The easiest way to install chatmail server is a small project written by a single person, meanwhile the #deltachat official server installation process is cluster of unintelligible documentation and a docker image that need multiple commands to setup properly.
How does that one dev build a better hosting experience than a company?
I don't think the official approach is harder if you have the required Debian server, and besides, one is using maddy that is a single binary and the later is a more solid battle-tested standard postfix+dovecot email server
Secure by default should have minimal configuration, exactly so that you can’t mess it up, with optional configuration flags that are hidden in the documentation reference.
@arcanechat Containers have solved this problem of compatibility, if you want more self hosters to run your stuff you make a simple docker compose example.
that single dev was actually supported by mainline #chatmail relay developers along the way, and besides, the Go-efforts (there are two) are not production ready yet.
Are there any plans to make chatmail and friends configurations more distro-agnostic or at least documented in the future, because I'm in the middle of packaging it for RHEL (and possibly Fedora) and so far it has been an interesting experience to even get the build dependencies packaged and I have not even arrived at digging the configurations out of cmdeploy yet.
It's true that the repository for now targets Debian12 but the deployment client (where cmdeploy is installed) should not be distro-dependent. There recently landed a new documentation side btw chatmail.at/doc/relay/
Alright so I got a USB hub that can pass through power as a replacement for my Thunderbolt dock as I suspect the Dock's USB hub was failing and surprise surprise I can't use the HDMI ports on it, not picked up by my laptop.
Oh also the laptop's own HDMI isn't working. Monitor seems to detect something for a split second and then signal lost
alright the new USB hub runs "usbconfig" instantly, but with the old Thunderbolt3 dock it would hang for 2 seconds sometimes. It must have been failing. That explains why I'd have issues with devices refusing to communicate through it properly sometimes without a power cycle of my laptop, even.
could that have also been a reason why I had some weird MacOS issues? That same USB hub in the dock was misbehaving and it was screwing with my Mac?
does it ever count as a real job if you get hired and you sit at a desk for months and months and you never do any work at all because the siloed teams are too busy fighting about what access you're supposed to have and what the scope of your job is?

and like... most people are cool about it. appreciate it kinda. but then there are these moments where the bot gets something wrong (yeah llms arent perfect, shocking) and people just. go at it. sarcastic comments about how useless it is. "can we get a human instead" yeah sure let me just volunteer 24/7 to write alt text for every image on fedi.
like i KNOW it's not perfect. i know the alt text can be verbose or miss important context sometimes. but it's FREE. it's LOCALLY HOSTED. it's OPEN SOURCE. it uses minimal energy. im trying to help.
and its MEANT to be used along with a human corrector. that's what the person posting the image is responsible for! if it gets something wrong its the poster's job to fix it. to edit it.
and the thing is i want to keep running it. i think it's useful. and clearly a lot of people think so too... but fuck i'm tired of being @ mentioned every time it's not perfect. tired of managing expectations for a free service provided as-is.... and tired of the emotional labor of running community infrastructure while people treat it like a product they paid for.

Windows 11 Tip. All of a sudden, my computer worked properly, but when I hit windows key + T, to go to the taskbar, I just landed on a start button and it said taskbar unavailable. This confused me, I had no idea what happened to the taskbar, and no idea how to get it back. Luckily Gemini helped me out, and my taskbar is back and everything is good again! So just in case this happens to anyone else, I thought I would share what I did to get it back. It seems that sometimes Windows Explorer clitches and this is one thing that can happen. To hopefully fix it, 1, hit control + shift + escape to bring up the task manager. 2, You should be on the processes tab and land in a list of all of the processes. Hit the end key to jump to the end of the list, then arrow up to Windows Explorer. 3, hit shift F10 for the context menu. 4, find Restart in the menu and hit enter. 5, This will totally restart Windows Explorer and all it controls, which one is the taskbar. So here's a new fresh hell. Attempting to access seekingalpha.com. When I try to open the site, I get the following: "Before we continue... Press & Hold to confirm you are a human (and not a bot).". There's a button on the page that you apparently need to press and hold, using a mouse, because of course if you don't have the ability to use a mouse, then you're obviously not human.
