The VOD of part 2 of my GObject deep dive is now up: youtu.be/mnKgMZnCqDk

The lifetime of an object instance, and how to use signals

Warning: There’s an app for blurring out sensitive information in images called Obfuscate being featured on #GNOME Software right now.

Please be careful.

The default blur setting can easily be reversed.

The default should be to replace the areas with a solid colour or a pattern not derived from the underlying information.

This really should not be a featured app in its current state.

To celebrate the fact that I can finally use all the theoretical bandwidth for which I'm paying my ISP, today's stream is going to be a deep dive on GObject—how does it work, and why. If you're interested, tune in at 4pm BST/15:00 UTC on twitch.tv/ebassi

Whoever implemented this security feature in GNOME really didn't think it through. #security #linux #gnome

Today I wrote my first GNOME app with rust. It's called switch and I can toggle a 💡 with it 😃

Special thanks to @ebassi for his ongoing series of video streams, which make it much easier for me to get into GNOME and rust programming.

Is it just me or can’t Fedora Silverblue install Flatpaks downloaded from the web (flatpakref) in GNOME Software?

(This is a valid, decentralised way of distributing software that doesn’t require centralised services like Flathub, etc. and should be supported as a first-class citizen in free and open operating systems.)

My last #introduction was in 2018, so let's update it:

- I'm a free and open source software developer, mainly contributing to the #GNOME ecosystem and software development platform
- I am, through no fault of my own, the maintainer of the GNOME developer documentation website
- I write the occasional app, like Amberol
- I stream my work on Twitch: twitch.tv/ebassi
- I still plan on finishing the History of GNOME podcast
- I build #gundam plastic models
- trans rights are human rights

Tip: if you’re using the new GNOME Console and Fish shell, you don’t have to wait until the GNOME folks have colour schemes implemented if you want to customise yours.

fisher install FabioAntunes/base16-fish-shell

Then, in your console, type base16<tab> to see the list of different colour schemes you can try.

Sadly, the IBus ctrl + . shortcut for inserting emoji also conflicts with GNOME’s ctrl + . shortcut for *drumroll* inserting emoji. So, when GNOME is being used, the distribution should really disable or change the IBus shortcut as GNOME’s graphical emoji picker overlay is far superior to the IBus’s.

Also, I think I’m going to end up changing 1Password’s shortcut as I want to be able to use the GNOME emoji picker popover on web forms too.

As I've had a few new followers, by way of #introduction:

- I'm a free and open source software developer
- I contribute to #gnome, typically in the core platform libraries
- I mostly toot about my History of the GNOME project podcast (every week, on Thursday) and about my #gundam plastic models
- I try to keep my software development ranting to the bird site, but it may end up spilling over here
