Random tip for comparing the performance of Rust and C programs that use stdout:
Rust stdout is line-buffered, even when redirecting to a file.
Glibc (and most C libraries I know of) are smarter than this, and will switch to a more aggressive buffering scheme if they aren't writing to a terminal.
Running the program _under hyperfine_ is enough to trigger this behavior, because hyperfine takes over the stdout stream. Glibc senses that this is not a terminal and turns on a 4096-byte buffer; Rust continues making one syscall per line.
So if a Rust program that prints stuff seems to lose a performance advantage over a C counterpart when run under hyperfine, it's worth stracing to check.
(There's continuing talk of fixing this default in Rust, but it's not fixed yet.)

Rust's NamedTempFile made me realize that temporary files that delete themselves when the object goes out of scope... are quite nice, actually. You have to structure your code so that they get passed around properly, but that makes the lifetime of the tempfile very clear. It's not garbage to be cleaned up afterwards (if you remember); it's just a temporary resource like any other.

@Jay42 don't think so. they code in Rust and use some GUI framework (I don't know which one, asked in the comments). I guess, the person that would be the most helpful is Matt @matt. But again, splendors and miseries of OpenSource: how can I urge Matt or even ask him to do something free of charge? I mean, who am I to do that? He already does lots and lots of things for the community, and it's up to the Zed team to care about accessibility. But they mildly told me to F off, basically.
@Jay42 The Zed team wrote their own Rust GUI framework, GPUI. So I don't know of anyone else who would have much motivation to make it accessible. And I can't go around implementing accessibility in every GUI toolkit out there, even with AccessKit. Working on AccessKit itself is enough.
So one thing I notice about #blind Internet culture: even back on Twitter, and now here in the #fediverse, blind people tend towards having discussions in giant threads, sometimes with as many as 10-12 people in them, that can often stretch on for days. I rarely (if ever) see sighted culture do this. I wonder why? It's not a criticism, it's just interesting to me. Maybe because Discord and other chat apps were historically less #accessible, so blind culture tends to use the fediverse more as a discussion platform? Or maybe it's something UI related that makes it easier for blind folks to track giant threads of doom? The few times I've been involved in this style of discussion with sighted folks, they've become confused and begged for everyone to move to Discord or Slack or somewhere. On the other hand, I rarely see blind people do a single, lengthy post broken up and threaded the way sighted people do, with (1/N) at the end. We tend to just move to instances with longer character limits, or put our long form thoughts on a webpage or something.
Edit to add: I'm pleased to say that this post has now become a perfect example of the thing I was talking about; my last post in the thread included the phrase "transsexual furry puppygirls". It makes me happy that people unfamiliar with what I'm talking about need do nothing more than look at the thread on this post.

It's my daughter, the code to exit changes each, time, and we know she can get out of it, but the store remains disabled, so the best guess is Kids Space itself is able to install things, or the Lenovo software that you can opt to to get suggested apps is running and we cannot locate it. We just block them when she does it as Family Link still informs us she did it.
Nope, also blocked, when we set it up we blocked almost everything besides the kids space, YouTube kids, and stuff like clock, calculator, etc, play store she was originally accessing via a banner ad on an app that should not have had them, and disabling it stopped that. I mean she's also learned how to cast to our TV, send things to the printer, and is playing around with Scratch so…
PDF's aren't bad if you have a truly accessible way to read them, and Paperback does that for me anyway! I've only hit it with a few PDF's so far but it presented the information just fine when Chrome couldn't even open them. Granted, I don't know if any of them contained images and how it handles those cases, but I bet somebody in this thread does!
No it can't, and I have mentioned that to Quinn but also pointed out that it wouldn't strictly be a reader anymore, but they would still be very useful features and don't think I got a response so maybe they're just busy with other features and life and will get around to it at some point.
And, a PDF reader that can also fill out forms is a fundamentally different kind of user interface than the one implemented by Paperback (and Christopher Toth's QRead before it). Realistically, for anything besides Acrobat/Adobe Reader or Chromium itself to do it accessibly, it would probably entail an embedded web browser engine and converting PDF to HTML rather than a single text edit control.

Modern ebooks really, really need to be loaded in an HTML webview. The issue is that I want continuous reading, and none of the HTML implementations like Thorium support that.
By continuous reading, do you mean fine-grained saving of your position in the document, or something else? If the former, then yes, the fundamental problem is that Windows screen readers don't allow the application to know precisely where the virtual cursor is located. I ran into that in Serotek's DocuScan Plus; I had committed to an HTML view, then could only do bookmarks approximately.

But doing that requires loading the entire book into the HTML webview control, and now you get massive lag for various API related reasons. You can't do some sort of autoscroll to load content as you need it, because screen readers doing say all don't always update the focus position correctly, so you can't tell when they're about to hit the end of the currently loaded content. This is a thing I've thought about, and chatted with some folks about over coffee/beer.

And that would be fair exchange to have working links, footnotes, endnotes, media, math content, and all the rest. But I can think of no way with current screen readers and API's that we can do autoscroll. Kindle manages it, but they're doing...something custom that I don't know anything about. And I'm just not willing to give that up.

Doing a bug-for-bug compatible emulation of the Chromium accessibility tree that could fool JAWS's virtual buffer would probably be a tall order, but maybe Kindle isn't so bad.
@matt I've honestly been afraid to look at it too close. Kindle Cloud broke accessibility because people started using it as a way to remove Kindle DRM now that the other popular methods don't work. If I wanted too, it would be pretty easy to create a new synth driver for NVDA that uses say all as a way to extract the text from a Kindle book. For the record, my interest wouldn't be in bypassing DRM, but in making it easier for applications and toolkits other than the big two Windows browser engines to trigger the virtual cursor behavior in JAWS and NVDA.
@matt When you first open Kindle for PC, your ebook library is shown in what is just a standard web view. So they do have a full browser engine as part of Kindle. But they don't seem, from what I can tell, to be using it to show the actual ebook.
In fact, I would strongly discourage anyone from abusing the current accessibility of Kindle for Windows to circumvent DRM, thus escalating that particular cat-and-mouse game and ruining things for legitimate users.
This is very good info. This makes me think somebody needs to create an accessible PDF editor, which is probably a huge undertaking, assuming so since it hasn't been done in all these years of people in our community making software.

@matt Yup. So in short, if I wanted to make another ebook app that worked the way Kindle does, I'd need to write a custom virtual cursor implementation for NVDA to work with it.
NVDA is modular enough that the implementation work in NVDA, or in an add-on, wouldn't have to be done from scratch, but yes, as far as I can tell, some app-specific or toolkit-specific work would currently have to be done. And for JAWS, that would basically mean being big enough to get onto Vispero's development roadmap.
The question is whether JAWS scripting is powerful enough to closely emulate the existing virtual cursor behavior. The JAWS team themselves have chosen to implement their virtual buffer with gobs of C++ code.
@matt As other folks are saying: I could do all that work for free and without pay...or...I could just read my epubs in Kindle and get back to my actual job. But in short, this is why the current set of blindness made ebook readers are the way they are.
Fair enough. I have my own reasons for wanting to crack the problem of activating virtual cursor behavior for things that aren't Chromium or Firefox. Of course, I don't expect anyone to work on that unpaid on my behalf.
Servo recently got funding specifically to work on accessibility, so I'm wondering how that's going to play out, and if they're going to want to get me involved given my work on Rust GUI accessibility.

And speaking of fancy gases. I've heard a story about people constructing some apparatus for physical measurement. And for that they needed to have a gas with a very specific refractive index. It is possible to mix some gases with different indexes to reach the result, but I've heard it is a tedious process. Apparently those people wanted to avoid that. So, they have found in the catalogue the gas which was perfect for their needs, considering the refractive index, and they have placed an order for the purchase in the internal system. And because this particular gas has not been ordered previously, the order went through local health and safety department for vetting. Few days later the engineers were complaining about those "assholes from h&s department, rejecting the purchase".
Apparently, those assholes from h&s had checked also other properties of the gas. And I wish to be a fly on the wall in the room they did that. The gas was a neurotoxin. Of a very fancy kind. It is almost asymptomatic. The first observable symptom was a merriness. But if you observe it, and start investigating, it's already too late. At least you will die happy. I do not remember well, but I have impression, that this gas was also explosive. The point if this story is: please give some respect to those assholes from h&s. They can save your life 😅

Signal's president claimed it takes billions to replicate the availability and reliability of "hyperscalers" (AWS/Google/Microsoft/Cloudfare) that Signal uses.
@tomli what does IP address hiding have to do with the topic of the post? :) Anyway, Cloudfare probably sees all signal group members by the access pattern to in-chat media, including their IP address. Each #chatmail relay only sees IP addresses of its users but not of users of other relays.
@tomli now that's a stupid claim, only telegram is susceptible to network analysis due to plaintext message headers. cloudflare couldn't possibly figure out who you are sending Signal messages to

@tomli Depends in your MTA. Chatmail does, most MTAs do. The ludacris X-Originating-IP is mostly a ghost of the past. And unless you are acting as an MTA you are likely safe.

@jaseg what exactly is "poorly substantiated accusations" in our post? We have often applauded signal for their cryptography achievements but their infrastructure choices are a different thing. Infrastructure matters. And we were laying out what we are doing in the same post.

The latter is the interesting bit, since they structured their protocol considering the cloud provider untrusted. This means the provider learns very little about their users, and their main role is providing uptime.
By over-reducing your point to “cloud provider bad” you’re circumnavigating a whole informed discussion and effectively spreading fear, uncertainty and doubt to people who don’t understand how signal works at a technical level.
@jaseg well, even signal's president started off by viewing hyperscalers as problematic. We then layed out how we want to address the reliability and uptime challenges (through using cheap relays redundantly). It's tough technical challenges to realize the plans. But discussing infrastructure and different ways than giving 20+ millions to hyperscalers yearly is not FUD.
I'm not saying you don't have a point. I'm not a fan of these providers either, and I think @Mer__edith is uniquely qualified to understand the risks and benefits they have. My issue is with the reductionist view you were broadcasting in the first toot in this series, which didn't go into any of that nuance and read like FUD to me.

Google is going to make HTTPS required by default in Chrome in a year.
In the post there is quite a bit of talk about the problem of obtaining a cert for local network names. Hopefully their push to make everything-HTTPS will include local network addresses too. We really badly need it.
They kind of seem to say they will, but it's all talk until shown otherwise: "In the future, we hope to work to further reduce barriers to adoption of HTTPS, especially for local network sites."
An anonymous reader shares a report: After last week's major AWS outage took Signal along with it, Elon Musk was quick to criticize the encrypted messaging app's reliance on big tech.
GNOME 49 (which was shipped in freshly released Fedora 43 and Ubuntu 25.10 and also in rolling distros like openSUSE Tumbleweed and Arch) has a bug with some apps in XWayland, where they'll freeze if you have more than 1 screen.
The only workaround is to turn off all monitors except one. Or, if your app supports it, run with native Wayland instead of XWayland. Or wait for a minor release of Mutter before upgrading to GNOME 49.
Thunderbird (email) and RawTherapee (photo processing) become unresponsive. Thunderbird after a period of use - the UI becomes unresponsive to mouse or keyboard, though tool tips...
Sadly, some apps like Inkscape and darktable will freeze completely when you're using them in XWayland mode. And these same two apps don't fully work in native Wayland yet.

@hub I've found that darktable now works better in native Wayland than XWayland, except for the submenu issue (where it closes the menu when it tries to show a submenu, as it attempts to draw it off screen and hits a bug).
Too bad it defaults to XWayland and has that bug.
(Things like drag and drop into darktable even works in native Wayland, but not in XWayland.)

Any #ZFS folks want to offer me an opinion on the following? I have 2 ZFS pool of raidz2 with 7 2TB SAS drives each (about 11.5T). I want to add a LOG drive. I have a single SAS SSD that's 300G. When I suggested using a 1TB LOG drive earlier, someone said that was way too much. (which is why I picked up a used 300G SSD)
My question is whether it makes sense (is possible) to partition that drive into 2 partitions and have one pool use 1 partition as a log drive (e.g., 150G) and the other pool use the other partition as a log drive on the same physical device.
Is this going to be worse because it's just too much IO on one device? Is it reasonable? Any other ideas?
oh gosh, unless you know you are doing a lot of synchronous writes (almost never; databases and NFS mostly... maybe VMs???) you do not need a LOG at all.
If you do add a LOG, it just needs to be large enough to buffer the writes until they're flushed to the other vdevs. You honestly could get away with something as small as like 8GB for a low IO / homelab type environment. But you won't find a modern drive that small, so if you're going to do this just make it as small as possible. Pick quality over quantity here. SLC drives (do they even exist anymore?) are of course ideal.
Splitting the LOG device between multiple zpools isn't crazy. I have a tiny partition I use for LOG and then use the rest for L2 ARC which is another option to maximize the usage of your fast storage.
This is the most Sirius Cybernetics thing I’ve seen IRL. This was a floor mopping robot at the local QT. It had cute animated eyes and said “I’m cleaning the floor! Thank you for shopping at QT!” as it wandered around randomly, almost bumping into several people. It has a voice like a 12 year old girl.
But in short, this is why the current set of blindness made ebook readers are the way they are.
