Every year I do an activity on the fugitive slave law & civil disobedience. We talk about whether protest is worthwhile and when, if ever, it's ok to break the law to stand for moral principles.

In past years, most students were pretty cynical & said protest wasn't helpful; they wouldn't risk their own safety and security for civil disobedience. Today, numerous students said that the risk to the country of not protesting for what is right was greater than the personal risk of getting arrested.

What has changed, beyond the random mix of students? My best guess is that the frequency of protests, esp by young people, has an influence, as does the very real sense in their generation that there are serious and urgent problems in the world. That said, when I asked how many of them had ever engaged in protest or civil disobedience, only 3/23 had.

Happy Birthday to Walter Rodney, who was born #OTD in Guyana in 1942! After becoming a professor in Jamaica, he was barred from the country for his communist views, a decision which caused riots in his support. He later taught and lectured around the world, especially in Tanzania. His book “How Europe Underdeveloped Africa” made him a towering figure in anti-colonial circles.

Physicist John Tyndall is often credited with discovering the greenhouse effect, which he wrote about in 1859.

But female scientist Eunice Foote published a paper - 3 years earlier - demonstrating how atmospheric water vapor & CO2 affected solar heating. She theorized that heat trapping gases in Earth’s atmosphere warm its #climate.

Tyndall was widely read. And Foote, being a woman, wasn't even permitted to present her own work. climate.gov/news-features/feat… #history #science #ClimateChange

I remember seeing a presentation about municipal #history & how at one point roads were all privately maintained.

We do have toll roads still, but I think we can all agree that most roads are maintained by our taxes.

Synth genius Wendy Carlos studied physics & #music at Brown & Columbia. She helped develop the first Moog synthesizer & her 1968 classical album Switched-On Bach went platinum. She brought music & tech together & composed soundtracks for A Clockwork Orange, The Shining, Tron & more.

Carlos was assigned male at birth & transitioned to female. Unfortunately, many journalists focus more on her gender than her accomplishments that changed music forever. wendycarlos.com #history

I've been collecting interesting examples of information organisation in history, focusing on non-Western civilisations. I came across this example of an ancient Mesopotamian spreadsheet! It records wages paid to temple workers in 1295 BCE.

In the 13th century a 7 year old schoolboy named Onfim doodled on his birch bark. He drew himself as a warrior & as “a wild beast” and scribbled a greeting to his friend Daniel.

These are his drawings, unearthed by archaeologists near Novgorod, Russia #history

Looking for people who know something about early computing, especially in the Netherlands. Please boost and help me solve the mystery of this custom made plate that used to belong to my grandfather Bram Jan Loopstra, one of the pioneers of Dutch computing. What do the pictures mean? #computing #history

Fission is in the news, but few recognize that a woman physicist was behind the discovery.

Lise Meitner’s brilliance led to the discovery of nuclear fission. But her long time collaborator Otto Hahn, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry w/o her in 1944, even though she had given the first theoretical explanation.

Albert Einstein called Meitner “our Marie Curie." She also adamantly refused to work on the atomic bomb during WWII. aps.org/publications/apsnews/2… #women #history #science #energy

A court in Germany on Tuesday convicted a 97-year-old woman of being an accessory to murder in over 10,000 cases for her role as a secretary to the commandant of the German Nazi concentration camp Stutthof during World War II.

Irmgard Furchner was accused of being part of the apparatus that helped the camp function. The Itzehoe state court in northern Germany gave her a two-year suspended sentence.

Kamoinge is a group of black Photographers who formed in 1963.
Their mission statement: "Honour, document, preserve, & represent the history & culture of the African Diaspora with integrity & respect for humanity through the lens of Black Photographers"
This wonderful work is important to counterbalance the whitewashing of #History by mainly white, middle-class historians/reporters throughout time.

Thomas Wiggins was blind & #autistic #AfricanAmerican born into slavery who became a virtuosic pianist & composer.
He also had remarkable memory & mimicry skills. He was not only able to memorize & play back complex musical pieces but to imitate animal sounds & entire conversations.
Athough exploited by his owner he was one of the most celebrated Blk concert performers of the 19th c. but is virtually unknown today

Did you know Monopoly was invented by a woman named Elizabeth Magie in 1903?

Originally ‘The Landlord’s Game,’ it was designed as a protest against the big monopolists like Carnegie & Rockefeller.

But it was Charles Darrow, an unemployed salesman, who eventually sold it to Parker Brothers after playing a version.

Parker Brothers credited Monopoly with saving their company. Magie died in 1948 without recognition. Darrow became very wealthy & his legend lives on. #history #women #HistoryRemix

The greatest African scholar of the 16th century, Ahmed Baba.

According to John Henrik Clarke, Ahmed Baba’s life was a brilliant example of the range and depth of West African intellectual activity before the colonial era.

Ahmed Baba was born on Oct. 26, 1556, in Arwán, near Timbuktu, to the teacher, Ahmad bin al-Hajj Ahmad bin Umar bin Muhammed Aqit. He moved to Timbuktu at an early age to study with his father.

Ahmed Baba’s work ranged from biographies to commentaries, and he was one of the most celebrated professors. He was also the last Chancellor at the University of Sankore, Timbuktu. The University of Sankore has been compared to other higher learning institution during Muslim civilisation such as Al-Azhar in Egypt, Al-Qayrawan in Tunisia, Al-Qarawiyyin in Morocco and Qurtuba University in Spain. It also said to be a source of pride amongst African- Caribbean communities worldwide as it was a great intellectual institution dating back to civilisations in Mali, Ghana, and Songhai particularly during the 12th to 16th centuries.

Ahmed Baba strove to bring together the different ethnic groups that coexisted in Timbuktu at the time. For him, ethnic differences were less important than to knowledge. The Moroccans, despite holding Baba in open arrest, also considered him fully-fledged scholar.

Timbuktu’s institute of Higher Learning and Islamic Research, which houses some 30,000 manuscripts and is one of Africa’s most important collections of Islamic scholarly texts and historical chronicles, is named after Ahmed Baba.

Following the 🧵 scholar.social/@andi/108166583…

My project aims to study the role of women within the Global Indigenous Movement #GIM since the foundation of the World Wide Web.

From a transnational perspective, I focus on indigenous women's organizations native to Brazil,
Bolivia, Chile, Mexico, India, Kurdistan and (even) Europe.

I am interested in their online self-representations: the way they make and theorize their own #history.

Hello fellow humans (+machines)!!! Here's an #Introduction

I'm not-new to Mastodon but am a new sprout in scholar.social.

I'm a Global Southerner currently writing a thesis on Indigenous Women's #History.

I consider myself a go-between. As a historian, I'm a cultural mediator in-between past/present. Plus, I'm a translator and wikimedian. I edit scientific knowledge in academia outer-space and love to tackle meanings across languages.

Here I'm engaged in knowledge sharing and other funsies.
