Why is Linux OOM-panic a thing? This strikes me as the thing that it's most important for a system NOT to do.
in reply to Ben Cox

Linux OOM management lately has been... sorry I lack nice words to describe it truth-fully.

I think "Windows like" is kinda close, while still vague.

@cJ the Government should send it pre-filled forms with whatever the fuck they got from the various reports (employer, financial instituation)

I should NOT have to copy my T4 and R1 into a form when they already have that info.

And then log into their system and adjust it.

Like many European countries do.

I pretty much don't have any interest in the Steam Deck (besides of size) for the fact that the APU in there is starting to really show it’s age. Now there are more competition in the handheld with more powerful APUs at the expense of using a little bit more power.

The Radeon 890m really makes the Deck look more out of date as it has performance close to a Radeon 470/570 or a GTX 1060. Not to mention, we are seeing more games that are unplayable on the Deck or won't play well, and the lack of USB 4 support to use an eGPU doesn't help. After all, this is a computer
in a console form factor, and PC games are rarely optimized well.

That said, I would like to see an SoC using ARM with Radeon graphics, it would improve battery life, but x86-64 emulation on ARM64 is another story, but it’s possible given what Asahi Linux can do playing games from Steam using Proton.

Want to build a thriving tech company? Easy! Just ignore user complaints, double down on those privacy-violating features everyone hates, and exploit user data to the max. That's the winning formula, right? 🤡
in reply to nixCraft 🐧

Forget innovation, user experience, and ethical considerations. In today's tech world, the fastest route to the top is questionable practices. Who needs happy users when you have soaring stock prices? It's a proven business model!

Congratulations to the people of Moldova and to you, Maia Sandu.

Got the videos from my aerobatic flight. Unfortunately, they had issues with the intercom audio so you can’t hear me and the pilot. Still getting the video audio described though. I will post it once I have that. The company has offered me a very cheap flight in their other aircraft to make up for it though.

The dominant narrative is that electric vehicles are heavily subsidised. In fact, it's fossil fuel cars that are still heavily subsidised in key European markets. Removing fossil fuel subsidies also means less spending on electric vehicles to compensate for this unjustified advantage.

Excuse me, I don't get it.
I mean benefit-in-kind, depreciation write-offs, and VAT deductions are applicable to both the company EVs and combustion engine company cars. Naming this subsidy is factually incorrect. Using factually incorrect arguments is usually sign there are not enough of valid arguments. I believe this should not be the case, so why?

I didn’t really follow all the news around iOS 18. Can someone tell me about any serious bugs it has if it does, and whether it's worth upgrading now or if I should wait a bit?
in reply to Malia Suhr

@MS26 Oh that doesn't sound good. I guess I'll wait then because my battery is bad enough already lol.
in reply to Mariia Sydoruk

@MS26 I didn’t find this to be the case, but a lot of people do. I wonder if phone model matters.
in reply to Malia Suhr

@MS26 Hmm. Interesting that that’s happening. I tried 18 on a 12 pro max and a second generation SE and it didn’t seem that bad. Did you try all the usual stuff, restarts, redownloading VoiceOver voices, restoring from backup.u
in reply to aaron

@fireborn @MS26 for whatever its worth, if you use voice dream a lot, try killing it from app switcher instead of pausing. It does something weird and doesn't close audio sessions properly. This definitely impacts battery life of your bluetooth headphones, but I wouldn't be surprised if it also affects the phone itself.
in reply to Mikołaj Hołysz

@miki @fireborn No it's not VoiceDream, I use it sometimes but not enough for it to be the problem.
in reply to Mariia Sydoruk

@MS26 I had a 15 pro max, but I did also try 18 on a 12 pro max and second gen SE
in reply to aaron

@fireborn I didn't try all of that, no. The speed issue is better now, it just randomly has moments where it totally freezes up and spazzes out. Mainly in the trivia crack and lyft apps where it never used to do that before.

I can't say I'm happy the way I am. This would be a false statement. However, I am pretty sure that suddenly having sight, having never had it before, would drive me crazy.

@BorrisInABox We talked about that with my wife and daughter, and yes, it would be a tough first time, probably a tough year even when you'll blindfold yourself for most of the time, you'd probably have headaches. My wife told me she would support my endeavor, might it happen one day. But the colorful world that would be available to me afterwards is worth paying this price.

I personally don't need the FSF (Free Software Foundation) or RMS (Richard Stallman) to be a Free Software person that promotes the merits of Software Freedom. Back in the days I was part of the first court case in Germany that established the GPL (v2 at the time) as a valid and enforceable license under German law. We won that case without needing any help from the FSF(E). I have always focused on ideas, never on "heroes" and personification, because people fail. Ideas are bigger than people.

I would like to buy me a good mechanical keyboard, preferably 75percent, because I like those. Anyone know anything good in Europe? Must be pretty good for typing, of course, but also for games. II am tired of my 10Eur cheap USB keyboards, so I'd like to change those to a mechanical one. Also please, something not super expensive. :D Thanks. #keyboards

Controversial suggestion: A future edition of Rust should make no-std the default for new library crates. Safe Rust code that uses core and alloc, no extern references, and other such code as transitive dependencies is, if I'm not mistaken, object-capability-safe. If that's true, then it should also be, by extension, deterministic unless explicitly given references (object capabilities) for sources of non-determinism. It'd be great to have all that by default for most transitive dependencies.
in reply to Matt Campbell

@chadaustin For a large set of libraries, I think interior mutability should be pushed outward, to the caller, as much as possible. I realize that can only go so far, though.

I have used LibreOffice off and on for years, but with increasingly annoying Microsoft Office 365 issues at work I have come back to it full time on MacOS. I have not been disappointed and I really like their privacy options too. If you want a free Office Suite with compatibility to read and write Office formats, this is a great alternative.

@Man2Dev the diff compared to tar.zx seem insignificant. Why does it raise concerns for attacks?

Presumably their user base likely prefers user-friendly options like zip. I was comparing the diff between zip and 7z. As for the attack although it migh, not really be practical I was referring to scenarios like the zlib vulnerability.

🏓 🇨🇿 🇸🇰 🥇 🥇 Historic Gold for MATELOVA and BALAZOVA at the Tabletennis European Championships - In her third European final, BALAZOVA made history by securing Slovakia’s first European title

"Hana MATELOVA of Czechia and Barbora BALAZOVA of Slovakia clinched their first-ever medal together at the Continental Championships. At the LIEBHERR European Championships in Linz, MATELOVA and BALAZOVA triumphed over reigning champions Sofia POLCANOVA of Austria and Bernadette SZOCS of Romania. The bronze medals went to Izabela LUPULESKU and Sabina SURJAN of Serbia, and Natalia BAJOR of Poland and Tatiana KUKULKOVA of Slovakia.

Image/photo

In her third European final, BALAZOVA made history by securing Slovakia’s first European title. After losing the mixed doubles finals in 2013 and 2020, she finally claimed victory. For MATELOVA, it marked her second European title and a significant win for Czechia, having previously won the mixed doubles title in 2013 (ironically against BALAZOVA).

The final was intense, but the Czech-Slovak pairing always seemed one step ahead.

“This was our best match here. Even we were impressed with our performance in the final. We had never won a medal before at the Europeans, and we’ve been playing together since 2011 in Herning. For sure, the experience of playing finals was on their side. POLCANOVA especially, since she knows how to handle the pressure of the final stage, having been there three times before,” MATELOVA said.

Sometimes, experience can also be a burden, making it harder to carry.

“They were nervous, especially in the opening games, while we were more relaxed. Before the match, we just said, ‘Let’s fight and see what happens.’ We stuck to our game plan,” added MATELOVA.

BALAZOVA shared her thoughts about her nerves before the match.

“Five minutes before the match, I told Hana that I was nervous, but she calmed me down. Even if we lost, we had already achieved a lot by winning a silver medal. So I just wanted to give my best without feeling the pressure of the result. We had a rocky path throughout the entire tournament with a really tough draw. From round one, it was challenging. Also, we weren’t sure if this would be our last European Championship, so we just wanted one medal to say goodbye. But to win gold—it’s unbelievable.”

Reflecting on their challenging path, MATELOVA added, “The first match was the hardest. We faced Charlotte LUTZ and Jia Nan YUAN of France. It couldn’t have been a tougher start, but we managed to beat them 3-0. Strangely, my defeat in singles helped me focus entirely on doubles, and I had plenty of rest between matches, allowing me to prepare in peace. Yesterday’s match against Natalia BAJOR and Tatiana KUKULKOVA was also incredibly difficult. They had a 2-0 lead and two match points,” MATELOVA recalled.

BALAZOVA also shared a personal anecdote: “After I lost in singles to LUTZ, without much of a chance, my fiancé told me, ‘Maybe it’s for the best because you might become the European champion in doubles.’ That idea stuck in my mind, and I thought about it before the final. For me, the toughest match was the quarterfinal against BERGSTROM and KALLBERG, when we finally secured our medal.”

Women's Doubles final:

Sofia POLCANOVA, Bernadette SZOCS (Austria, Romania) - Hana MATELOVA, Barbora BALAZOVA (Czechia, Slovakia) 2-3 (7-11, 11-7, 9-11, 11-7, 6-11)

Semi final

Sofia POLCANOVA, Bernadette SZOCS (Austria, Romania) - Izabela LUPULESKU, Sabina SURJAN (Serbia) 3-2 (10-12, 11-4, 11-5, 5-11, 11-3)

Natalia BAJOR, Tatiana KUKULKOVA (Poland, Slovakia) - Hana MATELOVA, Barbora BALAZOVA (Czechia, Slovakia) 2-3 (11-8, 11-5, 12-14, 5-11, 11-13)"
