Controversial suggestion: A future edition of Rust should make no-std the default for new library crates. Safe Rust code that uses core and alloc, no extern references, and other such code as transitive dependencies is, if I'm not mistaken, object-capability-safe. If that's true, then it should also be, by extension, deterministic unless explicitly given references (object capabilities) for sources of non-determinism. It'd be great to have all that by default for most transitive dependencies.
in reply to Matt Campbell

@chadaustin For a large set of libraries, I think interior mutability should be pushed outward, to the caller, as much as possible. I realize that can only go so far, though.

LibreOffice 24.8 Released, This is What’s New.
I have used LibreOffice off and on for years, but with increasingly annoying Microsoft Office 365 issues at work I have come back to it full time on MacOS. I have not been disappointed and I really like their privacy options too. If you want a free Office Suite with compatibility to read and write Office formats, this is a great alternative.

@Man2Dev the diff compared to tar.zx seem insignificant. Why does it raise concerns for attacks?
in reply to daniel:// stenberg://

Presumably their user base likely prefers user-friendly options like zip. I was comparing the diff between zip and 7z. As for the attack although it migh, not really be practical I was referring to scenarios like the zlib vulnerability.

🏓 🇨🇿 🇸🇰 🥇 🥇 Historic Gold for MATELOVA and BALAZOVA at the Tabletennis European Championships - In her third European final, BALAZOVA made history by securing Slovakia’s first European title

"Hana MATELOVA of Czechia and Barbora BALAZOVA of Slovakia clinched their first-ever medal together at the Continental Championships. At the LIEBHERR European Championships in Linz, MATELOVA and BALAZOVA triumphed over reigning champions Sofia POLCANOVA of Austria and Bernadette SZOCS of Romania. The bronze medals went to Izabela LUPULESKU and Sabina SURJAN of Serbia, and Natalia BAJOR of Poland and Tatiana KUKULKOVA of Slovakia.

In her third European final, BALAZOVA made history by securing Slovakia’s first European title. After losing the mixed doubles finals in 2013 and 2020, she finally claimed victory. For MATELOVA, it marked her second European title and a significant win for Czechia, having previously won the mixed doubles title in 2013 (ironically against BALAZOVA).

The final was intense, but the Czech-Slovak pairing always seemed one step ahead.

“This was our best match here. Even we were impressed with our performance in the final. We had never won a medal before at the Europeans, and we’ve been playing together since 2011 in Herning. For sure, the experience of playing finals was on their side. POLCANOVA especially, since she knows how to handle the pressure of the final stage, having been there three times before,” MATELOVA said.

Sometimes, experience can also be a burden, making it harder to carry.

“They were nervous, especially in the opening games, while we were more relaxed. Before the match, we just said, ‘Let’s fight and see what happens.’ We stuck to our game plan,” added MATELOVA.

BALAZOVA shared her thoughts about her nerves before the match.

“Five minutes before the match, I told Hana that I was nervous, but she calmed me down. Even if we lost, we had already achieved a lot by winning a silver medal. So I just wanted to give my best without feeling the pressure of the result. We had a rocky path throughout the entire tournament with a really tough draw. From round one, it was challenging. Also, we weren’t sure if this would be our last European Championship, so we just wanted one medal to say goodbye. But to win gold—it’s unbelievable.”

Reflecting on their challenging path, MATELOVA added, “The first match was the hardest. We faced Charlotte LUTZ and Jia Nan YUAN of France. It couldn’t have been a tougher start, but we managed to beat them 3-0. Strangely, my defeat in singles helped me focus entirely on doubles, and I had plenty of rest between matches, allowing me to prepare in peace. Yesterday’s match against Natalia BAJOR and Tatiana KUKULKOVA was also incredibly difficult. They had a 2-0 lead and two match points,” MATELOVA recalled.

BALAZOVA also shared a personal anecdote: “After I lost in singles to LUTZ, without much of a chance, my fiancé told me, ‘Maybe it’s for the best because you might become the European champion in doubles.’ That idea stuck in my mind, and I thought about it before the final. For me, the toughest match was the quarterfinal against BERGSTROM and KALLBERG, when we finally secured our medal.”

Women's Doubles final:

Sofia POLCANOVA, Bernadette SZOCS (Austria, Romania) - Hana MATELOVA, Barbora BALAZOVA (Czechia, Slovakia) 2-3 (7-11, 11-7, 9-11, 11-7, 6-11)

Semi final

Sofia POLCANOVA, Bernadette SZOCS (Austria, Romania) - Izabela LUPULESKU, Sabina SURJAN (Serbia) 3-2 (10-12, 11-4, 11-5, 5-11, 11-3)

Natalia BAJOR, Tatiana KUKULKOVA (Poland, Slovakia) - Hana MATELOVA, Barbora BALAZOVA (Czechia, Slovakia) 2-3 (11-8, 11-5, 12-14, 5-11, 11-13)"

so in Windows 11 (23H2), File Explorer gives you feedback on searching with #NVDA. I opened a folder on my NAS, hit f3 and typed something in, and got a couple of files. i was in a different explorer window when it announced the search was complete and it had found 2 files. How does it send that to the screen reader? it isn't a typical notification, but I wasn't looking at the window in question.
#nvda
in reply to Sean Randall

Was it an alert? Those can be received system-wide. Failing that, given that it was on Windows 11, it was probably a UIA notification but the exact API use for those escapes me at the moment.

We have a server at work that can’t boot with SSDs in it. Yes. You read that right. It will not boot with SSDs in it. You have to boot it first before installing your drives. What the fuck?
in reply to aaron

does it try and boot from the ssds and fail? or is there some bug in the ahci/NVME controler or something
in reply to Devin

@sparksexist I’m not really sure, I think it tries to boot from the ssd’s regardless of what you set boot options to. I’m not sure how though because there is no efi partitions on any of the drives.

When copying audiobooks from a 2011 WD drive to my new one, 2 files out of thousands give me an "Invalid MS-DOS Function" error. They appear to play fine. I've tried all suggested fixes, check disk, defrag, creating the CopyFileBufferedSynchronousIo registry key. Still happens. I think I can download the files again but wondering if there is anything else to try? Afterwards, I was going to reformat the drive and reuse it, wonder if that's the only way to fix this?
in reply to Jay Pellis

Try copying with cp under Linux if you can. Windows likes to be a shit about copying files.

Increasingly convinced that people shouldn't run a #Mastodon instance for others to rely on unless they:
1. use a specialised, managed hosting service; or
2. legitimately want to learn about the gory details of how federation works, managing and scaling a large Ruby on Rails application, tuning a database server and background task runner, orchestrating careful back-ups, setting up an alert system, and many more things.

Those can be extremely useful things to learn, but it's becoming clear that it isn't as relatively uninvolved as, say, throwing WordPress on a server to run a low-traffic blog. And those are only the technical tasks.

This entry was edited (3 weeks ago)
in reply to Andre Louis

@FreakyFwoof Looks like it's the Tweesecake home server from more scrolling on my part. Seriously though rolling your own Mastodon server from start to finish all on your own and maintaining and making sure it continues to run is neither uninvolved or inexpensive. And people really need to consider this before running a server for others.
in reply to Amanda Carson

Mastodon is honestly a resource hog, arguably Ruby is really not meant for web apps. Maintenance is one thing, moderation is another. I don't think the average Fediverse user has any idea how much is out there that we have to deal with so we can foster a safer place for everyone. It is a lot of mental strain from the worst of humanity at times. But it is definitely worth it. If anyone hosts a server, a thank you now and then goes a long way, especially if the service is provided for free.

There are also other servers if anyone does not want to deal with Mastodon, I ran #Pleroma and forks for years, which is lightweight and maintaining the software stack is a lot less involved. Then, there's #GoToSocial, which really can't be compared to anything else, except maybe #Snac. They are just brilliant.

Small, focused instances are always better, so is having more accounts, in case one server goes down. Just my opinion.

So I just had my alarm go off but I was already awake for 2 hours. Before the alarm went off I could not fall asleep. After it went off it was so much easier to fall asleep. Why?

I think cuz before my mind was wandering. After the only thing on my mind was "I gotta get up" making it easier to fall asleep

Now I wonder how I can use this to fall asleep faster for real

in reply to Leah

Set an alarm for the time you need to fall asleep, then the only thing on your mind will be the need to fall asleep.

in reply to MicroBlog Castellano
