#Threads by #Meta forcing itself into the #Fediverse is bad and will harm the Fediverse as a whole if not straight up kill it.
I am baffled to see claims such as "we should give them a chance!" or "this could help the Fediverse grow!", as if we're not talking about one of the probably most immoral, unethical, and predatory businesses in this day and age.
Meta isn't coming to play fair. They're coming to use us for profit.

Meta’s new app “Threads” is up pre-order in the App Store. Let’s do a quick check on what data they want from you compared to the official Mastodon app, Mammoth and Ivory.
Spoiler: Meta wants to know and track everything about you, and Mastodon doesn’t want anything.

This is great! I use Libreoffice for much of my work, though there are some aspects that make it difficult for visual accessibility reasons.
The first issue: the flip point where text becomes white or black based on the cell color in the spreadsheet is incorrect, as a result, a lot of mid range cell colors end up with text that's not readable (unless the text color is overridden).
Another: the highlight color for certain buttons in the UI when the system is in dark mode makes the text unreadable on the button.
I'm at your disposal if you have any questions about any visual accessibility issues.

I've just published my first ever blog: "The Tragedy of the Non-Commons"
I wrote it in July, frustrated by a Twitter thread about how the Tragedy of the #Commons continues to be taught at universities. I then left it (it's somewhat experiemental) but with #COP27 and #Twittermigration coinciding this week, I just wanted it to be out there. Would love for it to be shared here on our #digitalcommons and grateful for any comments

Suggestion: Reach out to your local government, emergency service provider, and/or news org. Let them know that Twitter has ended public access to content and that Mastodon is a working alternative *today*. I did this on the weekend with my local emergency folks and this morning I got a reply back saying they had noticed the embedded Twitter feed on their webpage was broken.
They didn't realize Twitter had cut that service. Now, hopefully, they are considering their options including Mastodon.

An update on #BlueSky and #AI. They have answered to questions and revealed that their deal with hive.ai specifically forbids the latter from training their models on user data. BlueSky have also updated their TOS to be more clear.
See the linked toot from @growlbeast for more details.
I’d still avoid it personally, their “moderation” is nonexistent and I wouldn’t touch anything backed by cryptobros, but for now this is good news :)
To anyone thinking about joining BlueSky, especially artists: everything you post is used to train generative AI models.
BlueSky uses AI to label content for moderation, and to do that they use a company called thehive.ai. If you look through their privacy policy, you will see that they use all content sent to them to train models for all their services, which include generative AI for both text and images.
Update: meow.social/@FluffyDeveloper/1…
Hive's APIs enable developers to integrate pre-trained AI models that address technically challenging content understanding needs into their applications.Hive AI
it won’t be used by THEM beyond moderation. I don’t think that TOS binds their service providers, but they may have a deal in place to make it so.
You can be sure there is no legal recourse, their TOS is really vague and one team member is not an official communication. Besides, it’s not like other social media companies do things differently.
Bsky does have say in how Hive uses the data Hive gets from Bsky as it's part of the agreement they have with Hive and It would have to be disclosed in our user end ToS.(The ToS states our data is NOT used beyond moderation models, meaning it does not go to the image gen model.)
BSky has been updating their ToS to be more clear about it apparently too.

But the Fediverse cannot be bought. No one controls it. It's a collection of servers, each with its own operators and principles. There is nothing central that Meta can control here...
...except for one: the #protocol.

in reply to Opalium • • •#XMPP. Chrome's Blink. ActiveX. The <font> tag. Even the file types your spreadsheet software uses. These are examples of open protocols (or parts of) that were taken over by a tech giant.
Because it doesn't matter how open the protocol is, if one player simply outshines the rest.
When #Google implemented XMPP into Google Talk, they slowly pulled things their way. Different implementations, protocol changes, etc. Others had no choice but to follow, or lose the biggest share of users.

in reply to Opalium • • •When you're big enough and the vast majority of users are in your "instance", you effectively have control. If you stop playing by the rules, all other players have to either adapt to your new rules to keep federating with you, or split off and lose the vast majority of users, and have your own users move because "there's where everyone is".
And once the "big" player sucks the rest of the network dry, they can just bail and leave its hollowed victim to struggle.

in reply to Opalium • • •Meta's plan for the Fediverse and ActivityPub is likely no different. At first they will play nice and lure in #Mastodon servers and users. Mastodon will see a meteoric rise in activity - but most of it will be from #Threads.
Meta needs Mastodon to seed activity in Threads. By federating, they can show how "active and flourishing" their app already is, with activity from servers showing in their app.
It's much easier to kickstart a platform when you have years worth of content already.

Opalium
in reply to Opalium • • •But as it grows, #Threads will stop playing by the rules. At first just slightly, with different implementations that the Fediverse will have to adapt to. Then bigger changes - perhaps a new "moral" way to monetize content. Mastodon admins will gladly take the help in paying the costs.
And since Threads has all the users, servers will have to either play along and stay federated, or break off and lose most users, plus risk their own migrating to where the action is.
6/🧵
Opalium
in reply to Opalium • • •Eventually #Meta will have the final say when it comes to #ActivityPub. Like how all word processors must support .docx, and all websites are built with Chromium compatibility in mind.
This is how you take over an open protocol.

in reply to Opalium • • •#Meta isn't here to play fair. They're not here to help grow the Fediverse. They want to use it as a kickstart for their own #Threads walled garden, and they will suck the life out of the Fediverse if we won't resist their reach.
They're a cold, heartless, profit-driven #mega #corporation. Not an ally.
We must not fall into this trap. We must not tag along. Meta can't take over if we won't give them the initial footing.
Don't trust them. Don't federate with them.
