As a Windows user (and somebody who's been using 7-zip since 2002), I really don't see any point in .7z over .tar.xz – the size difference is minimal, and 7-zip handles both types anyway.
don't, honestly. Realistically, the sizes don't matter for human downloaders (also not on the server side, most downloads probably are automated, and will probably be .tar.something), so adding more formats doesn't seem worth the effort. ZIP has one, and honestly, one advantage for Windows users: unlike .tar.xz it can be decompressed with board utilities, but what's the point in that? You end up with a source tarball, and then you install a toolchain that *almost certainly* includes tar.
I'm also not convinced at all. Windows 11 now supports all sorts of archive formats out of the box (zip, tar, tar.gz, tar.bz2, tar.xz, tar.zst, 7z, rar). I'd rather look at zstd if you want to add a new (and potentially a better-compressed, fast) format.
manually compressing the .tar file with `xz --extreme --best curl-8.10.1.tar` already reduces the size from 2'766'260 to 2'644'404 bytes. The best 7z compression, `7z a -t7z -m0=lzma -mx=11`, generates roughly the same size: 2'643'431 bytes. So I don't think 7z is needed.
Considering the email, they do have valid points. The file size difference is significant enough, and the 7z file is more user-friendly in comparison to tar.* for some users. However, it does raise concerns about potential side-channel attacks targeting 7-Zip.
Presumably their user base likely prefers user-friendly options like zip. I was comparing the diff between zip and 7z. As for the attack although it migh, not really be practical I was referring to scenarios like the zlib vulnerability.

In her third European final, BALAZOVA made history by securing Slovakia’s first European title. After losing the mixed doubles finals in 2013 and 2020, she finally claimed victory. For MATELOVA, it marked her second European title and a significant win for Czechia, having previously won the mixed doubles title in 2013 (ironically against BALAZOVA).
The final was intense, but the Czech-Slovak pairing always seemed one step ahead.
“This was our best match here. Even we were impressed with our performance in the final. We had never won a medal before at the Europeans, and we’ve been playing together since 2011 in Herning. For sure, the experience of playing finals was on their side. POLCANOVA especially, since she knows how to handle the pressure of the final stage, having been there three times before,” MATELOVA said.
Sometimes, experience can also be a burden, making it harder to carry.
“They were nervous, especially in the opening games, while we were more relaxed. Before the match, we just said, ‘Let’s fight and see what happens.’ We stuck to our game plan,” added MATELOVA.
BALAZOVA shared her thoughts about her nerves before the match.
“Five minutes before the match, I told Hana that I was nervous, but she calmed me down. Even if we lost, we had already achieved a lot by winning a silver medal. So I just wanted to give my best without feeling the pressure of the result. We had a rocky path throughout the entire tournament with a really tough draw. From round one, it was challenging. Also, we weren’t sure if this would be our last European Championship, so we just wanted one medal to say goodbye. But to win gold—it’s unbelievable.”
Reflecting on their challenging path, MATELOVA added, “The first match was the hardest. We faced Charlotte LUTZ and Jia Nan YUAN of France. It couldn’t have been a tougher start, but we managed to beat them 3-0. Strangely, my defeat in singles helped me focus entirely on doubles, and I had plenty of rest between matches, allowing me to prepare in peace. Yesterday’s match against Natalia BAJOR and Tatiana KUKULKOVA was also incredibly difficult. They had a 2-0 lead and two match points,” MATELOVA recalled.
BALAZOVA also shared a personal anecdote: “After I lost in singles to LUTZ, without much of a chance, my fiancé told me, ‘Maybe it’s for the best because you might become the European champion in doubles.’ That idea stuck in my mind, and I thought about it before the final. For me, the toughest match was the quarterfinal against BERGSTROM and KALLBERG, when we finally secured our medal.”

I see Microsoft still haven't fixed the crash in Phone Link when you focus the message list. So, here's my app module to work around this and add some other conveniences. If I could get PhoneLink to reliably send messages and not screw up my Airpods, I'd probably care more, but given about one in ten messages sends now...
@BorrisInABox I have this weird issue with my phone where Bluetooth regularly fails in such a way that my Airpods won't connect and Phone Link won't send messages. My friend doesn't have this problem though and I'm wondering whether it's because I have a braille display paired, even though I don't use it that often with the phone. The only fix I've found is to turn off Bluetooth on the phone and turn it back on. Happens at least once a day.
I started using a dedicated device for PhoneLink, my now deactivated iPhone 13 Mini. Means I can't make calls anymore, but I can receive them. Stuff breaks differently now.
@BorrisInABox Oh oh, yes, I know what you're talking about now. I have calls disabled for Phone Link because it wants to steal calls from my Airpods, but I re-enable calls on demand occasionally if I need it for a specific call, which isn't that often for me. Just in case you don't know, alt+s gets you to settings, which is useful for quickly disabling calls.
Yep. Problem for me is that calls work more reliably than sending messages. And sometimes, new messages won't show up, but I'll get all the pointless notifications like there's no tomorrow. I can turn those off, but then I'd probably get nothing but phone calls. If I turn those off, I'd probably get nothing.
@BorrisInABox Yeah, it's definitely far from perfect. For me, it's also a hell of a lot better than nothing. And I blame Apple for all of this crappiness, for all the difference that makes to no one.
@BorrisInABox Anecdotally, Phone Link seems to be more reliable with messages for me in the last month or two, perhaps iOS 18, a Phone Link update or... complete falsehood that I will discover as such just minutes after I write this. Do with that what you will, probably nothing. :)
@BorrisInABox wait, you can use phone link? I haven't been able to use mine in ages. I can't focus the list of messages inside a conversation. If I do manage to focus it, it usually locks up what ever screen reader.

You sure you linked to the right song? Have you gone through the kind of existential crisis portrayed in that song? I always saw you as being cautiously optimistic about AI, that it can be a useful tool if used well, but not making us redundant.
@forrestbrazeal I don't think I ever actually felt the anger. And I feel kind of guilty about that, because of course some people have decided to stop there and fight against AI, and they have such moral certainty about it.
@matt @forrestbrazeal I've not felt the anger personally, because I've been releasing open source code for 20+ years so I already default to "I want people to be able to reuse my work as much as possible" - but I absolutely understand the people who ARE angry
If I was an artist and someone trained Stable Diffusion on my work without my permission and then started competing with me for commissions that used my own personal style I think I'd feel very differently about this all
@matt @forrestbrazeal I don’t feel like I am stuck in step 4, but I can’t get to step 5 because I do very much believe that (at least in their current incarnation) AI is very much going away. I am worried about the collateral damage that this particular dead tree is going to cause when it smashes into the rest of the ecosystem. E.g.: nvidia currently has a market cap of 11% of GDP, which I do not think is sustainable. But who on earth is going to get a positive ROI on ChatGPT at $20/mo?

About running models locally, I've experimented with that, but large context windows take up lots of RAM, right? Like, isn't it O(n^2) where n is the number of tokens? Or do you not depend on large context windows?
@matt while I agree that the models you are using locally will not go away, I am also skeptical that they will receive much in the way of maintenance once the commercial bubble has burst. Nobody is getting paid when you run a model on your laptop locally, and training them still requires a zillion hours of GPU time and a corpus in the petabytes
@glyph Yeah. Today I went down a rabbit hole looking into what it would take to reproducibly, deterministically build some video assets for a little side project I did. It reminded me of how some hard-core free software folks, particularly the GNU Guix developers, have been working on bootstrapping a whole OS with minimal dependence on existing binaries. We're never getting that for these big models.
