Anyone using NVDA, have you found with 2024.4 beta 4, that reviewing Windows Terminal is very sluggish?
Regular reminder that if you are not targeted by a particular form of oppression, you do not get to decide what "counts" as problematic in that area.
Some examples that are routinely getting mishandled around these parts:
If you are not Black, you do not get to decide what is (or is not) anti-Black.
If you are white, you do not get to decide what is (or is not) racist.
If you are cis, you do not get to decide what is (or is not) transmisia.
If you are not Jewish, you do not get to decide what is (or is not) anti-Semitic.
If you are male, you do not get to decide what is (or is not) sexist.
If you do not have a particular disability, you do not get to decide what is (or is not) ableist with regards to that disability, and no, experiencing one particular disability does not qualify you to talk about all others.
Not deferring to the targets of these forms of oppression is, by definition, continuing and upholding that oppression.
Also, since apparently it still needs to be said over and over, weaponizing the oppression you do experience to try to invalidate others is no good either.

“New Zealand’s Long-term Insights Briefings may not make the headlines, but they should. They’re a little unusual, internationally. Every three years, public service departments are mandated to think long-term—about the trends, risks, and opportunities that could shape our lives over the next 10, 20, even 50 years.”

recent discussion about some older C libraries has me realizing that some of those are going to be Roman road-style infrastructure, probably used for literal centuries and setting design choices that may well be used for millennia if our civilization lasts that long.
This is of course horrifying.

"Honey, don’t forget to pick up some bread on your way home from work. Oh, and your girlfriend Vallery says hi!"
Husband texts back:
"Who’s Vallery?"
Wife replies:
"Nobody, I just wanted to make sure you’d read my message."
Husband responds:
"Well, I’m actually with Vallery right now, so I thought you saw us."
Wife, shocked:
"WHAT? Where are you?!"
Husband:
"Right outside the bakery, by the door."
Wife, rushing:
"Stay there! I’m coming right now!"
*Five minutes later, she texts him again:*
"I’m here at the bakery. Where are you?"
Husband:
"I’m still at work. Now that you're there, why don’t you grab the bread and bring it home? 😆🏃♀️🏃♂️🤣"

This morning I got a response Letter (by email) from the Speakers Office of the House of Commons of Canada in response to the Open Letter* so many of you all signed back in June!
Here is Speaker Fergus’ letter in full. Reply with what you think we should do next to encourage MPs and Parliamentarians to ask for this!
___________________
Dear Mr. Alemany:
Thank you for your letter and proposal concerning Open Social Web.
Many Members, their staff, members of the Press Gallery and Canadians use social networks as a primary tool for consuming news, sharing stories of interest or to comment on news or information. The House of Commons established a presence on social networks in 2017, with a consistent branding, to share information and, critically, to provide Members increased and mobile access to relevant parliamentary information so that they may share this information with their social media followers.
Although the creation of an Open Social Web would present a promising opportunity with several advantages for the House of Commons, as enumerated in your letter, it also brings numerous challenges and risks to the organization (e. g. extensive engagement from many stakeholders, adoption of specialized and secure infrastructure and the need for content moderation and curation).
To date, we have had no requests for this type of service from Members. This would be a substantial undertaking that would require direction and approval from the Board of Internal Economy (BOIE) before being considered for prioritization and implementation. Even if mandated to offer such a service, we would be unable to ensure its adoption and widespread use among parliamentarians.
Thank you for your interest, and please be assured of our continuous support for more open, secure, engaging and informative multi-channel experiences for our users.
Sincerely,
Hon. Greg-Fergus, P.C., M.P

Hello everyone @Friendica Support !
I filed this issue on github and it has been pretty ignored. Of course I don't expect it to be taken into consideration, but I would like to know if I'm the only one who perceives this feature as a problem. I would also be curious to know if in your opinion the issue is easily solvable, or if it requires an unjustifiable effort?
For those who do not have a GitHub account, I report the text of the Issue here:
Good evening everyone.Introduction
Like most software in the Fediverse, Friendica accounts can also be "followed" through their RSS feed.
In this way, it is possible to use the string https://INSTANCENAME/feed/USERNAME/
For example, the account of the Friendica group "School" is
poliverso.org/feed/scuola/Is the feature request related to a problem? Please describe.
Unfortunately, however, the feed of the Fediverse accounts publishes only the contents of that account and not, for example, those reshared.
This choice, although understandable for normal accounts, is much less understandable for Groups (the former Forums), since these groups do not publish (if not rarely) their own contents.
Describe the feature you'd like
The developers Lemmy have brilliantly solved the problem with their "Communities" (the Lemmy version of Activitypub groups) and today it is possible to follow the feed of the Lemmy communities through the string
https://ISTANZA/feeds/c/NOMEUTENTE.xml?sort=NewAnd in fact the feed of the "Fediverso" community is perfectly queryable by a feed reader
feddit.it/feeds/c/fediverso.xm…Even Lemmy displays a feed that presents all the posts published in the local communities (https://ISTANZA/feeds/local.xml?sort=New) and even all those of the federated "timeline" (ISTANZA/feeds/all.xml?sort=New).
I therefore wonder if it is not possible to make it so that at least the "Group" type accounts can display a feed that also includes shared content.
Describe alternatives you've considered
I can't think of any valid alternatives.
I tried in vain to follow a Friendica Group with a Lemmy account (basically I signed up to the "group" which obviously in Lemmy is seen as a "Community"): basically I wanted to use Lemmy to make him export the RSS feed...
Unfortunately, however, there are still problems that do not allow the contents of Friendica to be correctly synchronized in the community view of Lemmy.
"JAWS for Windows 3.11 is an older version of the JAWS screen reader. Specifically, JAWS for Windows 3.11 was released in the early 1990s. You would need to look for JAWS versions from that era, such as JAWS 2.0 or earlier, which were compatible with Windows 3.11.
If you have any more specific questions or need further assistance, feel free to ask!"
@jaybird110127 JAWS XP was released in 2001. It introduced several improvements over prior versions, including better support for Windows XP, enhanced performance, and new features that improved accessibility and usability for visually impaired users.
Key improvements included:
Enhanced Compatibility: Improved support for Windows XP, ensuring smoother operation and better integration with the operating system.
Performance Enhancements: Faster response times and more efficient processing, making the screen reader more responsive.
New Features: Introduction of new functionalities and commands that made navigation and interaction with applications more intuitive and user-friendly.
These enhancements made JAWS XP a significant upgrade, providing a more seamless and efficient experience for users.
Tor insists its #network is safe after German cops convict CSAM dark-web admin
Kind of boils down to opsec fail here. Using outdated software, which in this case didn’t properly secure Tor connections.
Timing attacks are still viable (especially with hostile nodes), but this reads as an #opsec fail to me.
Remember: a major part of anonymity is maintaining great opsec.
Obligatory: Tor is not “just for criminals,” despite one getting caught in this case (glad he did tbh). Regular people use Tor everyday.

Outdated software blamed for cracks in the armorIain Thomson (The Register)
I did this to test whether the field has a text length limit. It was shocking to me that those smart developers at FS did not code in a maxlength to the input, it's like, the least you could do to prevent large use of the API.
Answer, only one. It just told me that R and Shift+R can be used to navigate to the next/previous slider on the Web.
On the more amusing side, it was also perfectly happy to tell me that NVDA+N can be used to access the NVDA menu, and that I should quit JAWS and switch to NVDA first. A real shame we can't share the conversation...
I set up this server for myself and my friends, but i swear to god i'm literally the only one who posts here.
One person occasionally boosts. Another raaaarely replies, but I feel kinda like a spammer every time i look at the "Local" feed and it's just "me me me". :/

in reply to Devin Prater :blind: • • •I haven't seen any reports of this yet. A couple of things to try:
1) Fully restart the PC after updating.
2) Press NVDA+q, then down arrow to "Restart with add-ons disabled" and enter. If resolved, work through add-ons one by one to find the culprit.
Following those, it would be great to get more info. Set log level to "Debug" (on general settings") restart with add-ons disabled, replicate problem, then please write up an issue on github.com/nvaccess/nvda/issue…
