A few years ago, I wrote a program in Go that would get the RSS feed out of an Apple Podcasts link. I've been using it the past couple years, but I didn't like dragging around this 4.1 MB executable that's not stored anywhere convenient and I was bored, so ended up rewriting it this morning. Have you tried doing a GUI app in Rust yet? For a Windows-only app, you could use native-windows-gui (crates.io/crates/native_window…). Of course, the major Rust GUI toolkits render their own widgets, with more and more stuff implemented in pure Rust. But for little utilities, we really ought to have something wx-like.
nwg is cool in how easy it makes getting out an accessible classical windows application, but it seems hard for me to twist my head around for how to bind data to it and stuff like that.
@matt I thought about it, but I just can't Rust. I hate programming that way, because sometimes I just want to get an idea out. I don't really care if this string will live until the end of the program as opposed to the end of the function, because it runs for like 5 seconds. Perhaps a lot of my resistance to rust's safety though is because I haven't been bitten by enough null pointer errors etc yet (although I sure have gotten a few...).

I already thought about giving it a try, but I've got some ideas in mind that I would like develop for more than just Windows (preferably at least Mac too, maybe even mobile). We don't have a UI library for Rust that is accessible on more than just Windows right?
@ToniBarth Well, GUI libraries that implement accessibility using AccessKit are, at least in theory, accessible on Windows, macOS, and Linux. So far, the Rust GUI library with the most complete AccessKit support is egui. But, as egui is one of those libraries that renders its own widgets using OpenGL, it's kind of overkill for small utilities IMO.

This year marks the 200th anniversary of the invention of the Braille code. The International Council on English Braille, which has a General Assembly every four years, met this time in Auckland, New Zealand. I was profoundly honoured to be invited to deliver the keynote address to mark the 200th anniversary of the code that gave blind people literacy. The address is called “Safeguarding the Legacy, Investing the Inheritance”.
Whether you’re blind or not, whether you read Braille or not, if you’re interested in the cultural impact and the history of a system that gave an uneducated minority literacy, I hope you find this address informative. You can read the text, or listen to the audio. It is of course presumptuous of me to think I might be remembered at all when my life is over. But if I am, I would like to hope that this address might be a reason. I put months of work into it, because Louis Braille is my hero. I do not have the words to truly convey the impact his work, his genius, has had on my life.

@panpantepan GTK isn't really involved: blurring the contents of the screen behind a window requires the compositor to do that, because it's the only component that knows what's behind a window. All that GTK has to do is to make the background of that window transparent, and it already allows you to do that.
@ebassi @panpantepan If GNOME Shell ever gets upstream support for this - from a developer's perspective, it's not just transparency but also things like the blur radius and more. Optimally, this would be `background: transparent` _and_ `backdrop-filter: blur(8px)` etc. :)

Jemand hat ein Problem damit, dass ich "veraltetes Wagenmaterial unkritisch abfeiere". Weil es in dem spezifischen Wagen, mit dem ich gefahren bin, kein barrierefreies Abteil gibt. Im Wagen nebenan hätte es eins gegeben.
Ich bin es so leid und so müde. Leute wie er nehmen mir jede Lust, noch was ins Internet zu schreiben.
Ich hatte heute Morgen etwas dazu geschrieben. Und mich eigentlich dagegen entschieden, es zu posten. Jetzt hab ich aber echt langsam die Faxen dicke, also bitte:
Es gibt diese Leute. Die weisen dich bei jedem vergessenen oder bewusst nicht gesetzten Alt-Text darauf hin, wie mies du bist. Die geben dir auf jeden Post oder Text, den du veröffentlichst, das Feedback, dass du nicht genug über Barrierefreiheit oder Fahrradmitnahme geschrieben hast. Diese Leute haben sicher Recht und sind bestimmt bessere Menschen als ich. Und ich bin vermutlich ein Fossil, dass die Welt nicht mehr versteht. Aber es raubt mir die Lust, noch was ins Internet zu schreiben.
Es sind immer die Leute, die dich nicht unterstützen. Die noch nie ein nettes Wort gesagt haben. Die immer alles umsonst haben wollen und trotzdem eine Riesen-Anspruchshaltung haben. Es sind die Leute, die über jede Paywall zetern. Die wollen, dass andere die Arbeit für sie machen. Aber wehe, sie machen es nicht so, wie sie das gerne hätten. Es sind immer Leute, die sich selbst nie hinterfragen und sich ständig im Recht wähnen. Leute, die für Toleranz kämpfen wollen, aber dabei respektlos sind.
Wann haben diese Leute eigentlich verlernt, nachsichtig zu sein? Im Zweifel einfach mal das Beste anzunehmen? Das Gegenüber nicht automatisch als böse zu betrachten? Die Möglichkeit einzuräumen, dass der Post oder Text, den sie sehen, das Ergebnis einer Abwägung ist, die sie nicht sehen oder verstehen? Dass das Gegenüber kein Idiot ist, sondern ein Mensch mit Erfahrungen und Gefühlen, der sich seine Gedanken gemacht hat? Der vielleicht seine eigenen Probleme hat, in der Welt klar zu kommen?
Ich lese die Zugpost sehr gerne, merkt man doch mit jedem Wort die Freude am Reisen. Zeitgleich liegen mir Alttexte sehr am Herzen, da ich sonst einfach nicht wissen kann, was ein Bild zeigt. Es ist schade, dass die Bitte darum bei dir so negativ ankommt. Gleichwohl weiß ich darum, dass bei weitem nicht alle es schaffen, höflich darauf hinzuweisen, dass sie hilfreich wären. (1/2)
Was das Wagenmaterial angeht, könnte ich mir vorstellen, dass auch eine kurze Info zur Barrierefreiheit schon hilfreich wäre. Bist du in der Pflicht das zu liefern? Nein. My Family has been using either #Ubuntu (2 computers) or #OpenSuse #TumbleWeed (5 computers) - for some years now.
#Yast enabled my family members to do a lot of things for themselves without great further knowledge (or - gasp - the command line), e.g. installing a printer.
I have already semi switched to RebornOS (pretty much base Arch, but less command line and more gui focused than EndeavourOS) main pc is still dual boot but hoping to wean myself off over time.
Work dev box will be going to Ubuntu from another distro, house NAS will be too. Nothing else cracks the reliability and support threshold, and I'm sorry Mint is just Ubuntu tuned up.
New music machine will be going to Windows (10 pro if I can avoid 11) because I'm done with Linux music and audio.
Appropriate environments for target use cases.
I've experimented with MX and it's good but not 100% there. Might give Fedora a try again but only experimentally, not on important boxen.
probably #mint as last time I ran Linux it seemed fairly stable and user friendly. #ubuntu is another one that gets recommended for ease of use. Way back I remember using #centOS for a uni project.
Switched to GNU/Linux about 20 years ago and as time goes by and Windows is becoming more and more enshittified bloated spyware and adware it is becoming more and more obvious switching to GNU/Linux was one of the smartest and best computer-related things I did. Currently I'm using openSUSE Tumbleweed with KDE Plasma desktop and loving it.
