Now @mozilla is officially building upon the Fediverse. Their foray will be an instance hosted at mozilla.social.

But I hope they go further than this:

1. Make Thunderbird a Fediverse client
2. Build in-browser Fediverse functionality
3. Support a Fediverse app ecosystem

Mozilla can do so much to further the Fediverse. Let's hope that they think big.

Elon Musk suspended Linette Lopez from Twitter after years of critical reporting on his companies.

In a new piece, she lays out Elon Musk’s playbook of exploiting workers while building a cult following. These tactics aren’t new. Musk has always been this way, regardless of what former boosters like Kara Swisher want you to believe. They were just happy to ignore it for access while journalists like Lopez did the work.

#Mozilla is creating a fediverse instance. What is Mozilla?

• A “not-for-profit” that owns multiple for-profit businesses and pays its CEO $5.6M
• Gets ~83% of its revenue (~$500,000,000) every year from surveillance capitalist Google
• Makes a browser that protects your privacy (*some configuration required)
• Is now a VC…

This is the best we can expect from Silicon Valley/capitalism. Question is: can we do better than that?

… Perhaps the best way to understand Mozilla is in the words of their president on their new VC arm:

“We see a lot of startups who want to tackle things like privacy, trustworthy AI, and alternatives to Twitter… alternatives are not going to emerge unless there’s founders and companies who build them. And the founders are not going to build them unless there’s money aligned with their vision … So I think we need to still be about commerce and creating wealth”

… Or, in what a previous head of public policy at Mozilla told me while we were chatting before our talks at a data protection conference:

“Aral, we’re just another Silicon Valley tech company, I don’t understand why you’re holding us to a such a higher standard.”

When I finally managed to pick my jaw off the floor the only retort I could manage was: “But that’s not what you tell people.”

Just spent like 30 minutes trying to find where svr4 i386 loads the page tables into cr3 before realising that it uses Intel's hardware task switching so it just tells the CPU to load all the state from a struct instead (modern OSes stopped doing that a *long* time ago because it's slower than doing it by hand, but the TSS is still relevant because it also contains information about eg which IO ports can be accessed, which resulted in this very obscure OpenBSD bug: os2museum.com/wp/the-history-o…)

The fuck! I understand I didnt sleep for almost two days as it currently stands but I know how to read or atleast I think so. Why the hell it doesn't work?
Code: var data = new Dictionary<string, string>()
{
{ "status", post },
{ "media_ids", String.Format("['{0}',]", attachmentId) }
};
And on docs.joinmastodon.org/client/i… they tell to encode arrays like that. Help #programming

@sanguis agreed! I was angling for something a little more turnkey.

It’s like Linux, I like the *idea* of it, and I love that it exists and that people make it work— having attempted to use it on the daily, I spent more time trying to get it working than I did any work on it.

These social platforms need to find ways to be convenient for users where possible. This site is making improvements!

in reply to Ravi Yee Joshi

@raviyeejoshi @sanguis The UI layer is evolving. It's much better now that it used to be for Linux. Plus ChromeOS is powered by Linux (as are many other interfaces we interact with on a daily basis). Even Mac is based on BSD, right? Not technically Linux, but most folks wouldn't know the differences.

Not everyone wants to be able to build and maintain the interface. Services for this are coming for the fediverse.

I love this. I can see it taking a while to get used to but when you do you'd be absolutely screwed without it.

I have a surprising amount of unfinished music project files on my computer called "meow" or some variation there of.
This, for example, is "meowmeow".
And uh... if it sounds rough or like some things don't fit together, that's... because it's unfinished.
But it's been sitting here for years and I don't know what to do with it.
So why not.

This is...absolutely gorgeous...I accidentally fell asleep listening to this on loop (Tusky automatically loops audio) and had a very nice nap. Having woken up again I am hearing more of the details I missed and very much admiring your work!

You just caused me to dedicate the rest of my day to going through my own musical compositions (many of which are unfinished/fragments) and try to properly catalog them and get more of them finished/written out/typeset! My stuff is a mess between multiple binders and my computer and it needs reorganization badly, not to mention my yet-to-be -realized desire to make myself a website to share my works with others. Thank you so, SO much for kicking me into action. :dragon_heart:

As for what you posted, I found that what you already have almost loops as-is! Alternatively, I could imagine some contrasting section following this, that has other chords, maybe dominated by the dominant (i.e. the V chord, or here, B major) and progressions that lead to it. That could also make for a transition that can loop back to the beginning. My only other suggestion is that I feel the A-sharp (around 00:17 and similar instances) doesn't really fit.

Sidenote: I love the key of E major and this reminds me I have a whole neo-Baroque-style suite to finish up that's in this key.

Firefox version is pending approval from Mozilla. I made a quick modified build that works as a Manifest V2 extension, since FF doesn't support service workers in V3 and won't for (at least) several months.

FYI for anyone in the USA with #Type1Diabetes or #Type2Diabetes, and who is struggling to afford insulin.

Canadian pharmacies will ship to the US. Even with shipping, the cost is dramatically lower.

I like, and our son has ordered from, Marks Marine Pharmacy. He had insulin shipped all the way to Texas multiple times without an issue. The staff is incredibly helpful! They'll give you a price over the phone or via live chat.

Screenshot of email exchange between journalist Brandy Zadrozny and an anonymous member of the news reading public.

The anonymous writer is informing Brandy that reports about American students using litter boxes at school is not misinformation, and that they believe kids have been asking for them, but the requests have been denied. The tone of the email is similar to the comments that idiots leave under youtube videos that they don't like.

Brandy is fairly firm in reply that the story has been researched and is misinformation. Aside from some possibly mocking incredulous comments, the main gist of the reply is to please send through specific details relating to the story if the original writer happens to have them.

Some of the calls for Musk to be replaced on Twitter are well-intentioned, such as this one from @attorneynora, a (genuine) advocate for freedom of expression (also a teaching colleague): cnn.com/2022/12/20/opinions/el…

Replacing Musk won't fix a thing, unfortunately, because he'll still be Twitter's absolute dictator.

What we need to do is replace Twitter -- not with another VC-driven centralized monolith but rather a decentralized federation (maybe the one we're using now).
