Hey fellow #BlindMastodon users! I'm looking for recommendations on two types of writing tools for Windows:

1. Accessible text expanders
2. Word prediction software

I use both #JAWS and #NVDA screen readers. I tried Espanso (an open-source text expander), but it didn't work well with NVDA. I also tested Lightkey for word prediction, but it didn't seem accessible.

As an #ActuallyAutistic person, word prediction would really help with my autism-related communication challenges.

Have you found any text expanders or word prediction tools that work well with screen readers? What has your experience been like? I'd love to hear your recommendations and thoughts!

Some of us Internet Weirdos are doing a survey on Neurodivergence and Education.

If you are in school, college, university or whatnot, or have been in the last five years, could you spend a few minutes filling in this out for us?

We're writing guides for educators and learners and the more input we have, the better we'll be.

Appreciated folx!

For years, we used to explain to folks that we experienced a phonological delay in processing speech or sounds, and that it was likely linked to us being autistic.

We only later worked out that we're actually AuDHD (inattentive ADHD and autistic) and that there's an actual medical term for this: auditory processing disorder.

If you're some flavour of neurospicy, you might have it too without realising. Common signs and symptoms include:

  • speaking louder or softer than is situationally appropriate;
  • difficulty remembering lists or sequences;
  • needing words or sentences to be repeated;
  • impaired ability to memorize information learned by listening;
  • interpreting words too literally;
  • needing assistance to hear clearly in noisy environments;
  • relying on accommodation and modification strategies;
  • finding or requesting a quiet work space away from others;
  • requesting written material when attending oral presentations; and
  • asking for directions to be given one step at a time.

It heavily overlaps with ADHD and autism :ADHD_Butterfly::AutismSymbol:

Hope this is helpful to someone :NeurodiversitySymbol:

For World Autism Awareness Day, we want to highlight Open Autism, a group dedicated to developing open source software specifically for autistic users and the people who support them.

Many of us know how important it is to have free and open source options for our technology needs, and autistic needs are no different.

Just learned about this really cool theme park in Texas specifically designed for kids with disabilities. Apparently this guy was having tons of trouble finding a theme park able to accommodate his daughter Morgan who has multiple disabilities. Eventually, he soled his successful business and spent $50,000,000 to build his own.
It's got 25 different attractions, tons of events, thousands of positive reviews ETC.
