“My Request to Google on #Accessibility”
adrianroselli.com/2025/05/my-r…
I’m asking this massive company to stop releasing features & products & ideas that are obvious barriers.
And I want them to stop expecting free labor from the community.
It’s tiring, frustrating, and disrespectful.

Hey, Alphabet or Google or Chrome or whomever in that illegal monopoly continues to release things to the web platform that are full of accessibility barriers, I have what I think is a straightforward request.Adrian Roselli
this week's #gnome foundation report is late, so it didn't make it into thisweek.gnome.org/
but here it is!

Updates on what happens across the GNOME project from week to weekthisweek.gnome.org
Two new themes have dropped:
For all the #train enthusiasts out there: mapcomplete.org/historic_rolli… shows a map of historical locomotives and other rolling stock that are permanently placed somewhere - e.g. monuments, in a museum or just abandoned.
mapcomplete.org/historic_aircr… is a similar map showing #aircraft , interlinking with #wikidata for the models.
Beware: they are dangerous: they are quite addictive to get everything right...
Today's fun with OpenStreetMap and route planners: A route planner for Denmark that refuses to drive on roads named after men.
About 40,000 Danish roads (= 35 % af all Danish roads) have been tagged with name:etymology:wikidata to tag into Wikidata's structured content.
Other ideas for funny restrictions? Roads named after politicians of specific political parties? Roads named after royals? (¡Viva la revolución!) Roads named after Swedes?

@pietervdvn Yes, 40.000 individual streets when aggregated locally and grouped by municipalities. In OSM terms it's about 160.000 ways, but MapComplete helps group local ways together.
I have been to the library a lot for the last two years.
@deobald The construction thread is at mstdn.mx/@federicomena/1140887…
Do you have a pointer to the desks you mention? I'm not having luck searching for that...
I picked up the idea from watching Kids on the Slope. There's a low desk that appears briefly in one scene, and when I saw that I had to stop everything and take note of it. Perfect for my alcove (alcove thread at mstdn.mx/@federicomena/1090095… )
jeeeeez you’re as bad as my dad! see: bsky.app/profile/calmudgeon.bs…
very cool. :)
sadly, no desk suggestions. i kind of bastardized a coffee table and lifted myself with a little wooden platform and spare meditation cushion. i’ve duplicated this at my cabin: another old coffee table + meditation cushion combo but with the legs cut down a bit.
i think the ideal is to make one, like you did.
AI is a horrible tool in software development.
A team leader explains the problems in this post on Reddit:
"AI Slop PR's are burning me and my team out hard"
lets be honest, if they can't be bothered to review the code before committing these same people would have been copy and pasting directly from stack overflow
Fire them all

A great photographer is one where even when you know how great they are and are familiar with their main body of work, one of their photos can still take your fucking breath away. This one just floored me.

Announcing: justaqrcode.com.
Tired of "free" QR code generators that are full of ads and trackers, that share your data, and that want to sell you something? Me too. Here's my act of resistance: I made a one-page site that works entirely in your browser to generate a simple QR code. And that's all it does. You can download the HTML page and run it locally, even. Read the source; nothing up my sleeves. Just a QR code.
My offer to you -- I will continue to pay for the domain name and web hosting for it, myself. If you find it valuable, you can pay it back by creating your own useful thing for the world and releasing it for free. Let's take back the friendly web, one vexingly-monetized utility at a time!

Riiight.
Firefox users are reporting an 'artificial' load time on YouTube videos. YouTube says it's part of a plan to make people who use adblockers "experience suboptimal viewing, regardless of the browser they are using."Jason Koebler (404 Media)

American English wasn't the only option for asserting our independence in the minds of some of the Founding Fathers. They also considered making French, Greek, and other languages the "American" language.

Discord has become the place for gaming communities on the internet. It just celebrated its 10th anniversary. But as it tries to grow, one of the big challenges it faces is that it isn’t a good replacement for forums.Jay Peters (The Verge)
