Riflettiamo sulla crescita dell'ecosistema PeerTube
Sette anni fa, PeerTube era principalmente uno strumento con cui gli appassionati di FOSS esperti di tecnologia erano felici di giocare. Poi è diventato popolare tra i creatori di contenuti che volevano uno specchio auto-ospitato dei loro canali YouTube/Twitch; e tra le comunità che volevano creare e regolamentare il loro spazio sicuro (persone sorde, persone queer, ecc.)
Oggigiorno, PeerTube sta riscuotendo un successo crescente tra i creatori di contenuti che pubblicano contenuti originali (o contenuti esclusivi per la loro comunità), media alternativi e istituzioni: college, ministeri dell'istruzione, archivi televisivi e radiofonici nazionali, ecc.
Le strutture pubbliche hanno spesso bisogno di condividere contenuti video senza meccanismi di cattura dell'attenzione o di sfruttamento dei dati.
Per noi si tratta di un nuovo passo nell'evoluzione del pubblico di PeerTube.
Ecco perché quest'anno abbiamo chiesto a La Coopérative des Internets di condurre una ricerca UX approfondita (completa di interviste, test, ecc.) e di aiutarci ad avviare una riprogettazione completa dell'interfaccia. Il nostro obiettivo era migliorare PeerTube in modo che si adattasse meglio alle esigenze di quel nuovo pubblico. Avevamo chiaro che tutto era sul tavolo: colori, vocabolario, layout...
Bene, siamo orgogliosi di rilasciare questa v7 di PeerTube , che getta le basi per una completa riorganizzazione dell'interfaccia.
Anteprima: temi, nuovi colori e vocabolario
Il design di PeerTube, gli schemi di colori, il vocabolario, ecc. sono stati costruiti in sette anni, mentre andavamo avanti, imparando, ricevendo aiuto dalla comunità. Questo nuovo design è stata un'opportunità per fare un passo indietro e ottenere alcune intenzioni dietro l'interfaccia.
Il nuovo tema predefinito Light/beige è più calmo e piacevole alla vista rispetto all'originale Black & orange. Abbiamo anche aggiunto un tema Dark/brown nel core per gli amanti della modalità scura. Entrambi mirano a facilitare la navigazione video.
Creare quei nuovi temi è stata un'opportunità per ripulire e semplificare il modo in cui è codificata l'interfaccia (in particolare: ripulire il CSS, concentrandosi sulle variabili), limitando al contempo le rotture con temi personalizzati preesistenti. Ora è davvero più facile creare nuovi temi per PeerTube e speriamo che condividerete le vostre creazioni!
Abbiamo anche aggiornato il gergo di PeerTube. C'è un motivo per cui ora stiamo usando il termine "piattaforma(e)" per parlare di tutti i server in cui è stato installato PeerTube.
Sì, chiamarli "istanza(i)" è stata la norma nel mondo esperto di tecnologia degli appassionati di activity-pub. Ma, per coloro che non sono abbastanza privilegiati da conoscere il fediverse e il suo protocollo, la parola piattaforma è autoesplicativa e facilita l'inclusione.
Godetevi layout più semplici e pertinenti
Ci sono molte informazioni da visualizzare su qualsiasi pagina di PeerTube. I layout e i menu sono cresciuti organicamente durante sette anni di sviluppo... e avevano bisogno di qualche potatura! Abbiamo rimodellato quei menu e quelle pagine per portare avanti informazioni rilevanti e presentare un modo più intuitivo per scoprire cosa stai cercando.
Ad esempio, i creatori di contenuti accedevano ai loro canali e caricavano video nella loro libreria (dove qualsiasi utente di PeerTube può accedere alle proprie playlist, cronologia, ecc. dei video guardati). Ora in PeerTube v7, c'è una nuova sezione chiamata "spazio video" specifica per le esigenze di chi carica video.
Allo stesso modo, le pagine "admin" per gli amministratori delle piattaforme PeerTube sono state ora separate in una pagina Panoramica (per ottenere maggiori informazioni sugli utenti, sui video ospitati, ecc.), una Moderazione (per gestire abusi, blocchi, registrazioni) e una Impostazioni (per accedere a configurazioni, runner, ecc.).
Le diverse pagine che presentavano i video sulla piattaforma PeerTube (Aggiunti di recente, Video locali, Di tendenza) sono state unite in una pagina "Sfoglia video" , che include filtri rapidi per visualizzare le stesse selezioni di contenuti in modo più diretto.
Lo stesso intento ha guidato il nuovo layout della pagina "Scopri video": ci auguriamo che possa dare spunti agli utenti curiosi.
Ovviamente, la barra di sinistra e i menu dell'intestazione sono stati riorganizzati per riflettere tali modifiche e rendere la navigazione ancora più intuitiva. Ora puoi accedere alle impostazioni del tuo account e alle notifiche dal menu dell'intestazione , come è consuetudine su altri siti web.
Visualizzazione di informazioni rilevanti per mostrare la diversità dei video
Uno dei commenti più frequenti dei nuovi utenti è stato che la vecchia interfaccia era confusa, ovvero era difficile per un utente capire dove si trovava e da dove provenivano i video.
Ecco perché, in PeerTube v7, abbiamo aggiunto più modi per consentire ai proprietari di piattaforme di personalizzare e identificare le proprie piattaforme : aggiungere facilmente un banner (utilizzato nelle pagine, nell'esplorazione delle app mobili e nel nostro motore di ricerca SepiaSearch ) e un'icona della piattaforma (utilizzata dall'applicazione mobile). Inoltre, il nome e la descrizione della loro piattaforma vengono ora visualizzati agli utenti non registrati nel menu di sinistra.
Abbiamo anche cambiato il modo in cui le miniature dei video appaiono in tutte le pagine che elencano i video . Gli avatar dei canali sono sempre visualizzati, quindi è più facile identificare i creatori, i titoli sono evidenziati, la data e il numero di visualizzazioni del video sono presenti ma attenuati. Queste modifiche rendono le pagine che elencano i video più facili da leggere e facilitano l'identificazione del video che vuoi guardare.
Accessibilità in prima linea
La riprogettazione è stata anche l'occasione per dare priorità all'accessibilità dell'interfaccia (per le persone con disabilità). Nel 2023, abbiamo preparato il codice e lavorato su ciò che sapevamo ... così l'audit di accessibilità completo pianificato per il 2024 (grazie al consorzio NGI Entrust) avrebbe portato quanti più miglioramenti nuovi e dettagliati possibili.
Grazie all'audit, abbiamo migliorato moltissimi aspetti : abbiamo sistemato i contrasti e i temi dei colori, la barra di avanzamento, diversi componenti e vari problemi con lo screen reader. Abbiamo aggiunto etichette mancanti sugli elementi interattivi, link "salta menu", sottolineatura dei link. Abbiamo anche migliorato la navigazione tramite tastiera e reimplementato componenti di una dipendenza non accessibile.
Crediamo sinceramente che PeerTube abbia risolto i problemi di accessibilità e dovrebbe essere all'altezza degli standard ... ma sappiamo, ora, che c'è sempre spazio per miglioramenti e per imparare direttamente da chi è interessato .
Modifica dei sottotitoli, promozione dei video e molto altro ancora...
Con il nuovissimo strumento di transcodifica remota che abbiamo introdotto l'anno scorso, ottenere una trascrizione o sottotitoli per il tuo video è più facile che mai. Ma lo strumento di modifica dei sottotitoli era... ehm... diciamo "barebone". Ora stiamo introducendo una nuova modalità che rende la modifica dei sottotitoli davvero comoda .
Abbiamo accolto e integrato a monte un contributo della comunità su SEO (ottimizzazione per i motori di ricerca), per aiutare a promuovere i contenuti ospitati da PeerTube sui motori di ricerca. Un avatar della piattaforma ora appare nei tag opengraph, gli account e i canali vuoti sono nascosti dalla mappa del sito, mentre ora sono presenti tag video aggiuntivi.
Infine, PeerTube è stato tradotto in slovacco .
Vorremmo davvero prenderci del tempo per ringraziare la comunità che contribuisce alle traduzioni di PeerTube: non avremmo mai pensato che un giorno il nostro software sarebbe stato disponibile in più di 38 lingue.

@erion haha, ironic :) But it's sadly in a similar state as Brailab, in that we have a DLL that's closed-state compiled who-knows-when we can use since it's Win32. @rommix0 put a lot of work in exporting the functions and getting it to work in his lightweight reader tool but I doubt we'll ever get it cross-platform.
@rommix0 @erion @datajake1999 I bet it was a surprise to wake up and have a bunch of sudden contact with members of the blind community rapidly increase on each one :D Not many would have taken it as in well of a stride as you did with interaction! Many would be like, "huh? They can use computers?" xD

@ChrisDuffley the last versions should have it way less (for me it still hasn't happened more than twice in about an 8 hour period) but I don't think so, the DLL is just too old to handle interruptions mid-chunks
I figured that. How sad, but understandable obviously given that it's quite an old one there. It's more like when I first enter File Explorer for instance when I get that since it's trying to say, literally: Dropbox - File Explorer. Items view list. BestSpeak.nvda-addon 1 of 2935.
what makes it infinitely tricky to point down is that it depends on sound cards people are using, and potentially rate setting too - if the sound card is slower at buffering audio or they're using it slower, it'll probably be more likely to do the static (although having it on 2 bluetooth headphones was better than with my Realtek with enhancements on, so it's just odd. Once I disabled them the speaker got better, so getting rid of any add-ons which generate sounds or enhancements you have on can help)
Yeah, they got it perfect on the BrailleNote. But also that's because it was older tech and it worked perfectly in that day and age. But yeah, that's an interesting observation there...
@ChrisDuffley @TomGrant91 sometimes these days I've found they put the enhancements in the "advanced" tab rather than giving it an "enhancements" tab since Realtek wants you to use its inaccessible control panel exclusively, so it's called "signal enhancements" in the advanced tab of the card (mmsys.cpl from run dialog will get you to the old sound panel)
@ChrisDuffley to be exact, it's not just Bestspeech that's responsive now, even IBMTTS has no lag whatsoever. I didn't actually see any difference with enhancements on or off because I have great HP speakers, the only decent speakers out there to be honest.

The runs are super fast, there's a ton of content to unlock (which you can just skip if you like), not to mention that the source can be tinkered with due to the nature of the engine and the dev being awesome for not compiling it into Lua bytecode, so technically you could convert it to a platformer for personal use, though no idea how that would work, maybe complete a platformer level to obtain a card instead of just buying it haha.

Today's Christmas audio post to bring joy to everyone…except probably not! In 1983 someone wrote a program for a version of BASIC used on IBM PC and compatible computers. This program could play ten Christmas songs through the built-in PC speaker using the Play statement. While this just allows a single note at a time, if programmed correctly, it can still sound good…but this particular version of Jingle Bells was not programmed correctly, to say the least!
As I suspect, my conception of what a proper instrumental arrangement of "Jingle Bells" ought to sound like was set by the version I grew up with in Diversi-Tune, a MIDI music program for the Apple IIGS. It's in the key of F, and I distinctly remember imitating the walking bass line on the piano, and being told by some teacher that it was called a walking bass line. Last month, there was an organised walk around Gent Zuid, aimed at adding surveillance cameras to #OpenStreetMap with @MapComplete. This map of the area shows the high number of cameras in this area alone (this is zoom level 18!), but also, that they're now mapped, allowing anyone to check where there's cameras with a reasonable degree of accuracy 🥰

@rommix0 ooh, not anymore - it's long lost over multiple hard drive migrations. Perhaps @erion may know though. Would be good to have it again just to understand any speech parameters I've been missing.
@rommix0 @erion yeah, the dll is there :) And the add-on should give a fairly good rough idea of how the TTS_StartSay function works to send speech to, it doesn't require piping the text to a hidden window thread so a lot simpler to get going.
@rommix0 @erion think the only downside of that TTS is just the low-quality of the speech samples (think it's not even 11K but 8K) although the .bin files are probably direct 1:1 rom dumps of the hardware chip's that was producing it so probably not much to be done. What makes it unique is that it phonetically pronounces letters, rather than as their full-letter counterparts, so you can get it to beatbox and do other very cool sounds quickly :D ahaha
@rommix0 @erion I think I'm still astounded by the Resilience of some of these engines, the Brailab one we (Read: Erion) first made in like 2013 or 2014. I was still just barely out of college so in ten years time have just lost the source. Might be able to get in touch with the other contributor (áron) who also had it. Don't think we could ever release it since as I recall at the time BME-TMIT gave it to us for private-use only, though may be wrong on this.
@TomGrant91 @rommix0 @erion if someone could pull that off, I'd be super amazed. It would require a lot of tracks and mixing of them and normalizations, but now that we have access to them I guess there's never been a better time to create a speech synthesis choir with a bunch of parts.

@rommix0 @TomGrant91 @erion yeah, I remember you could run this one - Homelab preceded Brailab, and was a full speaking computer system prior to them just releasing the synthesizer component. Nice find though, I like that this has rom dumps from several generations so that may be something fun to play around with.
The Brailab DLL is not from Brailab CD, it's from the original hardware, just partially rewritten to compile and run on Windows. When I was working on translating NVDA and of course exposing Hungarian blind people to it, we made an agreement through a Hungarian organisation with the original developer to make it available for Hungarian NVDA users. We also needed some extra functionality for indexing, as well as playing wav files, which would have replaced the synth's spelling feature.
Implementing this was not quite feasible, but they did give us the source code, should we wish to do this ourselves. About a year later, Vocaliser became available and due to its more natural speech, Brailab was mostly forgotten. Some people who grew up using the hardware or later the CD variant still use the addon today. They have also developed an overlay for Android which uses Brailab as its synth.
I am legally bound by this agreement, so I am unfortunately unable to disclose the source code, sorry.
lol, especially with how vocalizer for the longest time struggled with Hungarian words that had double S's (like 'kissebb" for littleest) - would always say it as an sz. It's a bit of a shame really because I think having Profivox (which of course the blind community cracked out of JAWS anyway) is far better than Vocalizer as it's also home-made, but of course by that time JAWS had exclusivity on it so NVDA was stuck with the inferior TTS option. (There was also Multivox, but its voice is not one I particularly miss.) But yeah, figured we couldn't distribute that source. I had gone into maintaining the driver because nobody in Hungary cared about it. I even paid Tyler like $50 at one point to add Indexing for me.
I had more struggles, small short i or long í it's a pain! Especially if you're trying to study the language. Might I add, with 0 success, I still need a teacher. Hopeless me, people want ridiculous prices. Anyway, Vocalizer for Bulgarian also sucks balls. Absolutely awful, disgusting!
Espeak is better than Vocalizer in these two languages. Period. You can't argue with me. Grins evilly, but Bulgarian also has neural voices which suck when trying to read English. Speechlab from when I was born is the best. And because there aren't other blind Bulgarians anywhere I've seen on fedi, I can't get kicked in the replies for choosing the older speech. Also have signed NDA with the blind union here, and the voice contains my data, I initially had to activate it with, otherwise I could give you the thing to play with, although I have no source code, so enjoy disassembling it. :D
Anyway, me and understanding of tts isn't the best. But you all get a hug. Because I decided so. Also free, a word I can't spell in English free of illnesses, and virtual. Enjoy! Ah, Multivox was the first Hungarian synth that everyone used with Jaws before it was translated, there was no eSpeak, only Brailab, WinTalker Voice and Multivox. Then Profivox came, which was licensed exclusively for Jaws, and the underrated SpeakBoard hich was sold even in supermarkets on CD, then Vocalizer, which is everywhere now.
It has loads of issues, Nuance clearly did not test it, nor listened when lots or developers (including myself) complained. They have added horrible pronunciation rules that cause common words to be mispronounced and there's only a partial fix. But I digress.
There was no manual that I know of, we just got a zip file with the source dump and a few lines on how to compile it. It had 7 various parameters to my knowledge: rate, volume, pitch, emphasis, spelling, weird mode (this just modified formants I believe), and another one I am unable to recall at the moment. Most of these were implemented in the NVDA addon, the useful ones anyway.
I might be able to find the source, so please let me know if you need me to look up anything.
Let's. Just stick to English. And I also don't want to correct every Bulgarian sentence. Laughs. I'm pretty honest, but that's like giving fire to my OCD. The more incorrect something of a language I know and I'm fluent is, the worse I am. But I digress from our TTS subject. So, we have neural engine synths for Bulgarian, but you can get them only if you're a member of the blind union here, and the Gergana you mentioned, that's also Speechlab, is super natural with the neural engine thing.
I have somewhere an installer of this neural thing. Despite it being available from the blind union, somebody did an illegal share *smiles*. Btw, i am member of the Bezmishka mailing list.
If you have an ID number, a full name and an activation code or managed to crack it, good for you. If you have two voices, I think you might have the latest version. If someone managed to make this crap neural tts faster, that would be great. But there's this thing, Bulgarians are assholes, they don't want to give out source codes.
I wish we could get Profivox neural somehow, I heard that's becoming a thing but beyond some web demos haven't seen much. Ah well. Maybe some day, for now I still don't mind the Hungarian Wintalker voice which, miracles, runs on Win11 :D
oh yeah! So far the RHVoice Katalin is actually fairly good, except when it says the letter F her voice cracks horribly, but I mean in general I like that one over the other 2 Piper-based ones right now up on rhvoice.hu xD
I'd say it has more problems with the letter S. But that's understandable, all these problems are because of the database itself. You should have heard how the original one sounds like. It's horrible.
This cracking will be fixed when i fix the pboblematic sentences in dataset. I need to grab somewhere the exception words in Hungarian. Maybe you can help me? thinks like cukroszacskó and stuff.
And yeah, Profivox is the best thing we've ever had, withthe exception of not supporting other languages, such as russian for example. I would need both hungarian and russian, that's why I wanted RHVoice to be created at the first place.
Hmm, so would that need recordings or is it phonetic adjustments you're more after on them? For sure interesting! I think we do have the best chance with RHVoice as far as a solid cross-platform one, at least one which would well rival the competition like Vocalizer and be better than it.

This is weird, I'm not getting the weird artifacting with Bestspeak all the time, but I was somehow able to almost consistantly reproduce it when going between the desktop and the Tweesecake window, I wonder what you guys think @Tamasg and @rommix0
that's an odd one! It might be a conflict with another add-on (sounds like you have the earcons one, haven't tested it alongside it admitedly) - it may be that the interruption gets locked mid-chunk while the audio plays, or at the very least it's causing some delay to bstShutup and invalidating the handle. I think it's interesting because for 90% of people it's working fine, now there's just that last 10% of random glitches and quirks that some are still getting here and there but I'm having a much harder time to repro in my environment. (would be interesting if you can get it back and if so, whether disabling that add-on and restarting would cause it.)
Yeah, I use Navigation sounds, so it could be that, maybe try installing that addon or something idk, its very strange, as it was also throwing a fit when in the live chat of a friend's YouTube stream, clickable then random sounds, and at one point button id icon beep *NVDA reboots itself*
