Two things that they don’t tell you about the Trolley Problem

1: it’s a shopping trolley
2: you’re playing it every time that you purchase something

My whole life, I've lived in New England: the land of blizzards and ice storms. When there's a storm on the forecast, we prepare. Stock up on bottled water and nonperishables, refill prescriptions that are running low, charge the flashlights and electronic devices, have a stack of blankets on hand, make sure there's fuel in the car and (if you're lucky) generator, restack the indoor wood pile. 1/3

#XMPP has continued to evolve and improve over the many years I've been using it. But despite the development effort going into it, there aren't as many people joining it as there should.

We can thank hype and neomania for that. These factors ensure that proprietary/centralized networks (the latter includes #Matrix) receive more funding and more code contributors. More funding results in better marketing and stronger network effect.

Dear #Jabber, #XMPP, #Snikket, #Prav (insert your favourite branding) users,

I have this #MOTO (#MUC of the day) for you:

xmpp:trains@conference.jabjab.…

The room subject says, it's for trainees, trainspotters, trainsexuals, traingenders, and trainists, but I'ld say, it for everyone who likes or has to travel by #train or is interested in #railway.

Btw. I'll go by #nighttrain #EuropeanSleeper to #miniDebConf #Toulouse, soon.

Finally some good news:

The fate of #FarRight website #Infowars will be controlled by #theOnion after the satirical news site emerged as the winning bidder of Wednesday’s private auction of the #media company founded by #conspiracy theorist #AlexJones.

a long time ago, you could tell the difference between satire and conspiracy theory

satire was zany and conspiracy theory was quaint and harmless: "UFOs? ok, mmm"

then you couldn't tell the difference, they were equally absurd. "they're making the frogs gay!" "da fuq?"

then you could, conspiracy theory was vicious disinfo agendas (sandy hook lies)

then you couldn't, conspiracy theory *literally purchased by satire*

this is one weird story arc

Cop29 / IAEA And EBRD Nuclear MOU Aims To ‘Unlock Investments In Low-Carbon Future’

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) have signed an agreement to expand their cooperation in nuclear energy as part of efforts to unlock investments in a low-carbon future.

The IAEA said in a statement that the agreement, signed on the sidelines of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (Cop29) in Baku, Azerbaijan, will expand existing partnership between the two organisations “beyond nuclear and radiation safety concerns”.

The move marks a shift in focus from traditional safety concerns towards capacity-building initiatives and developing energy policy, governance and financing frameworks, and mechanisms to reach net zero goals, the statement said.

“Together we are not only building on years of successful cooperation in nuclear safety, but we are opening new doors for capacity building, clean energy, and economic resilience,” said IAEA director-general Rafael Grossi.

“Partnering with financial institutions, like the EBRD, is essential to unlocking the investments needed for a low-carbon future,” he said.

Grossi highlighted the importance of partnerships with financial institutions and the private sector to scale up nuclear energy.

The IAEA said it invites government, industry, banks and other stakeholders to partner with the agency and to contribute their financial resources, expertise, industrial knowledge and advocacy.

The agency said countries can benefit from the IAEA-EBRD partnership’s activities in support nuclear and radiation safety and technical infrastructure, including the decommissioning of facilities and the management of radioactive waste.

The IAEA and EBRD have a longstanding commitment to nuclear decommissioning efforts across Eastern Europe, Russia, and Central Asia, including ongoing projects in Ukraine, Bulgaria, Lithuania, and Slovakia, and environmental remediation in Central Asia.

Thursday Thought:
I think it's pretty incredible that we as a society are OK with a site like PayPal not announcing any status updates upon pressing "complete payment". Instead the "your payment completed" message appears at the bottom of the screen but certain groups get excluded from knowing this. Until we as a society can overlook these problems with major inconveniences but minor fixes, the accessibility industry will be alive and well. At this point, I don't think it'll change even with AI

I switched from K9 to Thunderbird last week, and have no issues to report, although Thunderbird did not, as I anticipated, spot my K9 installation and offer to carry the accounts across.

My only issue is that nothing I do will get Thunderbird to appear in my AOI Launcher shortcuts. I'm sure I'll figure that out in time.

@Friendica Support @Libranet Support
Can I follow friends on #BlueSky from #Friendica (and specifically from Libranet)? I haven't managed so far. I tried searching for their profile URL with /rss at the end, but nothing is found. I've seen some conversations about this, but couldn't find a way to make it work.

Thanks!

Sorry, this isn't helping me. I can't follow @bsky.brid.gy because I can't find it. I search for it and nothing is found. I'm not on bluesky, I have friends who are.

I've managed to find one friend by adding /rss to her profile. I can see her posts, but I can't like or comment. I can only see the photos and comments if I go to the link.

@Noam writes
If you do not want to use the privacy-friendly solution in Friendica, you can use @bsky.brid.gy@bsky.brid.gy.

However, this solution requires that both (the Bluesky account you want to follow and yourself) must follow the intermediary.

@Matthias I'm missing something. What is the 'privacy friendly solution'?

What you posted above requires a bluesky account, if I understand correctly.

in reply to Noam writes

@Noam writes
That is correct. You do have an account with Bluesky. However, Bluesky only sees the Friendica instance and your public posts as soon as you use the Friendica Connector.

Bluesky does not see your IP address, whether you have logged in with a mobile phone or a browser, which operating system you are using and other things that are of interest to companies. Friendica therefore protects you if someone on the other side is interested in your metadata.

With the bridge, you always have another partner on board that you have to trust. This is not the case with the solution via your instance.

8 Best Free and Open Source Network Intrusion Detection Systems lxer.com/module/newswire/ext_l…

A woman takes her lover home during the day while her husband is at work.

Her 9 year old son comes home unexpectedly, sees them, and hides in
the bedroom cupboard to watch.

Just after getting into bed the woman's husband also comes home
unexpectedly, she tells her lover to hide in the cupboard, not
realising that the little boy is in there.

After a little while the little boy says, "Dark in here.

The man, who obviously got a real fright not expecting to hear
anything, let alone from a little boy says, "Yes, it is."

Boy - "I have a football."

Man - "That's nice."

Boy - "Want to buy it?"

Man - "No, thanks."

Boy - "My dad's outside."

Man - "OK, how much?"

Boy - "£100"

In the next few weeks, it happens again that the boy and the lover are
in the cupboard together.

Boy - "Dark in here."

Man - "Yes, it is."

Boy - "I have football boots."

The lover, remembering the last time, asks the boy, "OK How much this time?"

Boy - "£500"

Man - "Sold."

A few days later, the boys' father says to the boy, "Grab your boots
and football, let's go outside and have a game of soccer.

The boy says, "I can't, I sold my ball and boots."

The father asks, "How much did you sell them for and to who?"

The boy says, "To a friend of mine for a £600."

The father says, "That's a terrible thing to do, overcharging your
friend like that". "That's four times what they cost when they were
new, I'm going to take you to church and make you confess your
terrible sin."

They go to the church and the father makes the little boy sit in the
confession booth and he closes the door.

The boy says, "Dark in here".

The priest says, "Don't start that crap again you little toad, you're
in my cupboard now
