today is officially *THREE* weeks until the submission deadline for Good Internet magazine!

Good Internet launches in May 2025. it's a volunteer-run, not-for-profit print and digital quarterly magazine for personal website owners and those interested in using the internet as a means of self-expression, art, and recreation.

🔍 we're looking for 1,500-4,000 word articles about anything related to that!

you could write about:

* #internet history
* personal #websites
* #accessibility on the #indieweb
* finding inspiration for a #blog
* #webdesign trends
* running from the #enshittification of the #web
* lessons or post-mortems from #webdev projects
* news or overviews of #opensource projects

if it relates to hobbies on "this side of the web," whether you call it the #smallweb or indieweb, we probably want to run it!

you can have your article as low-media (meaning only text and images) or interactive, where you code an entire webpage to help tell your story.

if you're interested in learning more, you can sign up for our email list for when we launch or you can check the submission guidelines @ goodinternetmagazine.com!

(please boost if you can! ❤)

@matrix has gone from $0 to $561K in recurring revenue in just 2 years. But our expenses run $1.2M/yr.

We've burned through reserves and are at a crossroads.

It's the classic FOSS funding problem: use and adoption are at an all-time high, wealthy companies and countries use it, and secure decentralized comms have never been more important. And yet we can't pay our bills.

YOU have a role to play in shaping what comes next: matrix.org/blog/2025/02/crossr…

Written by an 18 yrs. old:

“I wish I was around when people had blogs or even myspace. This era was deeply personal and creative. Most writing on the internet was individual, not written in search of “SEO” or profit but driven by the need and want of people to share knowledge–pure curiosity.”

Great blog post re: #IndieWeb #OldWeb

my hope is that in this new surge of renewed interest for having your own damn blog on your own damn website, this finally gives #indieweb the push for adoption that it’s been sorely needing

it’d also be really funny to me if the indieweb community got totally overrun by socialist therian plural furries with a taste for anti-racist action

"Apple made a fateful decision that mobile-phone internet should be app-centric, not browser/website centric. Then Android copied their mistake."

Many interesting things in this article, but this is one particular gripe I have about today's Internet. I will go to so much unnecessary trouble just to avoid using somebody's app.

Back in March I scanned through a terabyte of old geocities sites with the goal of finding *all* the 88x31 buttons. Recently, I realised that I didn't scan for all the geocities subsites (e.g. de.geocities.com, br.geocities.com, etc). I've fixed that mistake and have added 1.8k new 88x31 buttons from Germany, Brazil, Hong Kong and many more international sites. Feel free to explore the updated site or download the zipped button archive (31k buttons, 156MB)

Anyone thinking about starting their own blog this year?

I thought I'd share my DigitalOcean referral link that gives you $200 to spend within the first 60 days:

If you have a website with neo cities, just know that the creator actually likes AI, and will add it again based on this post alone. Moratorium on freaking out about AI kyledrake.com/writings/ai

One alternative I've found is nekoweb.org/

this post @capjamesg wrote is almost plucked right out of my brain; been having these thoughts for a while, and i'm so glad to share it. thank you for writing it, james!

"To have a personal website is, presently, an act of rebellion. It is a statement. You are saying: I want to define my experience on the web. I'll let you in on an open secret: Big tech companies aren't the only ones who get to decide how we share ideas on the web. The web is yours. You can put up a website where you share whatever it is that you want to share with others."

Really wish there was a PikaPods but for #YunoHost because PikaPods is fantastic, and I directed so many people to them in the past couple of days. It is a fully managed service that lets you pick #OpenSource stuff to host on your own pod, and you basically pay like $1 but monthly! This is how I'm trying stuff like Audiobookshelf and others. You pick servers locations and sizes and stuff but all the hosting is done for you! pikapods.com/apps #Tech #IndieWeb

If you browse a lot of #smallweb #indieweb blogs and websites, you should add the StreetPass extenstion to your web browser. It finds #fediverse accounts associated with the blogs you read, and allows you to view the accounts and follow them if you want.

How does it work?

1. Mastodon users verify themselves by adding a custom link to their personal site.
2. StreetPass lets you know when you've found one of these links, and adds them to your StreetPass list.
3. Browse the web as usual. StreetPass will build a list of Mastodon users made up of the websites you go to.

##StreetPass is made possible by open web identity verification standards and is 100% open source!

Need help finding or piecing together a software that does a thing.

Dadboss informed me of something our company used to use way back, Yahoo Groups, as an email newsgroup.

Apparently, our members were really into it because they didn’t have to go anywhere or log in to anything.

They received an email and simply hit reply and it added their response.

He wants something like that crossed with Substack.

Sounds like maybe something #Indieweb protocol can do?

I don’t know; I’m not a developer, but I’m pretty good at piecing things together out of existing technology.

And maybe it already exists!

If someone could point me in the right direction I would be very grateful.

My self-hosted, #indieweb #Twitter archive is up. Thanks to @eleventy and the excellent work done on the Tweeback project: github.com/tweetback/tweetback

You can find mine here: twitter.marcozehe.de

Also, if you read German, my German language archive is here: twitter.marcos-leben.de

how much contact have y'all had with #indieweb folks? You seem pretty aligned. Indieweb.org is all about that self hosted life.

I turned off cross-posting from and to Twitter now. It just doesn’t work for me. It feels weird to see RTs here and Mastodon handles on Twitter.

Mastodon is not a cheap copy of the hellsite, but a platform of its own with a healthy, respectful community. 💚

I will, however, microblog on my own personal website more and syndicate the posts to different platforms. #IndieWeb FTW! I wrote about it here:

#introduction time 👋

- I'm a writer, programmer and researcher based in Melbourne.

- My day job involves a lot(!) of #dataviz and my main tools of the trade are #d3js, #python, #R and #GIS software. But I also play around with p5.js and SQL on occasion.

- Outside of that, I'm looking to learn more about digital librarianship and curatorship, digital humanities, early internet and the #indieweb, live art coding, generative art and cool web design.

- I was also a #music journalist for a few years and I'm a classically trained singer, so I'm always keen to hear new recs
