If anybody makes a strong “100%” claim on accessibility or security, or claims to fully—or even mostly—automate compliance:

Do not walk away.

Run away.

#DisabilityIN The Evinced CEO referred to the W3C ARIA Authoring Practices Working Group as one of the three pillars of creating accessible content. Using it can guarantee “100% accessibility”.

in reply to Seirdy

a single technology automatically making it possible to guarantee “100% accessibility” is at least as ridiculous as a single technology guaranteeing 100% security. This doesn’t just apply to automation/overlays; it applies to every technology used on any nontrivial project.

Replacing the word “accessibility” with “security” and vice versa is a good bullshit detector for marketing material.

A Lisp REPL kind of works for the first.

Assuming you can implement the method you need.

Ultimately, nothing short of allowing the user to remake the entirety of the program's human-interaction layer to their liking will provide 100% accessibility.

Microsoft’s CAO discussed one challenge of #accessibility is non-practitioners creating accessible content. She talked about advances in tooling to solve that, using this slide.

Right now, the most important question to me is, if someone is free to answer, how is David doing?
in reply to David Goldfield

@DavidGoldfield i saw him post on this topic yesterday. He was very thankful for all the support. He said he's on the road to recovery. I'll check and see if there's any further updates.

Recently, user Jordan shared a small but meaningful experience made possible with #NVDA: "When NVDA by NV Access reads alt text from your favourite #restaurant menu, now I just found a new #dessert I want to try! Thanks to NVDA, my day is getting off to a perfect start."

If, like me, you've put off upgrading from a gas range to an induction electric range, I have some fantastic news. In most of America, you can now pre-order a battery-equipped range, which just sips from your normal household outlet, and can work during a power outage. #ElectrifyEverything

PyGObject, the #Python bindings for #GTK, have recently merged support for asynchronous programming, closing an orthogonality gap between Python's async support and GTK having been single-threaded / event based since forever: gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/pygobje…
This ends a decade of using projects such as gbulb that kindly bridged that gap.

I'm not sure he is on the fediverse, but huge kudos to long time GNOME contributor Benjamin Berg for this. This is such an amazing gift that he has worked on for the last couple of years and it really levels up PyGObject. 🤩 #Python #GNOME

Ooooh, nice! 🤩 I preordered the same one and I'm so excited for it... Btw, I got the Thunderbird nebula update today and it looks so damn good! 👌 Thank you for your work on it!

Seriously though, I don't think a model that could classify between uspol and non-uspol with a really good precision and decent recall (which is what you want here) would be that big.

If you did batching, and you could actually do batching on Masto if you were to accept a few seconds of extra federation delay, I think this would actually work and be cheap-ish to run.

We guess you've seen our calls for UX/UI pros. But why, you ask? Well, this is the challenge in front of us: fit all of the below into the player screen, while keeping it clean & usable!
📜 Transcripts
💭 Comments
🔢 Chapter titles
📋 Bookmarks with notes
💤 Sleep timer indication
👛 Donations to podcasters

We're soon meeting with the designers who'll hopefully make this happen!

@niavy
Ok. Thanks for letting us know ^^
(Yes, we're not the fastest with implementing changes. That's because we work with a huge community while focussing on code quality. But as you can see from our efforts here, we do care for an appealing UI.
Also, our podcast search database is bigger: way more than the 2 million that Focus Podcast reports to have. But yes, our search is sub-optimal. Maybe that causes the wrong impression.)
in reply to AntennaPod

I purchased a new tablet two weeks ago and installed @AntennaPod for the first time. So far I'm really, really happy¹. Previously I used Rhythmbox on the desktop.

I'm still exploring² the UI and only found one thing missing: The podcast name in the queue list. Yes, there is the logo on the left, but I prefer text over images. On my screen is enough space. This might be a problem on other devices.

¹ Adjusting a podcast volume is so wonderful.
² I just discovered the chapter marks.

Me: how about you stop hoarding customer data to sell?

Okay, #Emacs users, does anyone still use Helm? Gonna get back into it, and setup is kinda different, so yeah. I loved it though when I had it working last time.
in reply to Devin Prater :blind:

@Devin Prater :blind: Perhaps emacspeak has some code to handle helm auto completions. I think with speechd-el I did not managed to use it properly. Or that might be just me not being clever enough. I'll try looking into it again.

Man. I wish there would be some sort of blog or site or mastodon account which tells you things about #linux normal people would never tell you.
I got this server, and 1 week later, people just came up with, oh yeah, change your ssh port, disable the root user, add this to this group and do this and na you can't store files in /home...
Okay dude, tell me how to do it different. I hate it. I wish there would be actually readable, good tutorials how to setup a server so it is and stays stable. And does not ends up in a mess.

in reply to Jonathan

No need to change your ssh port if you have a firewall (standard on most distributions) that blocks access to that port to only some address you know.

No need to disable the root user, really.

Groups should be good by default.

No reason not to store files in /home just keep your permissions in tact.

But if you want to learn how to run a server get a book like the “Linux Server cookbook” or Learn “Linux System administration”.

Generative AI can't do basic math and will gaslight you about it.

Every single story about #Trump "doing well" or "getting a victory" (because a judge he appointed dismissed a case, for example) is intended to dissuade you from voting.

Ask yourself this question: "Does this story about Trump or Biden make me feel hopeless because it seems obvious Trump is going to win?"

Oh, it does? Who benefits from your hopelessness?

You know what's improved a lot from web browsing since the 90s or 2000s in terms of screen reading? The ability for them to keep internal focus in-sync with page keyboard focus, and placing cursor position back on the page or tab where it was last left off when interacting with it. I recall how much of an issue this was for a long, long time - even just switching between two browser windows could often reset your internal screen reader cursor's position. Sometimes, things do get better.
in reply to Tamas G

I think the thing where the page refreshed and sent you back to the start or some random point is also a bit better, though oddly I've been seeing it get worse lately on some sites.
