one thing that kind of bothers me about this post is that it feels like on some level I "should" be explaining what a login shell is (to explain the diff between .bashrc and .bash_profile) jvns.ca/blog/2025/02/13/how-to…

but if I try it always feels like it descends into drawing some kind of diagram like this and it just doesn't feel worth it, like who has time for that (source: blog.flowblok.id.au/2013-02/sh…)

Wrote up my first impressions of the new GPT-4.5 - it's quite slow, VERY expensive and doesn't appear to be a notable leap forward from GPT-4o or o3-mini simonwillison.net/2025/Feb/27/…

This unified meetings app is a cool idea. You basically use it to store your meeting links, so you don't have to scroll your email for it. If you have a lot of meetings you will probably find this useful. apps.apple.com/us/app/perspect…

Listen, it feels impossible that these MAGA assholes would ever change their minds, and yeah some never will...

BUT

I was a Republican asshole once, so was my brother, so was my husband, so were many of my friends. In fact, judging from the people I've met here, many of you grew up in oppressive Conservative/Religious environments, but you changed too. It is possible, we have a fight coming up, and we are going to need as many people as we can get.

Learning how to talk to each other is going to be important.

The House GOP just passed a draconian budget resolution by the slimmest of margins, and if you’ve seen Republican misinformation since the vote, you might think it’s already law. But here’s the truth: this is just a blueprint, not a final bill. And that means there’s still time to fight back against proposed Medicaid cuts and tax breaks for the ultra-wealthy. Here’s what you need to know. 👉 thinkbigpicture.substack.com/p…

In case you missed it, the Fediverse's livestreaming platform OwnCast has official apps:

You don't have to use these though, all of OwnCast's features are available through the web.

TIL your iPhone has a built-in QR code for your WiFi network:

- Fire up your iPhone's "Passwords" app
- Tap "Wi-Fi" (on the front page)
- Tap your WiFi network
- Tap "Show Network QR Code"

Have someone scan the QR code to instantly log on to your network. No password required.

Cool beans.

That activity gave us increased insight into the most prolific vulns being exploited, w/far more malicious sources being identified daily. We've also reduced the ⏱️ to threat intel value to minutes vs ~hour (so high-fidelity blocklists provide nigh instant coverage if SOC teams use them).

At @couchdb we take data safety extreeeeemly serious.

A few weeks ago, we had to make sure we were not susceptible to a particularly gnarly race condition that could lead to catastrophic data loss.

We were not (😮‍💨), but to make sure we had to go back to the very foundations any database is built on: basic syscalls, a filesystem, process crashes and (lying) storage devices.

Come with me on a journey of rediscovering what it means to safely store data: neighbourhood.ie/blog/2025/02/…

This is insane to me. I'm biased, though. Punctuation and spelling matter inherantly to me, but I also need them to be correct so speech can give me the best version of a message. I can also add punctuation more easily thanks to braille screen input, and can hear spelling mistakes I make more easily thanks to speech feedback. I'll continue writing the most grammatically correct posts and texts I can, even if doing so is lame.
