Dr. Gladys West,
the pioneering mathematician whose work laid the foundation for modern GPS technology,
has died. She passed away Saturday, surrounded by her loving family. She was 95.
Born into poverty on a Virginia farm during the Jim Crow era, West grew up in a segregated South where opportunity was scarce.
Through determination and extraordinary academic talent,
she graduated first in her high school class and earned a scholarship to Virginia State College (now Virginia State University).
She received her bachelor’s degree in mathematics in 1952 and went on to earn a master’s degree in 1955.
In 1956, West began working as a mathematician at the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Dahlgren, Virginia.
She was only the second African American woman hired at the base and one of just four African American employees at the time.
What followed was a career that would quietly change the world.
Over many years, Jane Plitt, founder and board chair of the Alexandria-based "National Center for Women’s Innovations" (NCWI), made it her mission to put Gladys West on the map
—quite literally.
West’s story became the centerpiece of NCWI’s inaugural work,
culminating in a lavish gala celebrating her 93rd birthday on October 27, 2023.
Emceed by Deborah Roberts, the evening showcased West’s extraordinary contributions,
with West herself declaring,
“This is the best day of my life.”

The guide focuses on the structure of the Discord desktop and web interface from the perspective of someone who knows screen reader basics and can move around a website but struggles with very complex web interfaces.

I can't comment on this from a business perspective. But I do know that I have never been able to connect remotely to any of my computers, either from Windows to Windows or from Android or IOS to Windows, with any commercially made program for the purpose. The only one that works for me is NVDA Remote, which works on all three platforms, with Windows and the NVDA screen reader being a requirement. The limitation, however, is that I can't hear the sound on the controlled computer, nor can I transfer files between it and the controller. Fortunately, I don't really need these features and am happy just being able to control my machines at all. But for those who do need them, RIM allows this, but only for users of JAWS (which costs several hundred dollars/NVDA is free), and the last time I checked, it is also very expensive for an individual user who doesn't require it for work purposes. I'm also not sure if it is cross-platform, so it may only work with Windows. If anyone knows of a free, accessible solution that works with NVDA, please let me know.

RIM should work with NVDA. I found this guide on their site: manual.getrim.app/en/windows/w… Otherwise, I'm glad NVDA Remote Access is working for you - we do have a request to add file transfer ability, but no timeline on that as yet. Another option is the Remote Desktop Accessiblity add-on which "allows using speech and braille with Microsoft Remote Desktop, Citrix Workspace, Parallels RAS and VMware Horizon". this seems to have ben a oneoff, a fluke if you will, but have a look at the #NVDA error I got when trying to do insert q then telling it to restart NVDA.
Error dialog Couldn't terminate existing NVDA process, abandoning start: Exception: [WinError 5] Access is denied.
That's the Hotel California bug. You can exit NVDA, but you can never leave.....
Ok, late response - but did you work out what happened? I'm not sure myself offhand, but if it hasn't happened again, that is good and likely, as you said, a fluke.

One of the most believable parts of the bible is that Jesus' gang had brothers and duplicate names among them, like the neighborhood kids that all grew up together. If every one had a unique name you'd know it was complete fiction, but this detail really has some truth to it.
My proudest parenting moment was when my 11yo daughter asked me to teach her how to write software so she could strip the adverts from the podcasts she downloaded. That's when you know you have a good kid.

You should just use that set for UK English and have a different base the other langs draw from. Apparently IPA symbols do really depend on language more than I thought.

I'm definitely going to improve more of the phonemes to sound like the original, we're not quite there with the British 5/9 now getting impacted by the Americanized version, but we will get there. I do think this last version made things better, not worse there. But yeah, UK and US shouldn't conflict on linguistic rules like that for sure.
By any chance do you still have the earliest version of speech player before the multilang support?

If you still hear pops. Mess with the minFadeOutMs and minFadeInMs settings in __init.py of the NVDA driver and tell me what gives you best results. Not sure what else to tell you.

@jmd2000 yeah, was wondering how divided people would be on LegacyPitch, that's what the formula it used before moving towards ESpeak. If I get like, a majority of people saying the synth is horrible with it I'll ship it with it off. I think it for sure gives it more of an Eloquence feel, Espeak tends to do word inflection downwards more heavily and that's what they borrowed as well in later drivers.

hmm. Would people rather have a small pop at the start of speech, or a broken say-all that doesn't combine lines into each other? Decisions decisions.
The popping would be objectively worse. Say all only represents a subset of screen reader speech, and there are alternative ways to read stuff. A pop at the start of every utterance would be unavoidable.
This is only a logical calculation though; actual human people would rather have neither.

No more V2 file. I removed it, between that new pops bug with speech people are hearing and the older DLL included without the classic pitch setting, nope. This one is just trash.
Sadly, During cancellation, the current approach doesn’t allow for a proper fade-out, as isSpeaking is set to False too quickly, stopping the audio loop from processing the fade-out frame. Hmm. Now that's a challenge to solve. Instead of using silence frames, I could create a separate pending queue for index markers I think.
