Wow, a year has passed since we recorded this episode for the NerdOut@Spotify podcast! That was a fun one! Who would have thought what the future would hold for us... 😅 I still think we managed to put together a decent episode. Sharing in case you’d like to give it a listen! Would love to know what you think.

Wow, apparently there is now a classifieds sales platform for the Fediverse called Flohmarkt ("flea market"). You can find out more at:

➡️ codeberg.org/flohmarkt/flohmar…

...and especially its wiki page at:

➡️ codeberg.org/flohmarkt/flohmar…

The wiki contains a list of existing servers, compatibility with other Fediverse platforms like Mastodon, and instructions for installation.

No official account yet but you can follow the lead developer at:

➡️ @grindhold

Normalize being fucking patient with free and open-source software.

Normalize not saying "phew, this latest version was a fucking disaster! the old versions were better" to everyone you know, especially if you contributed no development, testing, issue reporting or other time to the software.

Normalize writing GitHub issues that thoroughly describe a problem as well as you absolutely can (you don't have to be perfect at this, but it's more important that you're patient and considerate than being exactly technically correct) without editorializing in it. Leave out the "I'm going to (paid competitor)" threats and the "This software is shit now" sentiments. You are talking to human beings who are giving you a thing for free, so the least you can do is not make them regret doing that.

(Edit: If you like this, I should point out that I'm a free and open-source software dev myself, and I could really use your help right now.)

Condolences.

Mike Karels of Berkeley Unix/BSDi died of a heart attack on his way home from BSDCon.

Karels was responsible for implementing TCP/IP on BSD, which was later ported to Linux. Since you're reading this, you are benefitting directly from his work.

RIP, Mike. We won't forget you.

Update time: #LibreOffice 24.2.4 is now available. This is the fourth minor update to the 24.2 branch, which we originally released in February this year (with a new "year.month" version scheme): blog.documentfoundation.org/bl… #foss #OpenSource #news

A friend just reminded me today that #braille watches for the #blind inspired by the soviet braille watch tradition are still being produced nowadays. I have found an eshop with world wide shipping meranom.com/en/vostok/vostok-t…
Also there is a nice article on the history of these watches: mroatman.wixsite.com/watches-o…

In case anyone's wondering what this image is about (AI description):

The image is of Glastonbury Tor, a hill capped by the ruins of a medieval church tower in Somerset, England. The tower is made out of light brown stone and appears to be quite tall. There is a doorway near the base of the tower. The sky behind the tower is blue and there are wispy white clouds.

The text "@Michelle Cowbourne" is written in the bottom left corner of the image.

If you see a domain name ending in .ai that means the island of Anguilla got some money, as it is the owner of this country domain.

”For each domain registration, Anguilla’s government gets anywhere from $140 to thousands of dollars from website names sold at auctions, according government data.”

In 2023 just over 20% of the government’s total revenue came from these registrations.

”[…] the government used the money to provide free health care for citizens 70 and older, and it has committed millions of dollars to finish building a school and a vocational training center. The government has also allocated funds to improve its airport; doubled its budget for sports activities, events and facilities; and increased the budget for citizens seeking medical treatment overseas.”

The island was hit hard by a hurricane in 2017 and tourism essentially disappeared during the covid pandemic. The .ai domain revenue has been a welcome injection into the economy.

Now you can’t say I never talk about AI in a positive light 😉

Oh, authors will do this

I have done many audits where the devs claim their framework won’t let them reorder the HTML, so they use CSS techniques and fail an SC they never knew existed (1.3.2 Meaningful Sequence).

Regarding finding new authors and books, I should point out John Scalzi's blog is a great resource for science fiction and fantasy. I am not crazy about Scalzi's writing (which he calls himself SF 101) and politics (a bit middle of the road), but his Big Idea section is how I found a lot of very good stuff. whatever.scalzi.com/category/b…

My dog is developing early stages of dementia so he wakes up in the middle of the night confused and scared. For the past 2 months I’ve been cuddling with him on the couch during the night to keep him calm, averaging around 4 hours of sleep.
Then, while I’m exhausted during the day, he sleeps like a baby.
I’m losing my mind but I love him so much and I just want time to stop and go back to when he was an hyper active puppy and we were running together every day.
Time is a motherfucker…

Worried about privacy with iOS 18’s AI features? Apple apparently plans to make certain iOS 18 AI features (like the chatbot) not only privacy-conscious, but also opt-in only. - 9to5Mac 9to5mac.com/2024/06/05/worried…

Are you as tired as I am from people bringing up Munich’s Linux phase as a bad example?

Well, the European Commission's Open Source Observatory released a case study that comprehensively tells the whole story.

Instead of just sharing it like a reasonable person would I went full Charlie Day in a blogpost about how it applies to Open Source in Public Administration efforts today: tarakiyee.com/lets-talk-about-…
