Google has just updated its 2FA Authenticator app and added a much-needed feature: the ability to sync secrets across devices.

TL;DR: Don't turn it on.

The new update allows users to sign in with their Google Account and sync 2FA secrets across their iOS and Android devices.

We analyzed the network traffic when the app syncs the secrets, and it turns out the traffic is not end-to-end encrypted. As shown in the screenshots, this means that Google can see the secrets, likely even while they’re stored on their servers. There is no option to add a passphrase to protect the secrets, to make them accessible only by the user.

Why is this bad?

Every 2FA QR code contains a secret, or a seed, that’s used to generate the one-time codes. If someone else knows the secret, they can generate the same one-time codes and defeat 2FA protections. So, if there’s ever a data breach or if someone obtains access .... 🧵

Microsoft's Edge browser appears to be sending all the URLs you visit to its Bing API website.

Reddit users first spotted the privacy issues with Edge last week, noticing that the latest version of Microsoft Edge sends a request to bingapis.com with the full URL of nearly every page you navigate to. Microsoft tells The Verge it's investigating ...

*cough*

"Oh did we accidentally write code and put it in our browser that collects info on everything you do, again?

I did something very similar, except I pitched my voice higher. It's pretty cool because it killed almost all the artefacts. I used text from Infinity Welcomes Careful Drivers to test the voice, so it's very slightly inappropriate. I'd probably rate this PG13 if it was a movie.

The browser market is ripe for disruption.

Conclusion is a big yes.

Firebase-host static files under a primary domain .well-known/matrix/{server,client}. Config server to Tailscale Funnel on ports 8443 and 443 (one federation port).

Through a Tailscale Docker container configured as a proxy, traffic can be forward TCP/TLS via socat.

From socat, traefik handles routing to Dendrite.

Was concerned with bandwidth, stability and latency, but things are looking good so far.

Probably a billion possibilities of improvement in this, but it actually ended up as a working setup.

I did a write-up of running @matrix Dendrite behind Tailscale Funnel.

I think I finally found a name to put on the work that needs to be done to bring all the fantastic ideas that come out of academia and esolang into the tooling for developers out there.

And I think this is the way out of the pit of pain and security vulnerabilities our digital infrastructure is in rn.

What do you think?

libadwaita updates

Last update: crab.garden/@alexm/11019448853…

Well, I just landed breakpoints:

- gnome.pages.gitlab.gnome.org/l…

- gnome.pages.gitlab.gnome.org/l…

- gnome.pages.gitlab.gnome.org/l…

Now we just need replacements for leaflet and flap, good thing there's another MR for that. :)

Thanks @nahuel for the original idea. ^^

Otherwise not too much happened. There were a few fixes in switch rows and spin rows, and a new point release. So hopefully the next update will be a bit more exciting :)

Last update: crab.garden/@alexm/11011380181…

Posting this one as individual toots instead, since the last update was unreadable.

---

Not all that much happened in the main branch this time, but we have 2 additions related to list rows, both originally by @brainblasted.

1. There's now AdwSpinRow - it's like AdwEntryRow but with GtkSpinButton.

It has basically identical API to GtkSpinButton - one difference is it omits the value-changed signal - it's 100% identical to notify::value and people can just use that instead.

And it looks a bit nicer than regular spin buttons.

(Overgrown sign of "Torpenhow")

'Torpenhow Hill, England

When the Saxons arrived and asked the Welsh the name of that hill, the Welsh said "pen" which means "hill" in Welsh. So the Saxons used their word for hill, "tor", and called it Torpen (hill hill).

Then the Norse arrived and and the same process added their word for hill "Haugr". so now it was Torpen Haugre (Hill Hill Hill).

Later, the English called it Torpenhow Hill (Hill Hill Hill Hill).

Language is awesome
