Mental conflict: To check whether they got my PII scraped, I have to visit THEIR site and enter it? Given the history of that … err … institution (?), I shall believe that they not just save the data I entered and market/abuse it? Because, if they didn't have it yet they'd have it then. Verified by its owner.

If you see a blank avatar, or if you just want to make sure you're seeing someone's up-to-date profile info, do this:
1) Right-click on their avatar or username. 2) Choose "copy link address" or similar. 3) Click in the Mastodon search box and paste the link. 4) Press enter. 5) If there's a new avatar or display name, it will update when the profile appears in the search results.

It always bothered me that I can't set different sounds for different notifications. Like let's take Discord, because they recently added a thing where a new message in the currently focused channel makes a different noise. But let's see. DM? Standard bloop. Message in another server? Standard bloop. Mention in another server? Standard bloop. This quickly overwhelms you because they all make the exact same noise. If they made different ones, you'd immediately know "Oh! This is a dm|! This is more important!". Let's try again. Mastodon. Favorite? Standard bloop. Mention? Standard bloop. Boost? Standard bloop. Follow? Standard bloop. Pinafore? Wait... Pinafore has nothing? No sound at all? Oh boy. I tend to go crazy with these. I love sound, and I like to know what's going on, so my computer makes a ton of them. They're all very quiet and short as to not be annoying, but if something's happening, there's usually a noise to go with it. We can make subtle noises, too. Ones that don't get in the way and stick to the background unless you specifically listen for them. But they're helpful! If you're making an app and it has different kinds of notifications, please consider giving them slightly different sounds so we know what's going on without having to look for it. That way we can decide whether we want to deal with something or not immediately without taking too much focus away from other things. And hey, if people with sight enjoy their little animations, then you can be sure that us non-sighted folk love a little bit of earcandy to our interfaces as well! This is much more controversial, and people won't agree with me, but that's OK. Not everyone wants fancy animations either. That's totally fine. But we're very, very good at picking up patterns, especially in sound. And thus I think it's undervalued quite a lot and we could make it a lot more useful than it is. Just a thought.
Yes. I agree with all of this. Especially on the discord part of it. There's a lot that goes on in discord chats and with them all making the same sound, it's hard to tell exactly what you got, unless you're actively looking for it. Not only that, but, as you said, there's no priority with the same sound for everything. You can't actively prioritize DM's or servers or, like, anything. So yes, all of that

yeah, that one appears to just change the single sound, rather than assign sounds to different notification types. Same bits of code to mess with though.
I absolutely agree, it would make my discord experience much better if I could distinguish a random ping from an important mention instantly just by sound.
I think I don't have any application with different sounds for actions. That's a real problem. The worst, on a website, there is some actions announced by a voice ! Yeah, great, it's important when coming. But, when we have the most important need of a synthesis voice on this gaming site, that's a standard bloop. And no accessibility. @talon
@kujiu yeah. This is why I say, I think we're undervaluing sounds by a great deal. Not just to people with disabilities, but in general. Sound is extremely versatile. It can tell you a lot of info in a very short amount of time. I'd love to see more exploration in that space.

I'm sighted and have been using different alert tones for different events since the early days of the Mac and the Soundmaster cdev. My mobile has different tones for Tusky, ProtonMail, and incoming text messages. Why wouldn't applications allow different tones for different events? Having a single default bloop is just lazy on the part of the dev, who could write a single function, point to it from each event, and send a variable with the event to tell the function which sound to play.
@iska Right, but sadly those clients use the libpurple library to communicate right? I'm an admin/mod on a bunch of servers and sadly it won't let me do that through those... and I'm technically breaking the TOS and I'm afraid of what'll happen to those servers if I get banned... and honestly that whole situation is just sad.
Metatext doesn't seem to have sounds either. I love UI sounds too, especially startup and shutdown sounds. All my own programs include UI sounds by default.

Die App registriert sich für FCM beim Firebase Server – wofür sie u.U. gar kein Konto braucht, ich kenne das Protokoll da nicht tief genug (im Prinzip täte ja eine einfache EINDEUTIGE Client-ID reichen). Damit ist aber auch Deine IP-Adresse (ein "personenbezogenes Datum") dort bekannt – Konto oder nicht. Wenn Du keine GApps auf dem Gerät hast, funktioniert das Ganze wahrscheinlich eh nicht(es sei denn die App kann auch "Pull"), da kein FCM.
Google-Play Services habe ich schon auf dem Handy. Ohne funktionieren ja eine Reihe von Apps nicht. Den Play-Store habe ich in Rente geschickt. Geht ohne Google-Konto ja eh nicht. Bin mir bewusst, dass somit noch jede Menge Tracking möglich ist und versuche über Blokada und entsprechende Plugins in Fennec gegenzusteuern. Ob das reicht? Keine Ahnung.
Ich habe die Play Services schon seit Jahren nicht mehr auf dem Smarty. Keine Apps da, die nicht funktionieren – da ich nix mehr aus dem Spielzeugladen beziehe; die aus F-Droid tun allesamt fein.
Blokada kann ich in letzter Zeit nicht mehr empfehlen, u.a. da das jetzt auch cloudbasiert (und der Anbieter wohl fragwürdig) ist. Alternative: TrackerControl von Konrad Kollnig (F-Droid bzw. bei mir).

Der Tipp mit TrackerControl ist super. Habs installiert und bin begeistert. Ist viel übersichtlicher und intuitiver. Das war's dann wohl für Blokada.
Urgs, da hast Du gerade die kritischen Teile erwischt – all die Apps, in die definitiv keine Tracker rein gehören, aber wo man sie ständig findet. Und nein, die Buchungsprozesse hält man wohl leider lieber unter Verschluss – wobei das durchaus möglich wäre, eine entsprechende frei verfügbare und idealerweise gut dokumentierte (REST-) API vorausgesetzt, die sich via HTTPS nutzen ließe. Bei Banking geht das ja, siehe Hibiscus & Co auf dem PC.
