“By expanding the human shielding charge to every inch of #Gaza, #Israel is using a familiar strategy at an unprecedented scale... the human shielding allegation…strategy has previously been seen in conflicts ranging from the Vietnam War to the war against ISIS. However, the intensity and scope of how Israel has mobilized the human shields accusation in the past year is unprecedented.” | Nicola Perugini and Neve Gordon, Hewish Currents jewishcurrents.org/human-shiel…

I will never forgive The New York Times for bringing this to pass. They violated the journalistic norms they claim to uphold in their vindictive campaign against him. They hounded him out of office. They'd best not crow and they'd best not do the same to Kamala Harris. But I have no faith they can restrain themselves. Same to the Post.

"I’ve always been more 'Let’s just kick the fascists' asses' than 'Blue no matter who.'

But I will obviously support anyone Democrats nominate over Donald Trump. That’s the easiest choice of my life that doesn’t involve waffle fries.

When it all comes down to it, I’m a single-issue voter. My issue is that I’d like to keep voting."

"Donald Trump and Chris LaCivita are about to hit Kamala Harris with an avalanche of racist and sexist attacks and a ton of slut-shaming. Democrats across the board need to be saying now what we all know, which is that this will bring out the very worst of Trump. Racism and sexism are his brand. Charlottesville is his brand."

The post about representation in cyberpunk settings that I just boosted reminded me of an idea I had not long ago: It would be cool if someone made a game similar to System Shock, but as an audio game. For those not familiar with System Shock, Jimmy Maher covered it well: filfre.net/2021/03/system-shoc… 1/2
in reply to Matt Campbell

Now, in System Shock, what Maher calls the diegetic UI is explained in-world by having the player character outfitted with a neural implant in the backstory. So in an audiogame remake, the hacker could be blind, and then the implant, rather than giving them sight, gives them a new audio UI to their world. 2/2
in reply to Matt Campbell

BTW, someone wrote a complete fan novelization of System Shock, called Free Radical: shamusyoung.com/shocked/ Obviously they made the story their own, filling in details that aren't fleshed out in the game, especially details about the backstory. Regardless, I appreciated being able to enjoy a version of the story aspect of one of the many games I'll likely never be able to play.

Wow, in #nvda, you can now press NVDA+ctrl+escape to enable/disable screen curtain. #accessibility #blind

You sure can! I just shared your post - nice little tip for people :)

I've had this mapped to NVDA plus printscreen for ages. Seemed a far more sensible shortcut

If this doesn’t energize the party, literally nothing will. We need to be running this ad non-stop on every available screen in the country.

Can we put this on Youtube to make it easier to distribute? Or is the video already there?

This is epic. Apparently, in 2011 Donald Trump donated to Harris's campaign. Here is the post with an image of the check! :). x.com/rpsagainsttrump/status/1…

This is selfless leadership. We’ve seen leaders put themselves over the country for too long. Trump is doing that right now. Now it’s time to find the candidate who can end Trump’s political career. nytimes.com/2024/07/21/us/poli…

Joe Biden will go down historically as an extremely underrated president, especially if Trump is defeated again in November

I know this is obvious, but I still decided to run through the following exercise. I asked OpenAI to analyze its own description of a photo. Here is what we came up with: The logical pattern of the description primarily follows a "concrete to generic" approach. Here's a breakdown of how this pattern unfolds:

1. **Concrete Details about the Main Subject**:
- The description begins with specific details about the man: his appearance and attire. (1/5)

in reply to victor tsaran

- "The photo shows a man sitting at an outdoor café. He has short, light brown hair and is wearing a pink T-shirt with a black shoulder strap across his chest."

2. **Concrete Details about the Immediate Surroundings**:
- It then moves to the specific details of what is immediately around the man: the table and the coffee. (2/5)

Unknown parent

victor tsaran
This progression from specific, concrete details to more general, contextual information helps build a vivid and complete picture of the scene, starting with what is most immediately noticeable and expanding outward to give a fuller sense of the environment and setting.
this is a really nice pattern. I think this is why these descriptions sound so palatable:) And here is the picture itself! :) ! (5/5)

Politically, Biden's dropping out creates all sorts of uncertainty.

Procedurally, however, what happens how is extremely clear: The DNC will use its convention to officially designate its nominees for president and vice president, and those people will appear on the ballot in all 50 states, DC, etc.

A summary of state ballot access laws, from the officials who run the elections, is at nass.org/sites/default/files/r…

It would have been much more complicated if this had occurred after the convention.

Do Democrats have enough time to find a different path to victory?

It's actually not an unusual concept.

Until 1968, presidential candidates were always picked by party conventions.

And that process, though providing less public input, also produced some great nominees.

If the rumors are true, this week could be another exciting week for opensource LLMS! Meta may release Llama-3-405b on this Tuesday. Also there could be updates to 8b and 70b models distilled from 405B. Joe Spisak, a product director at Meta says they were initially going to call Llama 3 8b and 70b a prerelease or preview because these models didn't have all the things they planned to release.

@vick21 No, it doesn't work. I lost faith in multimodal on llama.cpp, which Ollama relies on. Llama.cpp dropped multimodal support on March 7 (supposedly temporarily), but there is no momentum or interest among the devs to bring it back. They all seem preoccupied with providing immediate next day support for new text-only LLMs being released constantly.
in reply to Chi Kim

Interesting. I'm sort of getting tired of all these models being released every day. It increasingly looks more and more like a gaming exercise! :)

Joe Biden just announced on Twitter that he would not be seeking reelection.
"Why am I posting about this", you didn't ask? Well, he announced it in a letter, contained in an image, with the alt text of "A letter from president Biden". So for anyone curious what that letter actually said, here's a transcription. I had GPT transcribe it since Windows OCR was mangling parts of it, and OneStep Reader was even worse, but Aira verified the accuracy of it.
