What's worse?
A) The discovery that your cat seems to be recording his own podcast
B) The realisation that he doesn't consider you worthy of being a guest on it.

Oh boi, do I have thoughts about #nanowrimo. Disclosure; I have written millions of words (most of them technical), I have done #NaNoWriMo a few times, and I have been writing about #AI since the early 90s.
#LLMs are NOT AI. LLMs are vacuums which sort existing data into sets. They do not create anything. Everything they output depends on stolen data. There is no honest LLM.
This year, Nano is sponsored by an LLM company, and after pushback, they said anyone suggesting AI shouldn't be used was "ableist and "classist"....which....whooweee , that's a mighty bold stance.
LLMs are being sued to hell by authors for slurping up all their content. The reason you can "engineer a prompt" by including "in the style of RR Martin" is because the LLM has digested ALL of RRMartin.
Re: "ableism", I'm going to direct you to Lina² neuromatch.social/@lina/113069…, who writes about the issue better than I could. And I want to thank @LinuxAndYarn for coming up with my fave new Nano tag: #NahNoHellNo.

But heck, let's keep letting the richest guy in the world destroy the world. 🤷
I put the work arounds for Steam💩 accessibility on Linux on the audio games forum.
I figured it might be good to have a centralized topic on it. Of course the best usage advice is to avoid it if at all possible, but unfortunately it's the only platform that offers some games.
#AndroidAppRain at apt.izzysoft.de/fdroid today brings you 9 updated, 1 removed and 1 added apps:
- Joplin was removed as updates became unavailable. The FOSS variant without any non-free dependencies is still available at F-Droid.
+ Showly returned with a FOSS build today, to let you track shows & movies
Enjoy your #free #Android #apps with the #IzzyOnDroid repo
Over time, how many lines have been added to the #curl product source code compared to how many lines are still present?
Turns out the factor is about 3. Over time, we have added 3 times the number of lines than currently present.
(a changed line is an added line and one removed)
There's a new bout of "Facebook are listening to you through your microphone to serve targeted ads, no really we have proof now!" discourse, and I'm revisiting my long-term hobby of trying (and failing) to convince people that this isn't happening
It's fascinating to me how hard it is to talk people out of believing this one - there was a podcast episode about exactly this challenge back in 2017 and it's still true today gimletmedia.com/shows/reply-al…
@hobs I think this mostly happens due to people seeing ads for what they're talking about, without realizing the power of coincidences on one hand and the power of search tracking on the other.
The best way I've found to convince nonn-technical people that this isn't true is to make them notice when the same phenomenon happens on linear TV.
You can only do this in-person though, and only when the people in question actually do watch TV and/or listen to the radio.
The main way podcasts grow their audience is through word of mouth so if you like what we do, it would be great if you spread the word to people who might also like our shows.
Anyone who's into Linux, open source, systems administration, cloud, or development should find something they like.

The secret fourth kind is 'we applied a standard theory to their map of every tree and got some suspicious results.'
Unfortunately most of the species tagged trees are mass imported and not mapped by a real mapper.
I try often to map species or genus but there is no good mobile app for this task yet.

I do pity the general population who has to be subjected to that sort of built-in data collection, and all the security and privacy problems it entails. Too bad #Linux is not even a blip on the public consciousness & cultural upbringing.
Jsou produkty a taky software, u kterých si myslím, že se velmi přiblížili k dokonalosti, resp. to co slibují dělají dobře. Za mě to jsou:
* Framework notebook s AMD procesorem - lepší notebook jsem nikdy neměl
* Kindle Paperwhite 5 - za mě překonal papír a pokud vám nevadí knihy v angličtině, je to jak Netflix pro knížky
* Miniflux - self-hosted RSS čtečka, co se ovládá klávesovými zkratkami a umí stáhnout obsah stránky, takže skoro všechno čtete v jednom rozhraní.
* Gitea - vlastní Github

Canada's transport minister to meet with Via Rail after passengers stranded 10 hours in Quebec
cbc.ca/news/canada/montreal/vi…
If the solution doesn't including building and funding passenger rail infrastructure, then you are just incompetent. And we are not talking about a glossy report.
Also the article says:
> Via Rail said it is also investigating after an employee took away a passenger's phone during this time, [...]
Oh that doesn't look good on VIA.
To explain how shitty is the train, Montreal to Quebec I do it faster by car within the speed limit.
Montreal to Ottawa, it's a toss up, but back then I had the car for the final destination in the NCC (the O-train still doesn't cross the river)
in 2003 I did commute 230 km by train. It took 1h platform to platform. It was in France.
Canada's transport minister said he is determined to get to the bottom of a recent train delay that left Via Rail passengers stranded for about 10 hours in Quebec over the long weekend.
You haven't funded it properly for decades you dumb fucking bastard.
they can't fund what they don't own. Which is the gist of the problem. They privatized railroad after bailing them out through a crown corp, and when railroad didn't want to do passenger service anymore, they decide to provide a publicly funded service as a second rate on top of for profit "not-giving-a-fuck" private railroads.
Yes it's a structural policy failure.
Considering the wave of “China's economy will collapse!” videos & articles occurring again at the minute, I am once again showing off my video compiling the last decades of people predicting China's collapse:
The source for this apparent and always occurring collapse is usually one guy who has been claiming this collapse will happen “this decade” for the past 30 years.
I will run a #curl webinar on Thursday.
