Yes, exactly like the research they did in the begining of this year, but with the difference that users can use GTK4 app. As you can read in the article, Allan Day was quite positive about the outcome.

The advantages of this approach is that you can drive user engagement a lot. Imagine the GNOME UX-designer asking us the monitor a certain part of the desktop-environment and we all help them to collect the data!

in reply to Scott Trakker

@Scott_Trakker @fedora Allan was positive, but he noted the issues this approach has—self-selection of the audience, for one; small sample size, for another. The idea that asking people to participate in a collection campaign will drive engagement is also quite far fetched; who is going to know about this campaign? Who is going to participate? What kind of data you can collect if you require an external tool to be installed and executed?
in reply to Emmanuele Bassi

@fedora
Let me put it different: I think it's important that when you start doing telemetry, you have to expose it to the user interface so that people now what's going on in the background. This can be in the system setting or in a separate application. It's important that the user has the feeling that he/she is control. It would be great if the user can decide what to monitor and for how long.
in reply to Scott Trakker

@Scott_Trakker @fedora That is completely orthogonal to what you were asking, and I don't disagree that the user should be in control. It doesn't need to be an application when you get asked first on installation (or upgrade), and you can control it from the Privacy settings of your own system. The telemetry proposal for Fedora had all of those.

@fedora

>he noted the issues this approach has—self-selection of the audience
Did he? I didn't read that.

>The idea that asking people to participate in a collection campaign will drive engagement is also quite far fetched
I don't think this is far fetched at all.

>What kind of data you can collect if you require an external tool to be installed and executed?
I don't see a problem.

in reply to Scott Trakker

@Scott_Trakker @fedora an external tool that you install cannot check things like "how do you start your apps", or "how many settings pages you use", or "how many times you click on a banner in Software". That kind of information is not available to an external tool: you need information provided by the system and apps themselves. In other words: you need a metrics system.

Please help my girlfriend if you can. She works harder than anyone I know and is stuck in a financial rut because of circumstances outside of her control. Hundreds of jobs that don't consider. Others that fall through. Crappy family and no real support system. Right now she just needs to be able to eat and take care of herself and her little sister until something finally goes right for them. #crowdfund #crowdfundSupport #MutualAid #DisabilityCrowdfund gofund.me/6a57a6d2

On June 10, we were supposed to get a round of severe weather here in Texas, so I turned on the recording software to record the Weather Radio stream. During the morning, however, around 8 AM, the station went down. This is the first outage we've had since the station switched to a wireless transmitter setup this March. Apparently, this is what the new Wireless transmitters do when they're just powering up. I've been listening to weather radio since 2010 and have never heard anything like this.

This is a warning about Meta and Threads.

Please boost this here and outside of Mastodon so that pregnant people in the United States are informed that using Meta/Threads is dangerous.

I'm unlikely to get pregnant but I have ZERO presence on Meta/Facebook/Instagram/Threads as a matter of principle.

Cactus Comments has now seen over 1.2 million unique users - only counting guest users on our free public instance.

Guest users on instances not hosted by us and signed in users on any server don't even count in this statistic.

cactus.chat has to be the Matrix server with most guest users at this point...

I keep spotting cactus in the wild as well. Last week I saw someone using it for the comment section of a livestream! So cool.

Google has found another way to monetize your data: The tech giants that earned ~225 billion U.S. dollars in 2022 with posting targeted ads, has updated its privacy policy. Google now says that it will scrape all information on the internet to train its AI systems Google Translate, Bard and Cloud AI. Whether Google is also using private Gmail data for training its AI, remains unknown.

I always routinely log into my tutanota email every 2 or 3 months, but why was my account deleted on charges of not logging in for 6 months.

Please fix the fatal bug in the system ( Last Login Log ) in Tutanota, so that other ( Free Accounts ) don't have the same fate as mine.

Sorry @Tutanota because of this fatal incident I will move to @ProtonMail@m.gretaoto.ca @protonmail

There's an alternative version of Mastodon called "Mastodon Glitch Edition" (aka "glitch-soc" or just "Glitch"). Glitch is totally compatible with normal Mastodon, but adds experimental new features.

For example, Glitch instances let the admin alter the character limit, allow local posting, text formatting and lots of other stuff.

Many features in Glitch have eventually made their way into normal Mastodon after proving themselves stable and useful.

You can find out more at:

glitch-soc.github.io/docs/

If you run your own Mastodon instance you can switch to Glitch, and switch back again if you don't like it.

(You may be wondering how this post is so long? It's because FediTips is on an instance that uses Glitch, and the instance character limit has been extended to 1000.)

Pokud se vám na Mastodonu a na witter.cz líbí, podpořte prosím jeho provoz a náš kolektiv.

darujme.cz/projekt/1207215

Witter.cz a naše další služby (nolog.cz/services) provozujeme na vlastních serverech v datacentru v Praze. Elektřina a prostor nás tam měsíčně stojí několik tisíc korun. Protože nebereme peníze od státu a naše služby nejsou zpoplatněné ani procpané reklamami, pořebujeme s náklady pomoci.
Díky tomu dokážeme provoz dlouhodobě udržet a rozšiřovat.

I spent a very satisfying evening hacking with libcurl’s new websocket implementation. The docs are stellar curl.se/docs/websocket.html and the webinar last week painted in the conceptual gaps nicely - please make it public.

Thanks @bagder @icing and all the other curl contributors who made this happen!

In the end I was only a select() away from talking to my #elixir Bandit powered websocket server! Again amazing docs and a very polished piece of code too. Thanks @mtrudel!
