If you're currently on a massive server like mastodon.social, you might want to consider moving your account to a smaller server.

You can keep your followers when you change servers, here's how to do it: mstdn.social/@feditips/1079394…

You can find reliable servers at joinmastodon.org/communities (all the servers listed there agree to the covenant at joinmastodon.org/covenant). Try to pick one with fewer people.

There are lots of good things about smaller servers:

-Better moderation, because there are more staff per member.

-Smaller servers tend to have more personality, with a village feel.

-The local timeline on smaller servers is much more readable.

-Smaller servers protect the Fediverse as a whole from being taken over, because lots of smaller servers are harder to buy than a few big servers.

-It's easier to make a difference on smaller servers. It's easier to discuss things with the admin and other members.

Profiles and posts on Mastodon and the Fediverse have public versions you can share with people who aren't on the Fediverse.

To see the public version of a profile, click on the profile picture. This will open the public version of the profile in a new tab.

To see the public version of a post, click on the datestamp below the post. This will open the public version of the post in a new tab.

These "public pages" are handy for sharing with friends, because they don't require logging in to see them.

Public pages are also very useful for something else:

If you paste the URL address of a public page into the search box on Mastodon, and then search for it, the post or profile will appear within your server. This is handy if you cannot find a post or person by searching, but you know they exist on another server.

Searching for a URL like this forces your server to "notice" the profile or post.

It also works with URLs from PeerTube, PixelFed etc.

I thought it would be a cool idea to create a #lemmy #community for #fediverse/ #federation #introductions!

Problem with introduction posts is they tend to get buried after a short while and depending on how many other instances yours may know about others someone's intro may not federate that well (or fast) with the rest of the network.

Plus, some instances like #mastodon only allow 500 characters in a post. Not a lot of room to write an introduction. 🙂

This was one of the use cases and goals I had for creating federated.community to kind of provide an alternative.

Anyway, to kick things off I've posted my own introduction and you're more than welcome to post one as well.

I also thought it would be cool to allow instance admins to post an "introduction" about their Instances too, so new users to the fediverse could find a little more information out about people's instances too.

Thoughts? Is this a good idea? What do you think?

There are a bunch of other social apps, but to be honest #Mastodon for me seems to be the most polished & has the most users (so it's the most social).

If you can think of a good reason to check out the others please let me know why 🙂

Some aren't just microblogging, but do other things too.

Connecting to instances without relay

Hello there

Yesterday i found out that you are able to add #Mastodon instances to relays (did not worked with #Friendica servers). I'm not sure though, if this actually works, or Friendica only adds it as relay and it does nothing (no messages received so far).

Question is, is there similar way to connect to Friendica instances?

I would have deployed relay to do the job, but it seems that most used Pleroma one suffers of bug that does not let me manage it.

Thanks
Roman

👴 OK kids...

Before #Mastodon, before #socialMedia, before the #Web, we had the #BBS.

If you wanna learn from those who came before, here's a comprehensive 5-hour #documentary about bulletin board systems. 🤓

(Of course, given the world back then it's mostly 5 hours of old white guys. So it goes!)

ℹ️ #Privacy is a major concern for us here on toot.wales as well as many other #Mastodon servers.

After joining, please check your profile (link below) to enable or disable:

1. Require follow requests
Manually control who can follow you by requiring your approval

2. Suggest account to others
Allow your account to be discovered by strangers

3. Hide your social graph
Don't let others see who follows you, and who you follow.

discovery/discoverability

1) in addition to a bio, consider also making an #introduction / #introduction post also check this tag to find people who are also new and their interests

2) communitywiki.org/trunk is a wonderful place to find people who are active. it is human moderated. if you decide to stick around and have the bandwidth to do so, consider joining a list to welcome others as well.

As an alternative to FediTips, you might want to also check out @noelle's "Increasingly Less-Brief Guide to Mastodon":

It's got slightly different takes on many issues, but hopefully seeing a different perspective will give you a fuller understanding of how Mastodon works.

There have been many reports lately that Facebook is blocking links to joinmastodon.org

If you are still on Facebook, please keep spreading the word about Mastodon and the Fediverse.

If joinmastodon.org doesn't work, try posting a link to a reliable instance people can join. There are so many instances, Facebook cannot block all of them from being mentioned.

That Facebook are even doing this implies the Fediverse is on their radar, which is quite an achievement in itself!
