Après avoir rempli les trouzemille pages de dossier, identifié le bon interlocuteur et renvoyé le tout, on reçoit des mois plus tard un courrier physique demandant d'importer une photo d'identité sur un site Web, avec un identifiant de 16 chiffres et un mdp de 12 caractères alphanumériques.
La photo scannée doit faire moins de 2 Mo (l'aide préconise d'utilise Paint pour recadrer) et à la fin, la photo est affichée « non valide » sans spécifier pourquoi. J'ai rogné de quelques pixels et ça a été accepté 🤷♀️
Excusez-moi, c'est vraiment pas pour vous agacer, mais n'aurait-il pas été beaucoup plus simple d'amener votre papa pour le faire photographier à un photomaton ? J'ai téléversé une e-photo scannée et ça a passé sans aucun problème. Mais la paperasse… oui, c'est vraiment trop « commode » quand on est aveugle comme moi.

Energy conservation was huge when i was growing up. Now it's "go ahead and use enough electricity to power a house for a month so you can make a video of a three eyed cat playing a banjo"

If you have a static website, it should be able to scale from 0 to "it's the first Google result for the question which is currently on 'Who wants to be a Millionaire' with no hitch."
It's not hard. It's a problem we've solved a few dozen times by this point, and the solutions are free and widely available.
You just have to stop hosting it on an old PowerPC Mac behind your carefully-crafted router running OpenBSD 4.
What prompted this? I think we should encourage *more* self-hosting on home servers, less use of centralized providers. And I consider CDNs a form of centralization, since while the network is distributed, it still represents an accumulation of resources and power under one company. Maybe being able to handle a spike in traffic that most websites never see isn't the most important consideration.
And yes, to address your hyperbolic self-hosting description, we should also consider more creative use of old hardware and less popular operating systems. Even running OpenBSD 4 on the router might not be so bad if there are no security holes affecting that specific configuration.

I'm not a fan of decentralization for decentralization's sake. With a website like that, you can decentralize at the domain level. As long as your hosting provider doesn't control your domain and you have the ability to move your content somewhere else, there isn't much evil that the provider can do.
Has a self-hosted *static* website actually succumbed to the HN hug of death? If so, it would be useful to analyze that site's setup and why it couldn't keep up with the load.
@matt Also, what the pro-decentralization folks are completely ignoring is that there are a lot of free speech / human rights arguments in favor of centralization.
No single server will withstand the might of the Chinese government if they decide to launch a DeDoS attack. Cloudflare? No problem, they'll even do it for free.
That comes at the expense of giving Cloudflare itself too much power, though. And in the current US regime, I might be more concerned about what Cloudflare, a US company, can do to my site than what the Chinese government can do to it.
@matt Whatever Cloudflare does to your site, you can always redirect your DNS records away from it. The ability to migrate matters (and this is where Mastodon fails catastrophically).
Random thought: there needs to be a service where blind folks can ask a sighted person to do something on the internet that isn't accessible, but is embarrasing as fuck. Need to verify yourself on Fetlife because of age ID issues? Need to take a picture of something medical to send to your doctor? How about getting a description for a sex toy picture that the AI describers say they won't touch?
BeMyEyes should do this. They're also the only org with enough connections and standing to start a discussion about AI discrimination in terms of sensitive things the AI won't describe for the blind.
I have been up more or less for the past 24 hours straight trying to update my #Friendica instance, only to have a break several times to the point of even having the database messed up and needing to get my hosting provider to do a database import for me, what keeps happening is every time I do the update even though I have my customized theme completely renamed the update removes my top navbar so I lose all functionality to post or do anything it's very annoying I can't update because it breaks and when I try to import my custom theme over the broken it does not fix it I'm not sure what @Friendica Support has done to the RC to cause this and I wish I knew so I could update but I can't.
@Michael 🇺🇦 everything's been changed I've got everything back the way I had it after getting the host server tech support to re-import my working database because I lack root privilege, and restored all my other files to the backup I did before all this catastrophe, whatever has changed in RC alters customize themes that are saved in a different name and have no name hook to the original so I had frio and I made a few changes that I liked to it that I was able to do and I saved everything and changed in every single file in that theme folder to frio_custom but every single time I do get pull and go through all the steps to update I lose the nav I have no way of composing no way of doing anything I have the very top bar but not the main nav bar and then it got so messed up that it screwed the database up and I couldn't even roll back on git, basically had to do a full-on surgical transplant of everything and I just going to stay on the latest development and not move up ever unless somehow I ended up meeting somebody that's remotely close to me that is very familiar with this and can walk me through it personally because everything I have read and everything I have known to do just breaks it it's kind of ironic it's kind of a straightforward instance yet mine is really apparently different. Whatever Friendica has done and her latest updates for RC it totally negates your customizations and what makes it worse is I can't use the new frio because it also is missing the top nap bar now just for information my local config is set to frio custom but when I try to also and configuration on the database set it to free of custom the whole site breaks I have to change on a database on config to just frio, anyways I have everything working at the moment so I guess I'm just going to give up on trying to update I was going to try to create a local instance on my computer to keep battling it and see if I can't figure it out so that I can push it to my server but it appears that my computer can't handle setting up a home instance so for now I'm just stuck, last development stage oh well I still like it.

Concerning the problem: I still don't understand how you were able to do something to your database. Nonetheless: When you try to update the next time, please be sure that you don't apply your changes immediately and even more important: You have to clear your browser cache to make sure that you don't use old code.
After that is done, you can try to apply your changes step by step while in parallel checking if everything still works.
@Michael 🇺🇦 the entire updates where via ssh git pull, I committed my changes and even tried to cherry pick my commits, every time upgrading from Friendica 'Interrupted Fern' 2025.02-dev - 1583 to the new RC, I lost the nav bar both in stock frio and my custom frio, and as to the database I have no clue what went wrong, never could figure that one out, anyways, I guess I am going to just stay with the version I have from now on, as i really dont have a way nor the resources to set up a test instance to work the kinks out and have something of value to report.

📣THREAD: It’s surprising to me that so many people were surprised to learn that Signal runs partly on AWS (something we can do because we use encryption to make sure no one but you–not AWS, not Signal, not anyone–can access your comms).
Concerning, bc it indicates that the extent of the concentration of power in the hands of a few hyperscalers is way less widely understood than I’d assumed. Which bodes poorly for our ability to craft reality-based strategies capable of contesting this concentration & solving the real problem. 2/
The question isn’t "why does Signal use AWS?" It’s to look at the infrastructural requirements of any global, real-time, mass comms platform and ask how it is that we got to a place where there’s no realistic alternative to AWS and the other hyperscalers. 3/
Running a low-latency platform for instant comms capable of carrying millions of concurrent audio/video calls requires a pre-built, planet-spanning network of compute, storage and edge presence that requires constant maintenance, significant electricity and persistent attention and monitoring. 4/
Instant messaging demands near-zero latency. Voice and video in particular require complex global signaling & regional relays to manage jitter and packet loss. These are things that AWS, Azure, and GCP provide at global scale that, practically speaking, others (in the western context) don’t. 5/
This isn't ‘'renting a server.' It's leasing access to a whole sprawling, capital-intensive, technically-capable system that must be just as available in Cairo as in Capetown, just as functional in Bangkok as Berlin. Particularly given the high stakes use cases of many who rely on Signal. 6/
Such infrastructure costs billions and billions of dollars to provision and maintain, and it’s highly depreciable. In the case of the hyperscalers, the staggering cost is cross-subsidized by other businesses–themselves also massive platforms with significant lockin. 7/
Meaning that infrastructure like AWS is not something that Signal, or almost anyone else, could afford to just “spin up.” Which is why nearly everyone that manages a real-time service–from Signal, to X, to Palantir, to Mastodon–rely at least in part on services provisioned by these companies. 8/
But even if Signal had the billions needed to recreate AWS, it’s not just about money. The talent to run these systems is rare & concentrated. The expertise, the tooling, the playbooks, the very language of modern SRE came out of these hyperscalers, and is now synonymous with 'the cloud.' 9/
o, yes, Signal runs on AWS. It also runs on your phone, which runs on iOS (Apple) or Android (Google). And on Dekstop, via Windows (Microsoft). Each of these presents similar dependencies on large entrenched tech companies, and concomitant barriers and risks. 10/
In short, the problem here is not that Signal ‘chose’ to run on AWS. The problem is the concentration of power in the infrastructure space that means there isn’t really another choice: the entire stack, practically speaking, is owned by 3-4 players. 11/
So, Signal does what we can to provide a service w integrity in the concentrated ecosystem we're working in. We protect your comms w end-to-end encryption, so that we can use AWS and others as a highway across which to send Signal data in ways that don’t let AWS, or anyone else, gain access. 12/
To conclude: my silver lining hope is that AWS going down can be a learning moment, in which the risks of concentrating the nervous system of our world in the hands of a few players become very clear. And that this can help us craft ways of undoing this concentration and creating real choice ❤️ 13/

With respect Meredith, i’m talking about decentralized protocols and their capability to not depend so heavily on the service providers you’re arguing for. Tor Project has shown how possible it is (i used to work there, and it’s spelled Tor not TOR).
I listened to Moxie’s aversions to decentralization for years. That’s what I keep seeing now, with posts like these. I also understand the value of huge cloud providers, I’ve worked for many companies who use them, and have worked for them, and I understand why you depend on them and how important that is to a high quality service. Thank you for all that you all do.
But what conversations does Signal Foundation actually have on the topics of resiliency through decentralization? How much money could you save by allowing the community to take on aspects of the network? How much resiliency and trust could be gained, without losing performance?
@davep @yawnbox Regarding Tor: instant messaging (if you stretch "instant" to cover several seconds which is acceptable in practice) have been successfully ran over Tor and other distributed settings.
Regarding video not relying on a centralized infra: Skype during its Kazaa-/pre-Microsoft- era and its "Super nodes" has been a widely successful example of a video calling software that doesn't rely that much on centralisation (but of course with a completely different security model)

I actually appreciate Signal, e.g., unlike the above example of Skype, it is tolerating 3rd party open source clients, so people like me who neither run Android nor iOS on the smartphone can still communicate with friends).

I would recommend if you happen to run SailfishOS on your phone and if you too are mostly interested in messaging.

@daniel Even _IF_ it were possible to create a black box version of "distributed Signal mesh node in a box" that you could run in your basement to help make Signal more tolerant - I mean with enough $ and willpower Im sure it could be done - there's still the question of: if you don't control physical access to the node, there's still potential for attack regardless of how much encryption and protection. Would you ever be able to trust it completely?

A common AI slop pattern in #curl reports we see is when the AI finds an internal function somewhere in libcurl and then generates a POC for the user that uses this internal function in a way that makes it misbehave/crash. But internally we don't use the function like that, and wouldn't, because then it fails.
It's obvious why the AI bug finders are up in arms over this. If they globber up this code and re-uses it in other code bases there WILL be problems there!
So, by not writing all of your internal functions as if they were external, you're making the AI coding tools less useful.
You have this "when all you have is a hammer, everything is a nail" idiom .... using AI for security research to find issues is more like a misunderstood reversed approach ...

@nobletrout We have *thousands* of internal functions, are you seriously suggesting we should add dummy code in all of them to handle being called with all sorts of rubbish input just because people and AIs are stupid? Sounds like an even bigger time waste than all the AI reports...
Hackerone need to enforce a rule that bug hunters should declare up front which reports are AI with failing to do so carrying severe consequences. Maintainers can then get their own AI to deal with the reports. 😂
