A colleague pointed out today that we’ve spent decades convincing developers not to mix data and instruction streams because of the huge security concerns.
Then LLMs come along and basically wrap an eval() around anything anyone types.
The whole EU age verification app thing is so exhausting. Yes, the tech specs are public, yes, the wallet app is opensource, yes, it could be done in a worse way.
Yet, it is still the newest attempt to answer the question: "can we tech hard enough to avoid having parents talking to their kids?"
PSA: if you have a small home NAS (e.g. Synology), and use #syncthing , DO NOT update to v2. It’s crazy slow, I’m waiting since 5 days to scan and have sync working on my modest ~500 GB archive… probably going to downgrade back to v1.3 this weekend 😑
that's crazy because the architectural changes in v2 should have made it significantly faster... like the rolling hash removal was a huge waste of CPU and I always saw it hanging on really large files because of that. And the default of using 3 network connections instead of 1... 🤯
@feld totally agree, which is why I upgraded. It seems the new SQLite backend is the cause of this, when it is stored on HDDs and your NAS doesn’t have much RAM… annoying.
That’s probably caused by syncthing running SQLite in WAL mode. With WAL, SQLite synchronizes by sharing memory between processes (if needed) instead of using POSIX advisory locks (flocks) [which SQLite can also use].
@feld I’ll test that too, today I went through the config file to tune it for low memory systems and it feels slightly faster. Waiting to finish scanning before doing anything.

(Actually that wasn't on Linux it was on SCO Open Desktop, and I think the flag might have been -r on that, but it's the same principle. Luckily they'd only have the machine for a couple of hours so a complete wipe and reinstall fixed it.)

@libreoffice I appreciate what you do and have been using LibreOffice since the beginning and I love it. However, in recent versions I have been getting a random error behavior - when you have a document open in LibO and you want to use Save As or export to pdf the file dialog opens in a directory where previous document was saved. I tried 25.8.0.3 and it behaves that way randomly. Sometimes it offer the right directory, sometimes previous. I went back to 25.2.3.2

At #IzzyOnDroid, we saw this spike 2 days earlier, at the 23rd, with number of downloads (stats.izzyondroid.org/) suddenly spiking from 30k to 50k daily (but there were such spikes before). Coincidence? But yeah, number of daily visitors started climbing after 24th with 250k to 270k on the 27th…
PC question for the blind. How do you guys update your BIOS, since we obviously can't access it with a screenreader or similar software? I was recommended to update it in order to fix an issue. I got told it was quite out of date, which can surely be the case. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.
In the case of my laptop, which is from Dell, Dell itself deploys updates through Windows Update, and there's also instructions at Dell's website on how to manually update it using an USB stick. When the manufacturer doesn't deploy automatic updates, I believe there are somewhere instructions to do that, perhaps at the motherboard's website, and you can probably do it from your system, whether Windows or Linux.

We need to fight Google's new ID requirement for app developers. It isn't like showing ID at the airport. More like showing it at the printing press and only IDed authors are allowed to print books.
What Google doesn't talk about is that they build this ID system to ban developers and their apps.
Unfortunately, developers on Google Play are already used to this system and people have accepted Apple, so I this will be a hard fight. Digital ecosystems being closed "to keep us safe" isn't seen as a bad thing.
People saying "But I use a degoogled custom ROM, so I won't be affected" are missing the point. Apps not on Google Play are already a niche. Banning them on most people's devices is a big issue, even if some people can still escape.
Also the general trend of Google becoming more closed may make even custom ROMs impossible eventually.
In the past, when books were censored and forbidden, people could still print them in their basements and spread them. Everybody who got their hands on one, could read it. This won't be possible anymore in our new digital age.

Reaper is such amazing software. I just discovered the 2 actions SWS: Save current track selection and SWS: Toggle between current and saved track selection. While there is sadly no OSARA reporting from these actions at this time, I can now have a 70 track project, go to track 60 and bookmark that, go up to track 15, and continue tapping one keystroke over and over to jump instantly between tracks 15 and 60. While admittedly only useful in projects with a lot of tracks, it can be a huge time saver sometimes when 2 related bits of the project you're working on are 49 tracks apart in the view.
@pitermach @Scott I was considering doing it myself honestly, I looked at OSARA's code and it looks like it'd be a one-liner, just need to add it to the custom post commands map and have it call PostGoToTrack or whatever. As usual I'll go figure out how to fix it in OSARA's code even if it takes a while but then for some reason the simple figure out project guidelines/fork/do we need an issue/pr formality process is a blocker for me and that is absolutely something I need to work on, not just for OSARA but for any project.
