A new and improved BeSTspeech NVDA addon has just been released. This doesn't include the custom voices yet, however it is pretty good for a first release. oooh. Another benefit to this awesome project: Now we could use the Sonic library to add a "rate boost" feature directly that would not elongate consonants at the faster rates, like BestSpeech at 100 currently does, that will be an awesome time.
@mcourcel @alexchapman This will be fixed probably once NVDA 2025.1 comes, because that will have trimming of speech so will bring it back to that level of responsiveness.
@mcourcel @alexchapman there's for sure a lesss snappier response with the wrapper, like when I hold down the tab key at the desktop I no longer here the start fragments of my taskbar / desktop rapidly getting spoken, but I also think this trade-off was needed to make that DLL a bit more thread-safe. I could have introduced a slight pause probably to negate it a bit but it wouldn't have solved all the issues on web of it crashing from symbols, so really the best outcome. :)
@alexchapman wow this is so, so, superb. A wrapper that solved the problem of not having Nvwave compatibility, OMG, so so amazing. I for sure knew he could do something cooler with it :D what a legend.
I just installed it, is it like an update from the previous ones or not, as it seemed to install as its own thing rather than as an update to the previous one, so now I think I have 2 Bestspeeches lol

lol sort of, it's more like translating a bible but if it were written in an ancient language where words existed in such simpler forms that the newer language has potential to lose nuance because it's now far more complex. 16 to 32 bit would be one thing, but also moving from Windows 9X ways of doing things to how current Windows-NT systems work, would be the other challenge to it. In short, only a huge miracle or advanced AI that knows how to code and painfully pull apart disassembled byte-code and work to reconstruct from scratch could do it. This is why just having a wrapper and hook that can let us pull the sound fragments from memory directly is such a huge deal, there's a very little chance that any future versions of the Sourcecode even exist for that synth because of iressponsible acquisitions and archival, and the only versions we have that are sort of 32-bit are the Pocket-PC Windows CE copies, which unfortunately still suffer from problem #2 (and 32-bit Intel does not at all work like 32-bit ARM does, so really, still both problems.)
@kev Maybe that could happen, or maybe not, maybe some part. I mean, browsing through technology from 2 to 4 decades ago wants to feel nostalgia despite I was born on November 20th, 2000, yeah, just going through the end of the second millennium, at the end of the 20th century... If hardware TTS systems still exist, or the entire software ecosystem replaced the hardware...
@TomGrant91 no squealing on bullets, thankfully, either. It really fixes all the major issues and makes it a solid synth (though I myself probably won't use it as such until speech rate can be made to go as fast as on the version found within BrailleNotes)
Fantastic! I was more a rate 8 user though because I was new to fast speech rates. Rate 100 curently is OK for me, but yeah would be cool when it's improved. Will give bullets a try. How about the signal enhancemants on realtec is there still a delay? I turned them off because it makes the addon more responsive.

Ugh, I can't seem to use the Discord inbox at all under Linux. That's going to be kind of a big deal.
Filed this a while back but was hoping it was either a Chromium or Electron issue. Seems to happen in Firefox as well.
Going to still try daily driving Linux this week but if I can't use the Discord inbox then that's going to hurt. Real shame Element/Matrix isn't a compelling accessible alternative yet.

@Tutanota Hey - I tried to sign up, but failed, I assume because I'm using a VPN.
For a security focused email provider, this is off putting. It also makes me worried that even if I manage to sign up, future access may require to have my VPN off, which is not going to happen.
Is this something you are aware of? Any plans to address it? Searching a bit brings up a lot of results discussing this issue, but no FAQ from you.
Thanks for your feedback. Unfortunately, spammers try to sign up with vpns/Tor so we need to block these occasionally. You can try with a different connection. We also do not log IP addresses.

Since I found a working and screen reader-accessible PoW-based captcha which is super easy to implement on a site and people have been telling me to switch from RecaptchaV3 for years, I had a reason to write Verity, a tiny and super fast server for Altcha. proof of work, hang on, so the same tech blockchains use? how would that stop bots though? not that I care about captchas at all, they could go burn in a fire for all I care, but for those who do...why is this useful? I hate hcaptcha, rcaptcha and so on with a passion, which makes me also hate all captchas, but if this one is actually better and protects against some kind of bots, that's good I suppose
If you host websites or services, captchas are there to stop spam. The problem is that they are not user friendly at all. PoW-based captchas do the work for you, all you need to do is check a checkbox and wait until your pc finds the solution. Depending on the complexity, which usually rises the more requests you send, in a normal case the solution is found in less than two seconds. There's a demo captcha on altcha.org
This is awesome! Nice work. Would it be possible to add a section to the documentation explaining how to integrate Verity with the Altcha client? I ask because I guess this information would be available on the client documentation as weel, I just didn't look deep enough.
Thank you very much for your kind words. Yes, client integration is available at altcha.org/captcha/, which is why I decided to not reiterate what's there already, including integration examples for popular frameworks.
For example, the non-floating UI integration goes like this:
A developer adds the Altcha JS module, either via import or a script tag.
A simple altcha-widget tag defines where the captcha is in a form, as well as defines properties, e.g. where to reach the Altcha server. This is the challenge URL (/api/v1/challenge) in the case of Verity.
A user checks a checkbox to initiate acquiring a challenge.
The Altcha JS module fetches a challenge from the challenge URL and begins working on the challenge. When a solution is found, the checkbox is checked, screen readers are notified. The form can be submitted now.
Upon form submission, the server checks if the form contains an altcha field, which is defined by the Altcha module. The name of the field can be changed. If yes, the server sends a post request to the verify endpoint of the Altcha server (/api/v1/challenge/verify in the case of Verity).
If the verification is successful (code 200 and the message is OK in the case of Verity), the submission is valid. If the altcha field is empty or verification is invalid, the submission should be rejected.
This is very similar to the way Recaptcha works, so quite often creating a drop-in replacement is straight forward.

@adbenitez The problem with many #Signal alternatives is that they don't provide Windows / MacOS / Linux desktop versions. Hard as it may be to believe if you are under 30, not everyone walks around with a phone glued to their hip or in their hand all day. Personally, I have NEVER used a messaging client (other than SMS) on a phone, I use my desktop computer for everything, partly because the screens on phone are just too damn hard to read if you don't have perfect vision, but also I just have a terrible time using a modern "smart" phone in general.

@adbenitez Well the thing I don't care for with #DeltaChat is that it uses email as its underlying transport mechanism. That, to me, just seems like the wrong approach for a chat client, for a number of reasons. If you can run your own email server it might be fine, but I have no desire to do that.
