Resources #Mastodon instances need to run are not free. If we users want to keep the network the way it is, we need to take responsibility for that.

That's why I did my humble part today and made a contribution to my instance: liberapay.com/FLOSS.social
Thank you, @downey, for running it! It's a reliable instance with a friendly community which I enjoy using every day.

Great to see that the previous goal (which I saw not that long ago: 2 weeks or so?) was not only reached, but surpassed! And a new proper goal (considering the extra load) was set :awesome: 🥳

As the other Fedi-Admins do, @downey already puts the mental work, his time & nerves into running things (THANKS!!!), so let's ensure WE at least cover the monetary part (including the coffee input plus a "bite") to keep the ship afloat!

Meta has created a tool that lets you check if they’ve scraped your phone number or email address from someone else’s contacts list.

It also lets you remove and block your phone number or email from their database. It’s hidden away in one of their help articles:

facebook.com/contacts/removal

Mental conflict: To check whether they got my PII scraped, I have to visit THEIR site and enter it? Given the history of that … err … institution (?), I shall believe that they not just save the data I entered and market/abuse it? Because, if they didn't have it yet they'd have it then. Verified by its owner.

That's the mess with opt-out and proprietary services: you can never be sure. (Not only) for data collection, opt-in should be mandatory.

:opensource: The #AllThingsOpen #opensource conference is this coming Tuesday & Wednesday in the US.

:covid19: They are taking some but not all of the necessary #COVID19 precautions from #PHPledge so I will be attending the free-of-charge virtual option, which you may want to do as well.

The stream covers some event content via their proprietary SaaS provider. You do have to register so your (real or fake) personal data can be monetized by sponsors.

🐘 Mastodon Tip ✨

Mastodon doesn't always pull in up-to-date profile info.

If you see a blank avatar, or if you just want to make sure you're seeing someone's up-to-date profile info, do this:

1) Right-click on their avatar or username.
2) Choose "copy link address" or similar.
3) Click in the Mastodon search box and paste the link.
4) Press enter.
5) If there's a new avatar or display name, it will update when the profile appears in the search results.

Do something awesome in November! Join the LibreOffice community, learn new things, and have fun on the way: blog.documentfoundation.org/bl…

It always bothered me that I can't set different sounds for different notifications. Like let's take Discord, because they recently added a thing where a new message in the currently focused channel makes a different noise.
But let's see.
DM? Standard bloop.
Message in another server? Standard bloop.
Mention in another server? Standard bloop.
This quickly overwhelms you because they all make the exact same noise. If they made different ones, you'd immediately know "Oh! This is a dm|! This is more important!".
Let's try again. Mastodon.
Favorite? Standard bloop.
Mention? Standard bloop.
Boost? Standard bloop.
Follow? Standard bloop.
Pinafore? Wait... Pinafore has nothing? No sound at all? Oh boy.
I tend to go crazy with these. I love sound, and I like to know what's going on, so my computer makes a ton of them. They're all very quiet and short as to not be annoying, but if something's happening, there's usually a noise to go with it. We can make subtle noises, too. Ones that don't get in the way and stick to the background unless you specifically listen for them.
But they're helpful! If you're making an app and it has different kinds of notifications, please consider giving them slightly different sounds so we know what's going on without having to look for it. That way we can decide whether we want to deal with something or not immediately without taking too much focus away from other things. And hey, if people with sight enjoy their little animations, then you can be sure that us non-sighted folk love a little bit of earcandy to our interfaces as well! This is much more controversial, and people won't agree with me, but that's OK. Not everyone wants fancy animations either. That's totally fine. But we're very, very good at picking up patterns, especially in sound. And thus I think it's undervalued quite a lot and we could make it a lot more useful than it is. Just a thought.

Can I ask a favour?

I'm really grateful to be recommended as a follow, but can you also mention the website (fedi.tips) when you do so?

At the moment getting a lot of questions which are answered on the site, and it's difficult to keep up with every question. I'm happy to keep answering, but also afraid I'll miss someone's question.

If they know about the site from the beginning, they will have a chance of finding the answers themselves if I do miss their question.

Thanks 🙏

in reply to ElOssiPolar

It's a crossover AU fanfiction that no one did not ask for. It featured the canon characters from Zatch Bell, The Duke of Death and His Maid, and other anime/manga and video game series that aren't tagged. The links to the chapters are below this tweet.

Because there's no obvious onboarding nor page dedicated to accessibility features, notice that this is how you put alt text into images on Mastodon. I'm not sure what the upper limit is on characters per img. Use the "Edit" in the upper right-hand side of an uploaded image in a draft toot to access this area. #a11y #SciComm

The #TwitterMigration needs to spread out to other #Fediverse platforms and respective servers. Those receiving the bulk of registrations are going to be stretched out [time and financially].

I think this list/site is a good landing page for the #Fediverse - fediverse.info/explore/project…

If I may suggest, re: project list, maybe using familiar words as such “Twitter-like”, “FB-like”, “Goodreads-like” can be helpful too, instead of just “microblogging” (which more likely only us techies understand).

A reminder that #Mastodon doesn’t make billions from advertising. Servers are supported by individuals & orgs, hosts themselves & donations.

If like me, you’re part of the #stampede arriving from the #Twittermigration, consider adding your support to show @Gargron & others we appreciate their effort & time: patreon.com/mastodon

Dear #screenwriters of the #fediverse! Welcome! During this #twittermigration I have made a quick and dirty little Google Form that fills out a spreadsheet to help you find other screenwriters! I will keep this in line as much as possible, but I do get busy...

Form: forms.gle/gw2nAyYzYNjfFHt38

Sheet: docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d…

If anyone has any issues with either let me know and I'll take a look at it!

I'm seeing lots of interest in spinning up Mastodon servers, and that's awesome!

Why not learn from the pros? @aurynn has written an excellent series of posts on cloudisland.nz's architecture:

Please remember to add text descriptions to images, audio and video posts, to make them accessible to blind and deaf users.

You can add descriptions to an attachment by clicking "Edit" on the website, or by typing directly on top of the attachment on the official app.

Describe both visuals and audio (if present).

Also, use CamelCase on hashtags (where the first letter of every word is capitalised). This allows screen readers to say each word aloud correctly.
