a small correction: the package was not broken because of that Free Palestine banner, but for unrelated technical reasons. However, they picked another solution (grass) rather than the reference implementation (Dart SASS) (presumably) because they did not like the banner. I think that is a reasonable defensible technical rationale expressed in the full set of comments to lean towards grass among an otherwise coin flip choice.

you're not reading the bug report right. the flatpak is broken because the package was built using rubygem-sass (the sass compiler fedora packages often tend to use), but it turns out that doesn't support some bits fractal needs (hence the bug). the comment you linked is saying that using *either* grass *or* dart-sass instead should fix the problem, and he chose grass because he didn't like dart-sass' opinions.

Seeing that some villains are trying to take the T out of LGBT so trans people get erased and ignored. You know that the word "queer" is right there and it includes all of us perverts and freaks, right? We tried hard to get queer to happen, but the straight folk didn't like it so they call us LGBT, like we're simply a list of approved aberrations. And a lot of us queer folk have submitted to this linguistic oppression. I am sad every time I hear a queer person say "LGBT" or "LGBTQIA+" or whatever, because that's accepting the oppressor's language for us. Queer is a good word because it includes everyone who isn't part of the sexual majority. It is inclusive by default and by definition.
For anyone who thinks "queer" is a slur so they prefer "gay" because it's not a slur, I'll point out that only a couple decades ago "gay" was a slur and we said "homosexual" to be polite. Language evolves. Embrace "queer" and avoid having to figure out what groups deserve to be part of an abbreviation.

I have a pair of Intel E810-XXVDA4T timing NICs at home that I’m using as NTP time sources and I wanted to write up how to configure these. The E810-XXCDA4T is a 4-port 25 GbE NIC that is optimized for use as a network time source.
this is bad... I mean it's cool, but it's bad from a security perspective. Jamming GPS may not just skew clocks, but you could wreck high bandwidth links...
is the high precision time source actually required for the link? or is it just "you may need an accurate clock for this application so we'll build it into your NIC, why not?"
@mr64bit I suspect it's required for the link, which means 40gbit and higher probably has similar requirements... I've never investigated this before. 25gbit and 40gbit were still pretty new when I stopped being hands-on in networking
@mr64bit Very few of them probably have GPS receivers, but I would say anything ISP-grade-ish in the 40gbit range probably has some PTP support for clock sync on the network and might want it for full throughput. I've never worked with this kind of gear though, so it's mostly speculation on my part.

Can someone recommend a fantasy or sci-fi series that I can get into? I don’t always read those genres (I have a condition where I can’t visualize images) but recently I liked The Expanse, various Sanderson books, Shadow and Bone etc. I prefer well built worlds with good writing
Earlier this year, on @glyph's recommendation, I read the Scholomance fantasy trilogy by Naomi Novik: _A Deadly Education_, _The Last Graduate_, and _The Golden Enclaves_. The third book has a hell of a reveal about how that trilogy's fantasy world works. I won't spoil any more than that.
@matt very much still recommending this to everybody. it's kind of impossible to talk about the worldbuilding elements that make it so good without spoiling a very important reveal, but if you like worldbuilding, the worldbuilding _is_ the story. Read the trilogy as if it is one book, though. It's a 3-act structure and without the 3rd act it will not fully make sense.
@matt also Naomi Novik is a treat to support in the modern media environment. The first printing of the book had a pretty racially insensitive paragraph, which, when it was pointed out, she… apologized for, fixed, and added sensitivity readings to her process for future work. She's been an activist for fair use for a really long time. And she's on the Fediverse!
@matt aw, bummer. Maybe worth reaching out about at some point, since she's been shown to be amenable to actually fixing things? Probably not today though (per "on the Fediverse" she is apparently in the midst of a family emergency today)
