RC or beta has these oddities for me - LOL! Once 64-Bit becomes more stable and a couple more add-ons become compatible, I'll switch to alpha.
@amir It's one of the reasons some people prefer the "Update CHannel Selector" add-on, as it does allow you to more easily jump between channels (note that with that add-on, as we also recommend to anyone doing it manually - say an alpha build comes out today and you install that - if you change your mind and switch back to the stable channel, it WON'T change until the NEXT build for that channel comes out.
@amir This is because NVDA accounts for things which may change when updating - for instance sometimes the format of the settings file changes (eg when we added "Only in edit controls" to speak typed words and characters - those values changed from boolean on or off, to having three states - but it doesn't account for any changes when downgrading.
