I was reflecting this morning on the lie #music #streaming told those of us who love listening to music, but aren't musicians ourselves. We were told that it would give us access to more varieties of music, and spontaneously introduce us to stuff we might love. Yet, I found more #indie music by mistake on file sharing back in the day than I ever find on Apple Music or Spotify. This is a good example: as a silly teenager, I searched for "pretty girls", and found this song amongst the porn. It says it's buy "The Capricorns". It's not on any of the music streaming services. There is a compressed copy on YouTube, but it only has 200 views. None of the streaming sites would ever have recommended this to me. I don't know who's singing, or anything about the band or song. Odds are I never will. And I kind of treasure that. #AltText was over 1500 characters. It is in this thread. I did my best, but I don't know how to describe music!

One of my favorite holiday songs has alway been “Carol of the Bells.” It has such a different tone than all the others.

It was only today that I learned that a Ukrainian composer wrote the music in 1916, and that the original lyrics had nothing to do with Christmas. The song was titled “Shchedryk” which means ‘bountiful evening’ in Ukrainian. It tells the story of a swallow flying into a family’s home to tell of the bountiful new year to come.

The Ukrainian version is so beautiful. YouTube version attached if you care to listen.

Brenda Lee's "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree" is No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 — 65 years after it was released. This breaks the record for the longest wait from a song's release to its hitting the top spot. Billboard takes a look at how much airplay it's getting, the history of the song, and the 65th anniversary celebrations, including its first video and Lee's new TikTok account.

When I was a wee little child, maybe 10-ish, my parents told me they had a surprise for me. Right now I can't remember if it was for my birthday, or just something they decided to do. They got me to sit down and put some stuff in my ears, and told me to wait a bit...

And then, music came out. But music like I had never heard.

It was the first time I heard a CD player. They bought me the player and a collection of 20 disks of classical music. I was learning to play back then, and wasn't very familiar with it, but it was such an awakening: the clarity of the sound, the way the instruments could all be located in space, the dynamic range, from the smallest brush of a string to the booming brass or heavy tympanis... Not to mention, there was so much complexity: dozens of instruments doing different things, all in harmony, all creating a wholesome, glorious, beautiful whole...

I remember spending entire evenings listening to music, discovering a new composer, or enjoying a recent favourite. As time went on, my tastes developed. I'm not especially fond of most opera, and find large, symphonic works often too much. Counterpoint or chamber works I love, however.

It made such an impression on me, and it was all a combination of what then was new technology, and the choice of the music itself, making for an experience that shaped me to this day.

Until today only family and close friends have heard this, but it's time to start sharing. Here's the first song from what will be my first EP!

A really nifty deep dive on the current state of #AI #VoiceCloning #music #CoverSongs, via getting the artists #WeirdAlYankovic parodied to ‘cover’ his songs

It mainly shows how distinctive Weird Al’s voice is, though MechaLorde singing ‘Foil’ is pretty good

AI has the potential to disrupt the whole comedy genre of pop-cultural pastiche and parody. Why would you watch comedians doing impressions of celebrities, or riffing on pop-culture texts, when you could just manipulate the celebrity yourself using AI?

Still, what constantly annoys me about the state of AI-driven parody (eg the meme of pop-culture characters as #Balenciaga models) is that the writing underpinning them is so poor

So even if we get to a point where we can completely puppeteer real people’s likenesses and voices, it still fails if there isn’t decent writing

Weird Al’s writing has always been excellent and hilarious. I mean, lines like in ‘Fat’, his parody of ‘Bad’: “When I sit around the house, I really sit around the house”

So far, that kind of stuff can’t be automatically generated – AI-created comedy is of the surreal and absurdist kind that reads as an unintentional, “machine-innocent” artefact of the generation process

Took me a while to remember the name of the weird, um… instrument that turned up on my timeline. Otomatone - and this is how I first heard of it, on Rob Scallon’s Otomatone Metal… youtube.com/watch?v=dSeJ73JpUx…

In 1920, Mamie Smith became the FIRST Black American to record a Blues song. "Crazy Blues” ushered in a new era of "race records.” Previously, white singers copied Black vocal styles in blues recordings, while Black entertainers like Ma Rainey, Ethel Waters, & Bessie Smith were confined to the "Chitlin Circuit." Mamie Smith’s success paved the way for black blues & jazz musicians to thrive.

Hi all. If you're looking for someone to tune #Vocaloid for you, I've started taking #commissions. I'm trying to raise money to move out of state, and I could use all the help I can get. I can only tune #HatsuneMiku in Japanese. I went into more detail on Vocaverse Network, so I'll post that thread here. If you're interested, you can DM me here if you wish. Any help is greatly appreciated. vocaverse.network/threads/im-t… #Miku #Music

I rarely post any of my music online as I just mess about with stuff for my own amusement and I have extremely low self-confidence. Basically I think my music is shit.
Anyway here's something I uploaded about half a decade ago where I tried to make 80s/90s Japanese arcade game music even though I no bugger all about making Japanese video game music.
I did it with the Korg M1 plugin to try to get that old sound chip vibe, and didn't use much dynamics processing because those chips didn't, also I'm horrendous at mixing.
Anyway it is what it is, so enjoy, or something.
No visuals even though it's on YouTube. I put it up there because SoundCloud was and probably still is a pain to use with a screen reader, at least on iOS.

According to some, #WestAfrica is a hotspot of the most talented guitarists around. I agree, but I freely admit I've been biased for a long long time now.
This is Fanta Bourama by Djelimady Tounkara. Considering the above statement, he's mixing in so many styles in this, from #flamenco to jeli ngoni-innspired melodies to #jazzy chromaticism, with immaculate technique and flair, and he makes it all sound effortless. He used to be in the legendary Rail Band before going solo, and is rightfully considered an African #guitar hero. Though not as famous—globally-speaking—as Ali Farka Touré (who occasionally played with the Rail Band’s competition, Les Ambassadeurs), he’s of that same generation of musical pioneers.

Oh hell! Have Mansa as well; an atmospheric and expressive instrumental track progressing to a danceable groove.

First performance of O Canada at the Congrès national des Canadiens-Français. The song would later become the national anthem of Canada #OTD in 1880.

The song was originally commissioned by Lieutenant Governor of Quebec Théodore Robitaille for the 1880 Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day ceremony; Calixa Lavallée composed the music, after which words were written by the poet and judge Sir Adolphe-Basile Routhier. The original French lyrics were translated to English in 1906. via @Wikipedia
