The Gatineau Police Service is asking residents to report neighbours who have had non-Quebec licence plates on their vehicles for more than three months.
By law in every state and province, you have a certain amount of time if you change residence to update your change of address. This is very important and contributes the tax revenue of the municipality, county, province/state etc.
Go to your city council meeting and say "I want to pay more property taxes because I don't want you to enforce the laws on the books" and see how well that is received.

On the subject of "privacy preserving" analytics/advertisement.
Deidentification and Aggregation are necessary, but not sufficient, steps towards Anonymization.
You also have to Isolate a derived dataset from any past or future context.
Firefox, or at least the ideal of Firefox - an open browser that serves the interests of people rather than corporations is so important.
It's also an incredibly expensive proposition (in part because of how the web has evolved complexity, thanks in part to how corporations have driven, and ultimately practically captured various standards)
I deeply understand Mozilla's desire to continue existing to serve that mission...but it can't be like this.
Many people are in my mentions talking about and/or promoting various firefox forks.
Look, if Mozilla can't afford to keep developing/maintaining firefox without resorting to the sad path, then the question that needs to be asked is how any other organization can? What about the approach is different?
It's one thing to package firefox with some of the bad things turned off. It's another to take on the responsibility of maintaining that codebase sans-mozilla.
There is clearly a lot of effort fractured over a lot of projects, perhaps enough to actually take on the task, but I'm not aware of any project committed to a hard fork of firefox, with everything that entails (and if you had the resources to go that route, I'm not convinced that is the best path to take either)
I can only really think of a handful of groups I think have a chance at success, but I don't think any of them are currently considering it.
I think Tor Project are probably best placed to do it - they are already as close to maintaining a hard fork of firefox you can be without actually maintaining a hard fork. I understand why they don't - but, if anyone has a shot of making that path work, I think it's them.
Really, what I would love to see is a project with a vision and principles.
Where is the browser with activity pub integration? Where is the browser with rss feeds? Where is the browser that doesn't have to disable the tracking crap, because it simply doesn't exist in the first place?
If we want a web that works for the people, we need to build a browser that takes responsibility for those values.
While understanding that that is a damn expensive thing to ask.

@hub Yeah, if they do a no-confidence motion thing before the set October dates, then we're probably getting a shakeup in Q2-Q3.
As for whether the rail project will be stuck in devhell etc., I, too, will be waiting to see the first shovelling to truly believe my eyes. But it's nice to have an exciting project to look forward to in these gloomy times

@pidgin Yeah we've integrated with gtkspell and the like in the past, the bigger issue for us is configuration.
ie users aren't going to want their messages going to AI at all in some cases, so we'll need a way to turn that off. We'll also probably want a way to tap into aspell or something, so we'll need an abstraction of course.

@pidgin I forgot libspelling requires gtksourceview. I'm not necessarily against that, but that's then another dependency we need to carry for mac and windows.
This could maybe make code blocks easier so it's worth looking into assuming we can get a pango formatted syntax out of it, but I don't think we can or I didn't find it last time I was looking.
We'd need a pango format because our messages are just labels now but we do need to support inline images, so this might work there too.
@swick @pidgin Blocking what specifically? We're an extremely small development team trying to get a major rewrite out that can support modern chat features because the Pidgin 2 and earlier API was written to support chat networks of the 90's...
the download size being 400 mb is a bit disappointing, and since I guess it’s used for the local language tool server, perhaps it could instead be moved into a flatpak extension, so that it could be installed by users that need it.

And making LanguageTool a runtime download is probably not desirable since I really hate apps that download other content on the first use, especially when it happens when i’m then offline
@vixalientoots I do believe something as good as LanguageTool could be made while also being lightweight, but that's not what they optimize for given their main model is cloud.

Also, about the accessibility side of it, the application has a very simple interface, which is very good, less things to go wrong! however, as it is now, I have no idea, as a screenreader user, what is wrong in a given piece of text, and how to fix it, looking at the interface itself. So then, here are some suggestions, if you'd like to implement them, I can also make an issue in the project's forge if you think that's better
firefox uses text attributes to mark something as a spelling error, perhaps do the same
add a tooltip which modifies itself, or use the actions API of gtk, to tell the screenreader additional information provided by language tool, why a bit of text is wrong
if language tool allows it, add a keyboard shortcut or a context menu item to correct the word, otherwise the current suggestions are more than enough if implemented
Any idea of why it doesn't work with Thunderbird? The extension also exists for Thunderbird¹, but when I select "Local Server" it finds nothing, and when I manually enter the address as for LibreOffice² I have no more success.

So now that bit.ly is showing ads, if you need a URL shortener, #lynx is decent and #accessible and easy to host. And before you tell me that we don't need URL shorteners anymore and how they're a security risk, I need them for: 1. Business cards, slides, signs, and other physical objects that need a URL. While most phones can scan QR Codes, you can't read them out loud for #blind folks. If you're doing a presentation, "scan the QR code on screen" isn't good enough. You need to have a URL that you can speak and another human can remember. Yes, NFC is a thing, but it doesn't solve that problem. 2. Places that still don't allow URLs (LinkedIn) or where long URLs are awkward to work with (text-only emails, the terminal, etc.) 3. Times (like a phone call) where I need to tell someone a URL using the noises that come from my face-parts
@FreakyFwoof My domain isn't bad. The issue is that sometimes I have to share a link to something else where I don't control the URL and it's stupidly long. So now I have go.interfree.ca. But something like go.interfree.ca/keyboard is waaaaay easier than the actual URL of the slide alt-text, even though it's not all that short.
Unfortunately Lynx doesn't seem to get any further updates anymore for now. I guess it works and will continue to work for quite a while too, if I wanted to start a new URL shortener now I'd most likely pick something that is under active development though. Its really good to know that it is accessible though, thanks.
@ToniBarth The issue is that I couldn't find anything that's under active development and met my requirements. Those being: dockerized, quick and simple, ability for only logged-in users to create urls, ability for admin to manage created urls, ability to set custom urls rather than using random ones, no disgusting click tracking.
I was actually looking for one a few months back and I'll most likely look again as soon as I get the chance to buy a shortened domain with a discount again, so i'll keep Lynx in the back of my head and will report back if I find something that might be more future-proof.
This is a repository of apps to be used with your F-Droid client. Applications in this repository are official binaries built by the original application developers, taken from their resp. repositories (mostly Github, GitLab, Codeberg).
Maybe it is implemented and I have not been able to find it ... but ... it is possible to add a label that identifies an application that is reproducible. It could be interesting for two reasons. 1- People when choosing an application (if they wish) can choose such applications easily over others that are not. 2- Developers could feel motivated to make their reproducible applications to have that label
