No apache2 /php, nagios or clones thereof please. I don’t have these in my stack today, and my expertise in managing them is about 20 years out of date. I prefer to avoid JVM stuff but I’m not violently against it.
Doesn’t have to be in ports yet ( like sensu.io/ server) if it’s in a friendly language.
I am not familiar with Sensu and should check that out, but I've been gravitating towards the "Prometheus/OpenTSDB, jam it all into time series somehow (VictoriaMetrics for low resource usage), use webhooks to issue the alerts configured in Grafana" method.
@feld @maikel is a huge fan of sensu. We don’t have the server in FreeBSD ports but I poked it a bit about 18 months ago and it seems feasible to port it.
I also tried openobserve, port again seems doable but I get the feeling they are experimenting with licensing and business models still. I really want a simple store of logs that doesn’t have elastic/opensearch/mongo at the core.
@feld thanks that is exactly what I want. I can’t believe I’ve not seen this already. I actually like graylog a lot but it requires both mongodb for config data and *search for data and it’s an operational PITA to upgrade @maikel
And the community edition is not crippled? I'm happy to pay (and pay well) for support but we *must* run publicly available and OSS-licensed code. No exceptions.
@feld @maikel I recently started using #VictoriaLogs and have been impressed, at least compared to my previous usage of a central `syslogd` and `grep`. Needed a syslogd_flags containing `-O rfc5424` on BSD systems to prevent it mixing host and app names. A colleague installed Prometheus/Grafana some years back and while it produced pretty and entertaining graphs, none of it seemed actually useful and I've never seen decent use case examples for such metrics.
It's not just about metrics themselves. You can just centralize all your stuff here. Most people use multiple systems: one for metrics (cpu % perhaps), and another for monitoring processes etc (is nginx running)
But you can just leverage a time series database to do both. You can use the systemd exporter for example to get the services into the time series database, then setup alert rules for those. Process is running if it has a value of 1, stopped or absent if value is 0 or null
You get a lot of power if you apply a little creativity
@feld I have experience with Prometheus and AlertManager and I saw that Victoria Metrics and Logs can be more efficient and replace many things. Is it really just better 1:1 alternative?
- prometheus - influxdb - opentsdb - graphite - (maybe datadog? can't remember) - their own API - all of PromQL, plus some improvements to it that allow you to do certain queries that are literally impossible in normal PromQL
The client/agent side is a 7.5MB binary right now vs 100MB+ for Prometheus
It's faster, uses fewer resources, and has a far more efficient storage implementation (like 10:1 compression)
and it's basically a complete drop-in replacement. It supports almost all of the prometheus.yaml config file. There are a few things you may have to remove, but all your target configuration etc will still work as-is so you don't have to re-engineer anything
It's good. Someone sat down and said "we can do this better with less bloat" and they did it. And I hope they become filthy rich for it.
@feld so to sum it feels like they saw Prometheus did it themselved and now it looks like a worse version of it.
I use at my job Prometheus, AlertManager and Grafana stack and I'm wondering if this can be done better and also at the same time if I understand correctly it also comes with more easily accessible logs? Sorry I'm trying to grasp it and I see you have experience with Victoria things.
I'm not sure what you mean by this. Are you referring to my screenshot? That's just the basic web interface to Victoria Logs. There's also one for Victoria Metrics. But I use Grafana with Victoria. You just add it as a Prometheus data source and it works.
I have never used AlertManager, just the alerts+webhooks directly in Grafana. But Victoria does have their own AlertManager equivalent.
Also, I have hated every implementation of "Logs" in Grafana. Loki is terrible and the Grafana support is bad IMHO. But I *think* you can also use VictoriaLogs with all of those things in case you want alerts based on certain log events
@psyhackological I also added about 8 EC2 instances reporting metrics to CloudWatch and it cost me $200. So I dumped CloudWatch really fast. Do NOT recommend! @feld @dch
@feld the big attraction for me with sensu, is that it uses an etcd backend so you don’t have a SPoF in monitoring. Other than that @maikel knows it far more than I.

@SylvieLorxu I am taking basically that approach - so anything that can fetch a bmp from an URL and render it should probably just work, more or less (as I'm not familiar with the other offerings out there, I expect that there might need to be a little tweaking but I'm sure it can be made to work)
What's on my GitHub right now should be functional enough to use, actually - I'm trying to improve some rendering issues and am going to add authentication but it's definitely at the MVP stage

TRMNL calls itself "unbrickable" and Open Source, telling you you can host your own server and that basically everything is fully supported: web.archive.org/web/2025071818…. This is not true. Especially for mobile: you can't see your saved posts so you have to put it on desktopsite, story making is still in beta and the feed isn't good for now. I'm a huge advocate for making apps accessible, but I find myself saying "fuck it" when dealing with Liquid Glass.
It's not possible to maintain contrast across a range of app content with a text label that's non-deterministic. When someone who's empathetic to the needs of others gives up, it's a huge loss.
Apple has a well earned reputation for accessibility and Alan Dye is fucking that up for a lot of folks who need affordances.

Does curl cache the discoveries it makes regarding fastest-responding IP results? I suspect the answer is "no of course not".
Maybe it should? An optional, probably short-lived, cache of "I did a dns lookup and here's the lag and thruput on the following IPs" might be handy.
Because a common use-case for me is repeatedly invoking curl against the same site and API with different query parameters - and I can see that optimization decision as being handy info to retain across executions for at least a few minutes.
Maybe an optional --cache-performance-data option.
PS. I dig the transparency on thought process - thank you for posting, and for curl. It's damn handy.
@tbortels it does not cache that. I know the apple operating systems do, but they keep that in memory and know when the network change so that they can flush it correctly.
"Someone" should run tests and see if and how much there is to gain with such a cache as a first step to see if its worth it.

No, the great unwinding will destroy most of them. These corporations and people are not sitting on cash right now. Warren Buffet / Berkshire Hathaway are, though, because they know exactly what will happen: having liquidity will give you a once in a lifetime opportunity to acquire assets.
The idea that these people and companies will be unharmed by the crash is not only wrong, but it's such a defeatist attitude. I'd argue this is the true loser mentality in this discussion.

Hot take: PipeWire shouldn't run as a per-user service. It should always run as a system service, under its own user, listening on a system-wide socket, and the currently logged-in user should be given access to that socket via logind or whatever handles such things now. Same for wireplumber and pipewire-pulse. That would definitely be a good thing for console screen readers that run as root or their own system user like Fenrir or eSpeakup or BRLTTY, and for any screen readers that run before login like console screen readers or Orca on a GUI display manager. Also, it seems weird to regard audio as a user resource rather than a system resource, since computers usually have one sound card and selected audio output, not a separate one for every user. I thought the point of multi-user operating systems was to share system resources between different users, where running Pipewire as a user service gives these system resources to only one user and prevents other users from accessing them.
What I'd like to know is, why not make it a system-level process in the first place? Seems to me like they could have stopped this problem at the gate.

The current administration in the US has, through various funding agencies such as the NSF and NIH, has recently suspended virtually all federal grants to my home university, UCLA (including my own personal grant, although that is far from the most serious impact of this decision), on the grounds that UCLA was “failing to promote a research environment free of antisemitism and bias”. One can certainly debate whether these grounds were justified, or whether they merit the extremely draconian damage to the very research environment that this decision is claiming to protect, but if nothing else this unprecedented decision does not appear to have followed the usual standards of due process for actions of this nature; for instance, there appears to have been no good faith effort by the administration to receive a response from UCLA to its allegations before implementing its decision.
The suspension of my personal grant has a non-trivial impact on myself (in particular, my summer salary, which I had already deferred in order to allow the previously released NSF funds to support several of my graduate students over this period, is now in limbo), and now gives me almost no resources to support my graduate students going forward; but this is only a fraction of a percent of the entire amount being suspended. A far greater concern is the impact on the Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics (IPAM) ipam.ucla.edu/, which despite receiving preliminary approval earlier this year for a new five-year round of funding (albeit at significantly reduced levels) from the NSF, now only has enough emergency funding for a few months of further operation at best if the suspension is not lifted.
