Digitalisierung und #Datenschutz: Schluss mit Ausreden!
netzpolitik.org/2023/digitalis…

Schluss mit den faulen Ausreden bei verschleppter Digitalisierung, fordert @ulrichkelber - zu Recht!

#FOSDEM is basically admitting they're a super spreader event.

There are many science-based things conferences can do. The Public Health Pledge (@phpledge) has badging principles with suggestions on how to help prevent people getting sick (at different levels, in various ways): phpledge.com/badging — but FOSDEM isn't doing these things. They could.

(Many of us attending in-person got FOSDEM flu in years past. But now COVID is in the mix)

Hoping that everyone stays well despite this. 🍀

@hub If you browse the #FOSDEM tag here on the Fediverse, you'll see lots of photos of very crowded spaces full of people not wearing masks at all. Once in a while, you might see someone wearing a mask, but it's rare.

Same for all the video streams so far.

I've heard from people who are there that they estimate >= 95% of the crowd aren't wearing masks.

And hallways and rooms are packed full.

😟

Now that #Tusky 21 is released I'll be doing a post a day on each new feature or user-visible bug fix you might see.

I'll be trying to do these in the rough order the change landed.

I'm not covering everything. Notably, I'm skipping over the amazing translation work that's done by volunteers at weblate.tusky.app/. And anything that either fixes a crash, or refactors code.

Very excited to have shared this morning at @fosdem that @osi has joined the Digital Public Goods Alliance ! and is supporting this important initiative's mission of creating a more equitable world through OSIs activities of education, advocacy, and sustained care of the OSD. #oss is treated as digital public goods and is recognized in it's registry. Fantastic way for OSI to kick off its 25 year anniversary! blog.opensource.org/osi-joins-…

I know people want to join pixelfed.social and I'm asked daily about it

Closing registrations was not an easy decision to make, but one that was necessary to reduce centralization.

I built the new pixelfed.org/servers instance picker (and redesigned the entire site) to onboard new users in a more sustainable way, across several curated instances.

I'll re-open registration when the time is right 😉

News is moving quickly tonight: Movetodon has gotten shut down by Twitter due to unspecified 'rule violations'. This makes it matter of utmost urgency to preserve as much of the Twitter bot developer community as possible, as the deadline of February 9th shutdown cannot be presumed to be safe.

If you have worked with the #twitter API in any capacity, please check out this work by @tchambers:

in reply to Connected Places

For all non-developers: access to friend-finding tools cannot be assumed to last until the February 9th deadline. So use them while you still can.

Tools that are currently still available that help you find your Twitter friends:

debirdify.pruvisto.org/
fedifinder.glitch.me/
twitodon.com/

If you're looking for more context what this is all about, you can find that in my weekly newsletter: fediversereport.com/last-week-…

in reply to David G. Simmons

Japanese users reported #TwitterAPI-accessed accounts being frozen a day ago. Twitter disabled Movetodon's access about 8 hours ago.

You don't have until next week.

The casualty is not the FediVerse. The casualty is the people who relied upon free-of-charge #Twitter, directly or indirectly, for everything from authentication to robot-posted pictures of possums. They've lost all of that.

They were always the product, not the customer, of course.

New, by me: A New York-based 'stalkerware' maker has agreed to notify individuals whose phones were compromised by its mobile surveillance software, including PhoneSpector and Highster.

It's a rare, rare win against stalkerware, following a deal with the New York attorney general's office.

I want to pass on something which I learned today. This could be very useful if there are particular Twitter accounts you wish to track, such as news sources, and you're not going to be able to access them as easily in the future.

What you will do is use an RSS Reader to obtain the Twitter feed. There are some good RSS Readers around. We have one in our Leasey product which does work with what I am going to describe here, but there are plenty of others, including Tweesecake I believe although I haven't tried it there.

Use the following syntax, where the term, username, represents the Twitter username, such as brianhartgen

Place this into your RSS Reader to validate the URL.
openrss.org/twitter.com/userna…
such as
openrss.org/twitter.com/brianh…
