today is officially *THREE* weeks until the submission deadline for Good Internet magazine!
Good Internet launches in May 2025. it's a volunteer-run, not-for-profit print and digital quarterly magazine for personal website owners and those interested in using the internet as a means of self-expression, art, and recreation.
🔍 we're looking for 1,500-4,000 word articles about anything related to that!
you could write about:
* #internet history
* personal #websites
* #accessibility on the #indieweb
* finding inspiration for a #blog
* #webdesign trends
* running from the #enshittification of the #web
* lessons or post-mortems from #webdev projects
* news or overviews of #opensource projects
if it relates to hobbies on "this side of the web," whether you call it the #smallweb or indieweb, we probably want to run it!
you can have your article as low-media (meaning only text and images) or interactive, where you code an entire webpage to help tell your story.
if you're interested in learning more, you can sign up for our email list for when we launch or you can check the submission guidelines @ goodinternetmagazine.com!
(please boost if you can! ❤)

Ugh, I can't seem to use the Discord inbox at all under Linux. That's going to be kind of a big deal.
Filed this a while back but was hoping it was either a Chromium or Electron issue. Seems to happen in Firefox as well.
Going to still try daily driving Linux this week but if I can't use the Discord inbox then that's going to hurt. Real shame Element/Matrix isn't a compelling accessible alternative yet.

@Tutanota Hey - I tried to sign up, but failed, I assume because I'm using a VPN.
For a security focused email provider, this is off putting. It also makes me worried that even if I manage to sign up, future access may require to have my VPN off, which is not going to happen.
Is this something you are aware of? Any plans to address it? Searching a bit brings up a lot of results discussing this issue, but no FAQ from you.

So there's some tech bro bed company called Eight Sleep. Like, a $2,000 bed with temperature controls and shit
Thing is, it has a backdoor in the firmware allowing Eight Sleep's engineers to *SSH into your fucking bed and run arbitrary code*

They can detect when there are 2 people sleeping in the bed instead of 1
They can know when it’s night, and no people are in the bed"

Fragile #Masculinity is Never Ever Satisfied
And as @adamconover eloquently explains, the “manly” antics of the tech bro oligarch class really aren't fooling anyone.
Performative masculinity—particularly its extreme form of fragile masculinity which inevitably leads to toxic masculinity—is tearing my country apart right now. Clearly we must to find healthier ways to reach and help young men.
At the same time…I kinda just want to deconstruct gender entirely? 😅
It is very hard to accept, but it is no longer safe to move EU governments & societies to US clouds. Not only is it dangerous to do so, it is also likely flat out illegal in the near future. We're trading convenience for utter dependence on a mad king. It should stop.

I've finally done it. I've written an email to businesses I buy from that are still on #Shopify. This will be going out to them all.
If you have a monthly subscription to any product that's not through Amazon, it's probably hosted by Shopify. Dog food That's Shopify. Coffee? You guessed it. Toilet paper? Yep.
Will you join me in writing to small businesses and asking them to consider switching hosts?
I've shared my email template below, though yours may obviously be different.
Hi WGAC team,
First, I want to tell you I love your toilet paper. And I hope to continue buying it.
But here's the thing… I don't know if you're aware of what Shopify senior management team has been up to. They've aligned themselves with fascists.

As a fellow small business owner with a Shopify store, I've made the commitment to move my business away from Shopify. It's going to take me hundreds of hours to redevelop entire site and recreate all my integrations. But it's the right thing to do.
When someone shows you who they are, believe them. Shopify's senior management team has made it clear who they are. I believe them.

Sunday surprise!
A friend of mine found an old email from me dated January 17 1997
Attached in this mail was the #httpget 0.2 source code. Previously believed to be lost, now the oldest httpget code I have.
165 lines long. 110 lines code, 30 lines comments, 25 blank lines.
This morning, #curl was 174,854 lines of code, not counting blank lines but comments.
1248 times larger over 28 years.
