CIDRAP Minnesota: For nearly 80 years, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) was respected around the world for its authoritative, evidence-based leadership in public health.

But the CDC’s stunning reversal Wednesday—stating on its website that “studies have not ruled out the possibility that infant vaccines cause autism”—shows the agency can no longer be trusted, multiple doctors and public health advocates told CIDRAP News.

"New US rules suggest countries with diversity policies are infringing human rights."

The absurdity of this statement is palpable, but the threat is real. Dear U.K., it is time to dissolve the 'Special Relationship' with the United States.

At the next election, unless you have a taste for complicity, the minimum requirement is the total rejection of the Conservative, Labour, and Reform parties. These entities will align with American caprice for their own venal desires.

We should draw a line: reject those who would import this culture war, and elect only those committed to defending the Human Rights Act 1998.

In Scotland, this necessitates returning the SNP or, preferably, The Scottish Greens. Crucially, it requires that the Unexplained Wealth Order (UWO) regarding Donald Trump—long advocated for by The Greens—is finally progressed by the Scottish Government. Nothing would deflate Trump’s ego faster than his golf courses at Turnberry and Menie being subject to seizure under the Criminal Finances Act, resulting in nationalisation and his designation as persona non grata.

Be under no illusion: the erosion of rights is contagious. Religious groups in Scotland are already pushing against the Abortion Services (Safe Access Zones) (Scotland) Act, seeking to roll back reproductive rights. But here is the paradox: if we are to adopt the Trumpian approach to dismantling 'identity politics,' the first casualty must be the Equality Act 2010.
If the protections for 'Protected Characteristics' are removed to satisfy the anti-woke brigade, the legal shield for religion and belief falls with them.

Sauce for the goose.

If you demand the repeal of legislation that prevents you from harassing women outside clinics under the guise of 'sanctity of life,' you effectively dismantle the protections that stop atheists from standing outside your church on a Sunday, mocking your belief in 'space fairies.' You cannot strip rights from women and minorities without exposing yourself to the same open season.

Are you actually that game?

Hi everyone!
We are glad you are excited for the quote posts! They will come eventually but right now we (and I mean mostly Conny) are in the process of rewriting the timeline to be able to accommodate for quotes, it might take some time. We are only a few people who do this in our free time. We can't give you a time estimate but of course we also want it out as soon as possible. Stay tuned!

If you are ever looking for an interesting alternative to alcohol, I throughly recommend the Swish brand of mocktails. They are delicious and some taste so close to the “real” thing. I’m not paid to promote them, sadly, just wanted to share the recommendation for anyone wanting to provide sober Christmas options swishcocktails.com/collections…

On my iPhone,, I recently set up the official medication reminders feature in the Health app. It's surprisingly helpful. The only problem is that I accidentally hit "add time" a second time, so now I'm reminded at 7:00 and 7:05 to take the same medication. So far, I haven't found a way of removing the (accidental) 7:05 reminder. Does anyone happen to know how I can do this? Again, this is in Health, not normal reminders.

gosh so much work to do. Today's RFC writing time. I cannot say what the RFC is for here of course, but work's keeping me so swamped I really don't have time to check masto much. Maybe later in the afternoon.
Still, a huge thanks to those reposting content. I know some are not polished as I'd like, but I appreciate your patience and walking through Cadence.

So this is very interesting to me. For those who don't know, these use some new models Microsoft rolled out late last year based on LLMs, very similar to what companies like Eleven Labs have been doing. While voices like these can be good for reading long documents, they're fundamentally unsuitable for typical screen reader use as they change their inflection constantly, in some cases drastically, depending on what is being spoken. A lot of this can come down to how the models are trained, but considering Microsoft had other versions of the same voices that would've done better I'm surprised they didn't just use those.

These HD voices would be much more useful in apps like Edge and Word in conjunction with the read aloud functionality, but I'm not sure if they have been implemented there yet. It's still very cool to see it used in a screen reader like this, and hopefully improvements will be made, but I'm not sure the architecture they're using is going to hold up without modification.

Self-hosted Delta Chat?

I've been thinking more about the hurtle of getting friends and family to use federated/self-hosted services. One of the issues to onboarding is people not "getting" the idea of picking an instance. This has led, in part, to "default" instances, like mastadon.social, that grow so large it almost defeates the idea.

I've been thinking that I really wish #DeltaChat had a web client. I have had a MUCH more difficult time getting folks to try that out than even #fediverse SNS. But I was thinking how the heck are you going to pull that off without @delta having to host the overhead for a robust web client and possibly host a gigantic server system that has to grow exponentially to keep everyone's email from all the possible email providers, really defeating the goal of their project.

This morning, I thought of a possible solution to both problems. What if you have a built-in transfer requirement. So you start with a default, say pleb.joinmastodon.org or noob.delta.chat and after a certain time (3 months or something) you have to either transfer to a new instance, including hosting your own client for in browser decryption web access to your encrypted mail chats or your account (in the case of #mastodon) or web client access (in the case of Delta Chat) is shut off.

Do you think this could work?

@delta_chat

in reply to Fu

it's a neat idea to postpone server choice until later, and onboard with some default.

#deltachat apps are currently learning to use multiple addresses at once ("multi-transport"), along with cryptographic hardening against evil server operators. The goal is to provide multi-server onboarding by default, and to automate server migrations (although for a while there will be an advanced settings interface where it's manually managed). You'd be onboarding "to the network" :)

--------------------

Welcome to StroongeCast Clips,

a selection of highlights from various episodes.

We're gonna start with episode seven, Jake and

Alice.

- Well, my friends are really baffled by it.

They're like, "How does your dad get around the

house?"

Or like, "How does he play piano?"

Or like, "Does he do daily life activities?"

- What do you say?

What do you tell them?

- Um, usually he's like,

well, he like feels with his hands

or he just gets used to it

'cause everything is in the same place most of

the time.

- For me, all of my friends,

none of them know how smart you actually are

with computers and stuff,

how you use your phone or whatever.

And I always try to describe voiceover to them,

but they never understand it.

So- - You've gotta show it.

- Oh, you're saying- - Yeah, I could show them.

But yeah, they just think you sit at home like a

sod

and just do nothing, I think.

(all laughing)

- They don't understand how you do anything.

- Wow.

- I'm the sodding dad.

I do nothing. - That's hilarious.

- That's what they think. - Priceless.

- They're like, "How does he type?"

Especially with the piano stuff.

They're like, "Oh."

- Episode 20.

- Synesthesia.

What was, maybe you should share the one with the

piano key.

- Oh gosh.

That's kind of a bit weird.

People think I'm quite bizarre.

- Well, when we read some of the others out,

I don't think you'll be the only one.

- There is one note on the piano,

which is F4 on the piano, right?

So C4 is the middle of the piano for a lot of

people.

So F4, which is the F above C4,

is the feeling of a boob.

Yup.

In the palm.

I have no answer for why that might be.

So if you're drinking tea and you take it this,

I apologize.

But I can't tell you why that is the case.

I just know it is the case.

Episode 44.

- Communication is key.

- I was so claustrophobic by the end of those

two or three weeks,

because I had to be guided everywhere.

All I wanted to do at the end of the day

was go to the hotel room or sit on a balcony.

And at the time I was single,

so I just go on a dating site.

And that sounds really sad, doesn't it?

But that's all I wanted to do,

because it was the only time I could get some

head space

where I was sort of in my own head

and I didn't have to think about other people

or other people taking me or where am I.

Because I think what people don't realize

is about being blind,

that your adrenaline circuits are on maximum

firing

all the time.

So although you're guiding Andre, Kirsten,

and that's sort of, I can't think of the right

word,

but that's an activity that you're undertaking

and it's you're keeping an eye on him.

Andre's also guiding himself

'cause he's avoiding stuff

and getting out of the way of things

and listening constantly.

So he's probably knackered after a day of that,

just as you're knackered from guiding him.

- Episode 47.

- Cruise cast.

And then you're gonna make me say

what happened next, aren't you?

- Unfortunately, because it was one of the most

scary things

that's ever happened to all of us, I think.

So whilst Jake had gone, he ran.

Obviously it was a very stressful moment

because we were thinking,

well, what if he's lost all of his stuff

if someone's taken everything?

And, or what if he doesn't get back in time?

Like, what do we do?

And we were at this bus stop, sat there,

and I started to feel a bit strange,

just queasy.

And I thought, I feel sick because it's the

stress,

the anxiety of, oh my gosh, what do we do?

And then my ears started to sort of cloud over

and I couldn't hear anything.

And I was feeling really, really dodgy.

And I said to you, I feel like I'm gonna pass out.

I've never passed out in my life, never fainted,

nothing.

So I don't really know, but I just, I felt really

awful.

And I sat down on the floor because the bus stop

was just one of those tiny little, not even a

bench thing.

I sat on the floor and I could feel my whole head

just completely go fuzzy.

I couldn't hear anything.

And then the next thing I remember was a man crouched

down

in front of me saying, are you okay?

Are you okay?

- Yeah, he did.

- And I sat up and went, I think I just fainted.

And he went, oh, okay.

- Episode 60.

- Do you believe in smacking?

When Jake was a toddler, I used to take him to

this group

and there was a mum there with her,

I think it was a little boy.

And I think he'd gone and hit another child or

something.

I mean, he would have been like 18 months to two

years old.

I mean, we're talking little.

He really, he didn't have many words at all.

And he'd hit another child, I think, not hard,

just in the way that they do.

And she went up to him and smacked him on the

hand

and said, we don't smack.

- That's okay, right, sure.

- And I just remember being so baffled by that.

How can you say to a toddler that, I mean, any

child,

but to a very young child who barely even

understands

the world yet, I'm gonna do something to you,

but you're not allowed to do it to anybody else.

- Thanks for listening.

And we will catch you next week.

- Bye.

Well, maybe we need to be more clear what we are trying to do: #deltachat apps are a cross-platform private messenger suite, that aims to provide a consistent UX/UI for users with lots of experience using WhatsApp and Signal.

Telegram has good fast UX but is hardly a private messenger (it has a central cleartext database of everyone and everything).

Matrix and XMPP are well-esteemed fellows in federated messaging, but so far didn't grow a WA/Signal-level cross-platform messaging UX.

YMMV

in reply to Delta Chat (39c3)

I think the killer features are simple:

1. Actually decentralised. Not tomorrow, not theorical, not a work-in-progress. Decentralised: NOW.

2. WebXDC apps taking advantage of that decentralisation are going to be one of its biggest pulls. PixelSocial can entirely overtake local neighbourhood/family FB groups for example once is a bit more feature-complete.

3. Everything's encrypted without annoying you like Matrix

4. UI feels famiiliar like old pre-FB-purchase Whatsapp. Smaller learning curves or no curves at alll, are awesome.

@maikel and you got the extra recommendation/warning running:

`scripts/cmdeploy dns`

that is also listed in that docs? it is hard to understand if you just post some image in social media without much context, it is better to use support.delta.chat or create a github issue to document in detail all the issues you found while following the docs as I did here:
