The file system is your friend. Mobile #UX has been alinenating users from the file system (so that Big Tech, not the user is in control) and has been dumbing down users to the point that they don't understand the concept of the hierarchical file system anymore. Software (even open source software) increasingly tries to hide the file system from users. Or neglect it. #Gnome and Co. don't even show application icons on the ELF executables. It needs to change. As someone who grew at a time where email was an unquestioned, decentralized foundation of #FreeSoftware workflows, moves like leave a bad taste in my mouth. I understand how Discourse facilitates onboarding, but the idea of delegating to a central server and using the browser as the sole user interface remains unappealing to me.

Dictionary was my first serious #GNOME application; I wrote during the 2.14 development cycle (late 2005) it to replace the old gdict utility that was written for GNOME 1.2 and ported to GNOME 2.0
For my sins, I ended up maintaining the gnome-utils package starting with GNOME 2.14 (2006), until we split it up for GNOME 3.4 (2012)
As I have worked with colleagues that primarily use them and having used Discourse for a long time, I would assure them that email replies work well. I hope they'll stay active and I'd expect the community to get a little closer.
So this gives an example to for other projects to move forward too.
So remember how I was saying you shouldn’t have to know or care if your operating system is immutable for an immutable operating system to be usable by everyday folks? (You know, clever folks, like brain surgeons and astronauts, not just your regular garden variety tech hobbyist with time to spare following instructions from a wiki.)
Seems others think so too… #VanillaOS sounds very promising. #Fedora #Silverblue folks should take some notes.
