@autistics

So, tbh, I would not change anything about having #Autism and #ADHD. Sure, if I had been diagnosed properly and had more support, some aspects of my life would have been better. But I have no regrets on having a semi-eidetic memory, being able to recognize patterns, thinking outside the box, etc. What I could have used less of? Being bullied, not knowing there were others like me out there (and the subsequent isolation), over-masking and paying the price, having meltdowns from not understanding sensory overstimulation, etc. But it's never too late to delve into self-understanding and awareness, and, most importantly, building community with like-others!

Is autistic self-identification valid?

I just completed a quantitative research paper comparing autism traits in medically diagnosed autistic people with the same traits in self-identifying autistic people and I can definitively say with more stats behind it than I care to ever think about again, THERE IS NO DIFFERENCE!

In a full-on #antivax #ConspiracyTheory moment, #Trump vowed again to figure out “what is going on” with high rates of #autism, by tasking his #health secy, #RFKJr, w/the responsibility. This question has been a focus for Trump since his first term — & is a source of concern for Democrats & in the #PublicHealth community.

Nice to see official publications taking note that the vast majority of us reject the terms "person with autism", "high-functioning", and "low-functioning". Those are harmful, and from our perspective, inaccurate.

I am an **Autistic person** with **low to moderate support needs**.

URGENT :boost_request: please help Dej with rent!

"still trying to get help from whatever rent assistance program my housing stabilization worker can find (no luck at all yet, i haven't heard from them since mid-november), i'm at the "how to market myself" point of my self-employment thing and haven't received the grant for that yet, and everything's still taking forever to fall into place still due to bureaucracy and everything moving really slow. i'm hoping stuff will work out fine in the new year, but...i honestly dunno what'll happen at this point."

Some of us Internet Weirdos are doing a survey on Neurodivergence and Education.

If you are in school, college, university or whatnot, or have been in the last five years, could you spend a few minutes filling in this out for us?

We're writing guides for educators and learners and the more input we have, the better we'll be.

Appreciated folx!

For years, we used to explain to folks that we experienced a phonological delay in processing speech or sounds, and that it was likely linked to us being autistic.

We only later worked out that we're actually AuDHD (inattentive ADHD and autistic) and that there's an actual medical term for this: auditory processing disorder.

If you're some flavour of neurospicy, you might have it too without realising. Common signs and symptoms include:

  • speaking louder or softer than is situationally appropriate;
  • difficulty remembering lists or sequences;
  • needing words or sentences to be repeated;
  • impaired ability to memorize information learned by listening;
  • interpreting words too literally;
  • needing assistance to hear clearly in noisy environments;
  • relying on accommodation and modification strategies;
  • finding or requesting a quiet work space away from others;
  • requesting written material when attending oral presentations; and
  • asking for directions to be given one step at a time.

It heavily overlaps with ADHD and autism :ADHD_Butterfly::AutismSymbol:

Hope this is helpful to someone :NeurodiversitySymbol:

Just learned about this really cool theme park in Texas specifically designed for kids with disabilities. Apparently this guy was having tons of trouble finding a theme park able to accommodate his daughter Morgan who has multiple disabilities. Eventually, he soled his successful business and spent $50,000,000 to build his own.
It's got 25 different attractions, tons of events, thousands of positive reviews ETC.
