At last, the USB portal originally authored by @refi64 in 2021, later continued by Georges Stavracas in 2023, and finalized by @hub, has been merged!

The USB portal allows sandboxed formats like Flatpak to access USB devices without poking holes in the sandbox. This is great for security, as accessing USB devices will now need to be explicitly granted by the user.

Now we just need to wait for implementers to implement them in their respective portal implementations, starting with GNOME: gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/xdg-des…

Keep in mind that I've never signed up for Copilot, have disabled Copilot in every way that's possible, and yet I still have a "Copilot Individual Subscription" which comically has "Enabled" as a text field amongst drop-downs for disabling specific features and buttons for signing up for professional services.

One of my all-time favorite spots, the trolley graveyard was a privately owned collection of streetcars on 19 acres of track stretching back into the woods. The owner, my good friend Ed Metka, passed away earlier this year and the cars are being scrapped.

I remember when a thief came into my house through an unlocked windowwhen I was a graduate student in Miami and stole my underwater photography gear. The police almost laughed at me when I suggested that they dust for fingerprints the window that s/he obviously opened*. They told me it wasn't like a cop drama TV show (copaganda really is copaganda) and they wouldn't do it. But when a healthcare CEO is gunned down in Manhattan, they will pick up candy wrappers and water bottles off the street to try to find DNA (much more expensive then fingerprints, and prone to errors if they are using objects on the ground in a crowded city). My claim was denied, but the healthcare CEO's claim will never be denied.

*I'm not trying to equate theft to murder. I'm trying to compare the responses. The cop's response suggested that they rarely dust for fingerprints. Ever. His solution? Monitor Ebay for your photography equipment and let them know if I find it!
