Anyone using NVDA, have you found with 2024.4 beta 4, that reviewing Windows Terminal is very sluggish?

NV Access are very pleased that RACQ Magazine interviewed us for an article on NVDA, "Revolutionising accessibility through a global community". RACQ noted: "A Brisbane-based not-for-profit organisation is behind a global movement breaking down barriers for blind people."

Hmm. When did Windows 11 file explorer get tabs?
I only ever open Edge accidentally but the 'And 1 more tab' rubbish in the title bar gets on my nerves enough there.
Time for an #NVDASR application dictionary entry, I think.
I do a lot of my work in a shell but it'll still annoy the hell out of me.

It's really interesting that most of the innovation in #NVDA addons is coming from the #Spanish community: the best translate addon, the most reliable addon directory, the maintained fork of NVDA Remote, Input Lock, the Mozilla addon...well over three quarters of the addons I have installed are developed by Spanish speakers. It really is a massive change from the days when basically all AT development happened exclusively in English. #nvdasr

For those on the beta channel, NVDA 2024.4 Beta 3 is available for testing. LibLouis has been updated fixing issues in Spanish and adding new Thai and Greek tables. There are also updates to NVDA translations. Read the full info and download at: nvaccess.org/post/nvda-2024-4b… (Note that Beta 2 released last week included the add-on update check fix included in 2024.3.1 today).

NV Access is pleased to announce that version 2024.3.1 of NVDA, the free screen reader for Microsoft Windows, is now available for download. We encourage all users to upgrade to this version.

This is a patch release to fix a bug with the automatic add-on update notification. When automatically checking for add-on updates, NVDA no longer freezes on poor connections.

Hmm, are you using the 64bit version? Discord for a long time only had a 32bit installer, it was very weird. But with the new thing, its actually pretty well for me. I never had issues using it with #NVDASR
I get that its anoying on phones, I agree, but on the PC, I'm actually pretty satesfied.

Anyone know why #NVDASR constantly gets stuck in Speech mode on-demand mode and hitting insert-S refuses to toggle it. Speech is still fully enabled and I have to restart NVDA for any change to happen.

Ah sad, even if I wanted to use the Windows NT Program manager inside my Windows 11 installation, #NVDASR no longer reads out the program items you arrow to. Funny too think that it wasn't accessible out of the box, but also not surprised since this was common for those days. Here's a good forum topic for files: wincert.net/forum/topic/13964-…

Well, the Hacker News website now has an annoying change when used with the #NVDASR screen reader. It reads the following for the upvote link: "vote id=41382699&how=up&auth=7…"

You folks are doing amazing work. NVDA just keeps getting better and better. Thank you for making it freely available to anyone who needs a good and robust Windows screen reader. #NVDA #NVDASR

@NVAccess @jcsteh I've used #NVDASR entirely since I got here myself.

@jcsteh There weren't too many stock related things on here when we joined, so I've been trying to get the jump on them - no one actually calls NVIDIA #NVDA - it makes sense for them to use #NVIDIA if that's what they want to talk about. Most people are good with it, but I generally tag our posts with both #NVDA and #NVDAsr just in case

Can you help me? I'm having problems with the #NVDASR update. It goes completely mute when finished, no matter what voice is in use. Restarted and it doesn't work. I went back to the previous version and tried again and the problem happened again. It even happened with a portable version. I wouldn't want to start a version from scratch because I have everything perfectly configured in 2024.2.

Hot on the heels of today's release, our In-Process blog is out with all the info you need! Highlights of NVDA 2024.3, a note for RC users, thanks to SignPath, how to make the most of the new mouse wheel scroll commands, and a head's up about A11y Camp.

It's true that the #NVDASR Eloquence/Vocalizer addon from Code Factory was discontinued. However, you can still purchase the SAPI5-compliant version of Eloquence.
From Code Factory
codefactoryglobal.com/usecases…
or From A. T. Guys
atguys.com/products/eloquence-…
I use it with #NVDA.

Quick Tip: If you do plan on using NVDA with Eloquence, make sure that you go into the Voices menu (shortcut key is insert+ctrl+V) and uncheck "Use Spelling Functionality if Supported.) This prevents Eloquence from spelling out text in some dialog boxes. #NVDAsr

The Release Candidate (RC) of NVDA 2024.3 is now available for download & testing.

We encourage all users to download this RC & provide feedback.

Unless any critical bugs are found, this will be identical to the final 2024.3 release.

Read more & Download: nvaccess.org/post/nvda-2024-3r…

Highlights include:
- Notification of add-on updates
- Updates to Unicode, LibLouis & eSpeak

Being #OpenSource has many advantages. For #NVDA has opened the way for community contributions, and has enabled #transparency, #security and #innovation beyond what might have been possible in closed software. Increasingly, governments are also mandating the use of open source. Here is an article on such a step forward in Switzerland:

"Switzerland Makes Open Source Software Mandatory For Public Sector"

Derek attributes his experience with NVDA instrumental to his career success and since working at Google has found numerous ways to improve accessibility, both internally and externally.

"A product built by the community, for the community, is better than one built by some company, simply because the community is in charge of what goes into it." - Derek Riemer

GitHub has released an insightful article to accompany the documentary shared earlier showcasing NVDA, OSARA, & REAPER. The article interviews NVDA co-founders, Mick Curran & Jamie Teh, as well as Derek Riemer, who has used NVDA since 2011. Derek has contributed to NVDA itself & written over 20 add-ons. He also now works as a software engineer at Google.

Do I know any #NVDASR people who have used Betterbird? Been trying it out portable here, seems more responsive with a bloated profile that Thunderbird has been choking on. However, I was hoping I'd be able to persuade the Thunderbird+G5 add-on to work with it. I've set Betterbird as a trigger for the profile the G5 add-on makes, no dice. Have I missed something obvious, any other suggestions of things to try?
