Chris, Jairaj, and I wanted to let you know that we’ve heard and have been listening to all the views being expressed about how Substack should think about the presence of fringe voices on the platform (and particularly, in this case, Nazi views). I just want to make it clear that we don’t like Nazis either—we wish no-one held those views. But some people do hold those and other extreme views. Given that, we don't think that censorship (including through demonetizing publications) makes the problem go away—in fact, it makes it worse. We believe that supporting individual rights and civil liberties while subjecting ideas to open discourse is the best way to strip bad ideas of their power. Substack responded to Substackers Against Nazis to say that it does not support Nazi content but will continue to allow it on the platform as long as it doesn’t advocate for violence.

You can download the History of Cartography from the University of Chicago Press, vols. 1-4 and 6 (a total of 8 books).
The project is nearing completion after 40 years (volume 5 is still in preparation).
You do have to download the pdfs by chapter (about 200 total) but do you have anything better to do today?

I can't stop wondering if, to truly meet my goals for the #AccessKit project (github.com/AccessKit/accesskit), it will be necessary to rewrite it as a C library. Wikimedia Russia has been dissolved.

The general assembly of Wikimedia RU decided to disband after it was made clear to the president of Wikimedia RU, who used to work as an assistant professor at Lomonosov Moscow State University, that he was to be classified as a "foreign agent" and had to resign from his post at the university.

Closing Wikimedia RU was done to protect the (now former) members of the non-profit organization that supports Russian Wikipedia.

Update regarding #wayland zero-copy video playback (using hardware planes): with a few small patches it works with #Chromium, both with #vaapi (Intel/AMD) and #v4l2 stateless.

Here a short video using a #rk3399 - the #PINE64 #PinebookPro - playing a 4k 60fps video - only possible with hardware plane offloading. Playback is *almost* smooth already (~50fps), the goal is to catch up with #GStreamer where we get stable 60.

I hope this will all get upstreamed in the coming months.

Hi internets, does anyone know of an alt text generator along the lines of alttext.ai/ with an HTTP API that's free to use without signup, so I can easily integrate it into an open source masto client? It would be great but not strictly necessary if it also doesn't suck.

Failing that, I'd take one where an individual user would have to sign up but it remains free to use indefinitely. Failing that, there's alttext.ai.

I keep hearing a certain sound especially in EDM lately which sounds like a distorted sine wave playing a b5 and G#4 in an arp. Anyone know what that is or where it comes from or why I hear it so much? I tried recreating it. It's not exact but it's close enough.

We tried to simulate 1000 viewers on a #PeerTube video, and then on a livestream. (Note that 99% of twitch livestreams are under 1000 simultaneous views.)

We optimized accordingly... And here are the results: it works!

With a ~20$ server, PeerTube can now support such usecases.
