Even when not using dedicated OS for privacy, just disable/remove Google crap, including "Google" app. Disabling that one blocks so many evil Google stuff including their stupid assistants on any brand of phone.
Just wanted to specifically call out @e_mydata as another lovely deGoogled Android alternative. Their installation process was among the easiest in terms of technical skills required (i.e., no command line use required) and having @murena offer the OS preinstalled on phones is, in my opinion, a great way to get the less-technically inclined folks on board.

I would also vote no. It changes output in a significant way with just an env variable. It feels like an easy trap to fall into, with no obvious way out.

good decision. Using environment variables as a secondary api is always an abuse. It introduced an ambiguity about which takes priority: env or command line flags?
It is terrible for discoverability: I can see the flags that are set, but I would have to inspect every environment variable and then find a list of which ones curl is affected by.
This is the exact reason global variables are frowned upon in any context!
Also generic env names imply multi-tool agreement that is doomed.

After so many years, NVDA add-ons still keep surprising me. Today I found a mod of the Enhanced Find Dialog add-on which, apart from its interesting features like search history, replaces the annoying Not found error message with a single "not found" text announcement, like JAWS. see now that you have said those commands, I am already confused! lol! I am just used to the jaws curser, especially when you rout it to where your PC curser is. it stays in the window you are in, and you just use normal command to read it. up arrow, or numpad-8 to go up a line, down arrow or numpad-2 to go down a line, ETC.
you don't have to use something like insert 7 on the numpad to get into a different thing, jsut to read what you are near. this is why I get so confused, and frustrated.
True - it may or may not be the case depending on what you want it to do. However, based on my experience at least, the JAWS cursor is really easier to manipulate, and it can be explained to new users with a whole lot ease compared with NVDA's rather complicated object navigation and manipulation. @JamminJerry
@JamminJerry If reading a whole line of objects at a time, you would presumably need a command to step through those individually though, if you needed to get to and activate one specific one - so neither approach is actually simpler, they're just different and which one will seem simpler is likely the one you know better :)

now what would really would be cool, not that it could be done is something in settings where you could have a checkbox, or something to set the numpad to either work like the jfw numpad, or the NVDA numpad. does this make sense? so if you put it in the NVDA mode, it would do this whole object nav, flat nav, ETC. that confuses the hell out of me, or if you had it in JFW mode, it would just read lines, characters, words, where you are like the JFW curser does. smile. I don't think the JFW model is necessarily more complicated. While you can navigate line by line via the JAWS cursor, you can also navigate word by word, meaning object by object, and you can left-click the word or object easily. With JAWS, Ccursors are a lot more similar when it comes to manipulation. @JamminJerry

@JamminJerry No problem (and for the record, I have used Jaws, just not in .... about ten years) - and while there are arguably things which one screen reader does better than the other (and that goes both ways), there are many things which are going to feel easier or preferrable based on what you know (I'm wary to bring up the Eloquence / eSpeak comparison here, even though I'm thinking about it. But I won't start that, so pretend I didn't think anything! 🤣)

@JamminJerry LOL - I was the person who made the switch more than 10 years ago! And I was quite familiar with the JAWS cursor. But there's a lot more to it than the cursor war. NVDA, especially in its current form, offers a lot more which I find satisfactory, and its object navigation, while more complicated, gets the job done. Try using Fluent Reader with JAWS 2025, and you'll be hugely disappointed. @NVAccess
LOL - don't bring up that Eloquence/ eSpeak stuff please! But while JAWS offers Eloquence natively, NVDA, via add-ons, can better utilize it. So for those who are willing to look around, the Eloquence experience with NVDA is really superior IMO. @JamminJerry
Sadly no. 🫦🫦 I haven't purchased that guide. It may be better explained there - not sure. But I'm sure better explanations in the free manual would help more users as it's about the heart and soul of NVDA not its extra features like, say, advanced MS Word support. @JamminJerry
@JamminJerry The user guide isn't designed to teach you the features, it's designed more as a reference - many people HAVE learnt their way around the screen reader with it of course, but we made the training material to better fill that need. The training introduces say "Moving between objects", explains it and the keys, then has a step by step activity for you to do, and then a "bonus" activity which is a similar task but without giving you the keys each step of the way this time.
Good to know. Guess I should purchase it one of these days. But since I'm quite familiar with NVDA and the NVDA certificate isn't sadly recognized here as a resume booster, I don't feel motivated to do it. @JamminJerry
@JamminJerry That's ok, and the material IS designed to teach NVDA, so while you likely may pick up some things here and there reading it, as you do already have great NVDA skills, you wouldn't get as much out of working through it as someone else might :) I'll have to find someone who learnt object navigation from the training mateiral to see how they find it.
WIth the certification, it will be like any private accreditation - some may recognise it and some may not. It would be a phenomenal amount of work to have it recognised as an officially government endorsed certificate even in one country (or in some places, per state).
Thanks. I'm now taking a look at NVDA User Guide, 5.4 Object Navigation in particular. While it is clearly and neatly written, the info presented there is, IMO, quite short. I can see how it can confuse someone who comes from JAWS with its ease of using the JAWS cursor. @JamminJerry

One more important point while we're at Input gestures. If we assign a key stroke, like NVDA+F, to the find/ search function, NVDA, unlike JAWS, doesn't issue a warning to indicate that the key stroke has already been taken by a command, giving users the chance to continue or stop. This way, users will end up modifying stuff without necessarily knowing they are removing a pre-defined key stroke. @JamminJerry
@JamminJerry For $32 Australian, there is little reason for most users not to. I realise not everyone can afford even that (in which case, reach out to us, we will help you!) - and for average day to day use, you can likely get by for quite a while with the quick start guide (section 2 of the user guide) and the rest of the user guide. Most users shouldn't need object navigation right away - it IS an advanced skill.
@asael @JamminJerry Good point, and that does of course highlight a different issue. The training materail has only been translated into a few languages (and mostly distributed locally in those cases). But I think our translators would riot if we suddenly through the training material at all and expected them to translate it given how much extra work it would be! Definitely something for us to consider though

Really don't want to complain, but if the certificate isn't involved, I guess new users would rather purchase TTS engines instead of a user guide. And as NVDA gets advertised as the screen reader of choice in developing countries, paying that amount, however meager, would be out of the question for most users there. And in countries like Iran, paying for stuff outside the country requires Herculean efforts. @JamminJerry

@JamminJerry So coming at this as a JAWS convert as well, I found the most jarring part of switching was no JAWS cursor. But for me, the easiest way of thinking about it is that screen review works in a lot of places the JAWS cursor did. For those it doesn't, you just need to find the right object. A folder's properties in the file manager, for example, if I want to see the size of a folder, I go into its properties. In JAWS, I route JAWS to PC and cursor up. with NVDA on a laptop, I use NVDA+UP instead (I'm on laptop layout). Now sometimes I'm in object mode, so I switch to screen with NVDA+page-up, and then NVDA+up/down works just like regular up/down in JAWS did, with the added benefit that I can still work with the focus, and have commands to copy a selection. Same applies for objects, like console windows. I can just NVDA+UP in object mode rather than screen to read console output. yes, I have to change mode sometimes, and yes, I'm using NVDA plus up/down rather than just the cursor, but that also means I can read through console output and type new stuff in without losing my place. it's a change for sure, but not as big a one as it first appeared.
@JamminJerry also, I know I can just go up to the parent object in the example I gave. the screen review is more akin to what a JAWS cursor user might see, was my point.
@cachondo see for me, you already lost me. I am so cinfused. lol. I am a jaws user, that is trying to use NVDA more, and this whole object nav, and such just frustrates me, because I can't seem to grasp it like everyone else does.
@JamminJerry We do look for ways to get it into the hands of people in the developing countries easier. For instance we got some funding a few years ago to have the material translated by local agencies on the ground in several south-east asian countries and that was a great success. And TBH, for a technical user such as yourself, object navigation is probably one of the few areas where some users would benefit from the material rather than just picking it up from the user guide etc
@JamminJerry it can be confusing. :) NVDA's object navigation literally lets you move around each object on the screen. The problem is, that almost anything is an object. Like the focused object might literally be the OK button in a dialog box, so you can only really then get around the O and the K of the text, BEFORE COMING OUT OF THAT OBJECT to explore further. How the objects all relate to each other, which are siblings, which parents, which children, is the thing to wrap your head around that really blows most people's minds.
Screen review can be a lifesaver here because in some cases, it replicates the JAWS cursor's ability to explore the screen regardless of the object hierarchy. So, like in that properties dialog box I mentioned earlier, it'd let you see everything on the screen: folder size, number of files, and so on.
@JamminJerry I meant shouldn't need to learn object navigation in say their first week as a screen reader user - eventually yes! It is of course extremely useful :)

@cachondo ok, so now my next stupid question is how do I use the review thing as apose to object nav? I assume object nav is what I am using when I am doing the insert 7, and then using the 7 key to go up line by line in the properties diolog box?
@JamminJerry so when you use the 7 key, you're moving the review cursor. NVDA plus 1 or 7 changes what mode that cursor is in, from object to screen usually, or document if you happen to be on a web page. You should find that using numpad 7 and 9 to go up and down will work either in the current object or, if that's not enough data, use NVDA plus 1 or 7 to change mode then try 7 and 9 again to move around the screen. Objects will be things like your terminal windows. Screen will work on older native windows screens, like folder properties. Document are virtualised things: web pages, pdf's, OCR results.

@cachondo will deffinitly keep that in mind. I know one thing that doesn't work well for me is the command prompt. I log into a raspberry py that has a ham radio transever in it, a Shari, to do things like make sure it is up to date, things like that. when I try using 7 and 9 in there, I just hear top of window blank, or something like that, and it drives me nuts. smile.
@JamminJerry so as soon as you hear that blank, hit your NVDA plus 1 or 7 to change to object navigation. all the text of your command prompt session is in that object if you're just using the native windows command prompt
@JamminJerry Are the training materials integrated with NVDA's translation system like the user guide is? I don't think so, and that makes them next to useless to 80+ percent of new users.
@cachondo @JamminJerry basically, the JAWS cursor and the way NVDA does things are almost exact opposites. The JAWS cursor is a mode where you first bring the cursors in sync (route jaws to pc), then you switch to the JAWS cursor, and use your regular reading keys to look around the spot you were already at to get more information about that context. You can then click, or right-click, or what have you, to interact with anything in that area should you need to, and you can pretty much veer away from that area if necessary and explore the entire screen. What NVDA does is different in that by default, all cursors already tend to follow each other, and you don't jump into another "mode" to explore the screen that way, but rather you move NVDA in a different way, almost akin to how VoiceOver works, in order to do the same thing.
@zersiax @cachondo @JamminJerry Also you can virtualize the content under the JAWS cursor, i.e., bring it to a browser-like environment and then read it at your pace, or copy to clipboard. I'm really sorry to NVDA devs and fans out there, but after so many years I can't get used to absence of JAWS cursor analog in NVDA, I use it every day in JAWS, particularly in the console/terminal environment with lengthy command outputs. also, at least in Windows Terminal, if you maximize the screen, it allows you to scroll past view. So, if your command outputs three screens of info, you can just scroll with your Up Arrow.
@menelion @zersiax @JamminJerry But you can just scroll up the view of the NVDA object in the console, too. exactly the same. You can set markers and copy and paste, all whilst not hooking your keyboard away from the current task.
@cachondo @zersiax @JamminJerry I heard I could, but I've never managed to. I keep hearing "Top" and "bottom" every time and it drives me nuts, to be honest.
@menelion @zersiax @JamminJerry it's a misleading report to have screen and object review mode inasmuch as very few people seem to know what the object under the cursor contains.
In console windows, though, screen seems to be nothing and the object is where it's at. Literally. Switch to object mode with NVDA plus page-up/down or NVDA plus numpad 1 or 7 and you'll find all your console output beautifully accessible.
@JamminJerry I amended the guide to reflect that Remote is now part of core. I haven't used JAWS for any more than a few minutes at a time for a while now either.
What's really strange about this is that, for me anyway, I can leave it in a mode such as Screen Review and it seems to remember that when cycling through the review modes, but if I quit using the Object nav commands to move in the normal way then use them again, it acts as though it's back in Object Review mode. Maybe I'm missing something...?
@miki @JamminJerry That's true, though the reason is firstly because we charge for the training material, so that would introduce issues of fairness and payment to translators, as wel as introduce a significant amount more work for translators. We have made arrangements in some languages as previously noted, but we haven't found a one size fits all approach to this yet.
@GamingWithEars @JamminJerry The ribbon in Word is a good example - With regular object nav you go into the 'Home" ribbon (object), then down into the Clipboard object, then to paste, cut, copy, etc, then back out of that container & across to the Font object and into that to font name, then font size, bold, italic, etc, etc. Advantage is moving by next object you won't end up out of that font section. With flat navigation, you press next and go through all of those in roughly that order
@GamingWithEars At the very least, the User guide, I mean the free one, should make a more detailed distinction between flattened object navigation vs non-flattened object navigation, or what is simply called Object navigation. It's mentioned really briefly, and my understanding, probably wrong though, is that flattened navigation is an attempt to emulate JAWS cursor's Up/ Down movement behavior. Even then, objects are navigated separately, unlike JAWS which truly navigates line by line. @JamminJerry @NVAccess

@JamminJerry Well, glad I'm not the only one. I was messing with it last night as a result of this conversation and was very perplexed because I'd never paid attention to that asspect before, just always switched to the mode(s) I needed.
@JamminJerry The point here is that you can move with the JAWS cursor with normal navigation commands. With Object Review, instead of just needing to know two commands to switch between the JAWS and PC cursors, you need to know an entirely different set of keystrokes just to work with it at all, even more if you need to switch review modes and when should you do so? which adds yet another level of complexity. So it's unnecessarily complicated. The level of controll is nice, but no good if you can't explain to most people how to use it. Having said all that, one of the main reasons I switched to using NVDA as my primary SR is because the JAWS cursor often doesn't read anything or gets stuck and that has never really been addressed. So while more complicated, it is definitely more reliable.

@GamingWithEars but one thin you do have to givbe NVDA, you don't get blank blank blank blank blank all the time, like you do with the jaws curser. something that has happened for years and years, and to this day, they still haven't fixed it. what sucks is you can't just do a restart of jfw to fix it. oh no, you have to restart your whole machine just to fix it.
@GamingWithEars the ones I have tried for NVDA aren't bad, but I now use a program called basilisk. I think it was or is based off one of the ones that anitially started out as an NVDA addon. now it is a stand alone program that you can use even with jfw if you want.
@EdenLinnea @JamminJerry If you know anyone somewhat familiar with VoiceOver on Mac AND NVDA, I'd be happy to draft a "Switching from VoiceOver to NVDA" guide similar to the Jaws one. I'm happy to write it, I just don't know what commands are different (I'm assuming quite a bit since the whole OS is different, but I'd rather not make it entirely a "Switching from Mac to PC with the keyboard" guide - that could be a whole book!)

@cachondo @JamminJerry As an NVDA user initially, trying to wrap my head around JAWS cursors was equally confusing, and when I ran into the seeming that JAWS did not have an equivalent to object navigation I promptly thought, how does anyone use it with finicky software then? It does, actually. The touch cursor. Which brings the other parallel. it's like Mac VoiceOver! Mac VO is *always* in object navigation mode, and interacting is equivalent to traversal.

If you charge for the training material, there's an incentive not to provide free content that would replace it, even though such free content is necessary for the vast majority of NVDA users.
@miki @JamminJerry First and formost we have an objective to provide NVDA for free. To do that we do need income. While sales of the training material is not the bulk of our income, it helps meet that primary goal. But it doesn't disincentivize us from providing free material. The entire Quick Start Guide (Section 2 of the User Guide) was written in 2022, well after the paid training. So we definitely do still develop and distribute free material
@miki @JamminJerry An argument could be made for parts of basic training such as object navigation discussed in this thread - but in fact, if there is any of the paid material for which an argument could not be made that it would be worthwhile people knowing.... then it probably wouldn't be worth charging for in the first place (and I do hope that is not the case)!

On a essayé, avec Karine Abiven, de réunir des collègues de différentes matières (et de différents pays!) pour décrypter ce qui est devenu un récit de société contemporain - et qui a, comme tout récit de société à la mode, a ses intérêts et ses points aveugles
Le récit de transfuge de classe est devenu un de ces récits "disponibles" qui circulent, qui influencent la manière dont nous percevons notre entourage, dont nous nous définissons, dont nous essayons de donner une cohérence aux évènements.
Ces récits comportent un intérêt certain : nous offrir des concepts et des catégories narratives dans lesquels nous pouvons nous reconnaître. Mais ils peuvent aussi orienter voire biaiser notre regard et notre discours sans que nous nous en rendions compte… On décrypte ça dans ce numéro!
Par exemple, j'ai écrit un article sur le décalage entre la mobilités sociale réelle et la mobilité sociale majoritairement représentée dans les récits de transfuge que nous connaissons - très souvent exceptionnelle, ascendante, intellectuelle journals.openedition.org/conte…
