May be an unpopular take, but I think the main risk of ML is not that it's good at what it does.

It's actually very bad, worse than humans by far at what it does. But because people collectively believe it is good at stuff, people are focusing so much on "the singularity" or "it replacing [x job]" the real risk continues unhindered.
This is a good example of the true goal of ML: introduce bias and inefficiency in areas where inefficiency is desirable to capitalism.

I'm not sure this concern applies to all applications of ML. As a visually impaired person, I'm fully aware that ML models are much worse than skilled sighted people at describing images, reading text (OCR), and other visual tasks. But I can't always pay a skilled sighted person to do those tasks for me. So is it wrong for me to use the inferior automated solution instead?

On one of the values you mentioned that super AI wouldn't necessarily have, resilience, I think our assumptions of what super-AI would surely be like in that area are informed more by popular science fiction than by what software is actually like. @glyph has mentioned [1] that his father, also a programmer, said that software should be like the Terminator. Maybe the fact that this is an aspirational goal and not present reality should tell us something.

I've been browsing #MeenakshiAmmal's first book again tonight. It is an extended tutorial on Tamil food. You surely learn how to make sambar when you cook 10 different ones in a row, then kuzhambus, then Moar kuzhambus, then ..... and so it goes. I spent time cooking a couple of hundred recipes from this book and am not yet finished. I must get back to it.

Here you go: Pulse Balls Moar Kuzhambu. The balls are made with soaked and ground toor dal and spices, made into balls and steamed. Then simmered in the buttermilk spice stew.

The newly elected president of Argentina, Javier Milei, has described himself as an "anarcho-capitalist." He praises Trump, opposes abortion, and plans to accelerate neoliberal austerity to nightmare proportions.

Anarchists have always opposed capitalism and all politicians. As the Ex-Worker Podcast argued in episode 18, so-called "anarcho"-capitalists take advantage of popular resentment of state power to justify inequalities of wealth. No "liberty" is possible while the rich call all the shots and the vast majority of people struggle to survive.

This is such a good article on how Chinese fonts are designed. Over 10,000 glyphs, and every stroke and radical has to be tweaked by hand. It spotlights the creation of a Chinese font with an Optima feel, which I didn't think was possible until I saw the drafts.

Everything it says about calligraphy is accurate, too, which is not the case in another article I read today.
