Jeff Geerling got the brunt of YouTube wrath when he showed people how to host their own media {media that they legally own, which means that they either have the originals, or have paid for whatever digital version they have} with the power of Open Source tools
Jeff explicitly made sure that he never ever told people how to circumvent subscriptions or worse. Nothing that could harm YouTube bottomline was ever discussed in this video.

Yet for reasons obvious to Open Source people like me YouTube gave him his second strike.

3rd Strike and you're gone. This is how Google / this is how Alphabet is treating their Golden Geeze.

Creators like Jeff are very valuable both to the people who follow them and to YouTube. However Google seems to be at Super odds with Open Source, needing it to run their data centers but hating it because they have to share the code again that they've worked upon.

Google is a paradoxical Company which is being controlled by Alphabet, a schizophrenic Entity drunk on power Ads and control

To me you're a star @geerlingguy keep Shining

Is there a comparison somewhere of the resource requirements for hosting various Fediverse platforms?

I know some of them have pretty low minimum system requirements, but they can grow quickly into resource hogs the more active users you have. For example this Friendica.World instance I'm on seems to struggle handing less than 4,000 accounts but various Mastodon and Pixelfed instances have hundreds of thousands of accounts without any apparent difficulty. Though I don't know what resources they have available to them. Some platforms appear to be more scalable than others.

I've been reluctant to run a server myself for a variety of reasons, but the big ones are not knowing how much it will cost, what kind of hosting it would require, or which platform to run.

It should be obvious by now most people do not want to run their own server, they want to go sign up on the biggest server for a platform they can find and let someone else assume the expense and risks of running it. So does anybody know what the lowest resource, most scalable, most stable platform is that can handle the most active users/accounts? Is there a nifty comparison table somewhere?

In case you don't know, I run an independent UK hosting company called Brightbox. We offer virtual servers, load balancers, SQL services, object storage, container registry and more. All entirely UK owned and operated. No bullshit.

If you give us a try, do let me know how you get on. I'm happy to help!

Myself and my good friend @bumble (who runs a variety of server types on the fediverse), are joining forces to offer #hosting for #GoToSocial servers.

It's early days but we'd be keen to hear from anyone who wants to try running their own GoToSocial but doesn't have the skill, want, or equipment to run their own server.

The aim is to simply charge for running costs for the server. We will not take any costs from this (unless we end up with hundreds of them!). We anticipate a basic instance for one user (or a small handful) will be 5 euros per month and the charge is month to month. You pay each month in advance, and can cancel any time.

All you need is a domain name (or a sub-domain of your existing domain). We can help with this, or help you buy one for a few dollars/euros. We will handle all admin of the server.

Initially we are only looking for a few people to participate. If you are interested send me a direct message.

New blog post about the recent migration of our project's website and build infrastructure, kindly sponsored by our new #hosting provider, Mythic Beasts (here in the Fediverse as @beasts ).

The transition was fairly smooth for most of our services, but let us know if you spot anything not working which should be!

One thing that is needed is a beginner-level #tutorial on the subject of "dealing with the #hosting industry." I don't know the ins and outs of procuring any kind of hosting other than #LAMP stack, which, as far as I know, won't accommodate #Mastodon.

Does anyone have a contact we can talk to at Hetzner to get them working with Fedora CoreOS so it’s supported as a first-class citizen on their platform?

The Fedora CoreOS folks are on board, now we just need someone from Hetzner.

If anyone has time to help the lovely @codeberg folks with improving accessibility, please take a look at this issue:

So I’ve finally found the motivation to start moving my/Small Technology Foundation’s repositories to @codeberg and, my goodness, is it just a breath of fresh air…

And it’s even the little things like having the site automatically adhere to your dark/light mode settings. Unlike fucking G****b.
