In OS 8 we kept the Classic Session as default with the option to try a Secure Session. Since then we’ve released updates fixing issues, app developers have updated, and hardware makers have fixed issues in their drivers. The Secure Session now provides a better experience for most people and supports a broader range of modern hardware
In OS 8.1, the Secure Session is now the default session, with the option to fall back to the Classic Session if you still need it
Password authentication dialogs have a new feature in a Secure Session: when opened, the rest of the screen will dim and other windows won’t be allowed to steal focus. This prevents accidentally typing your password anywhere other than the authentication dialog and you’ll be able to make sure these are legitimate system dialogs and not an application trying to read your password
When we ran our desktop survey 75% of you told us that you expected to see background apps in the Dock, so we now have support for the Background Portal!
You can always manage app permissions in System Settings → Applications and choose which apps are allowed to run in the background
We’ve brought the workspace switcher up from the Multitasking View directly into the Dock. You can press the “+” tile to open new workspaces or select an existing workspace to switch to it, drag-n-drop to rearrange workspaces and, clicking on a workspace that’s already open will show the Multitasking View
In AppCenter we now show a simple percentage-based app rating when ratings are available from ODRS—the same ratings server used by apps like GNOME Software. When developers provide screenshots for multiple platforms, we now show you the ones intended for elementary OS. We’ve added support for app addons, and we now show when a game supports playing with controllers
This year @zersiax joined us again for another round of accessibility testing. Installer views should all have much improved accessible labels. Thanks to this feedback, OS 8.1 can be installed and set up completely blind in most cases.
Thanks to feedback from @fireborn, Notifications and the Shortcut Overlay both added screen reader support. We’ve also improved screen reader labels in Calendar, In System Settings → Firmware updates, and in AppCenter to name a few cases.
In System Settings → Keyboard → Shortcuts → Custom you can now choose from a list of installed apps and their actions—in addition to being able to execute custom commands. This makes it super straightforward to add a keyboard shortcut for your most common workflows like composing a new email or adding a new Calendar event. Plus System Settings will also now warn you if your desired keyboard shortcut conflicts with a common system shortcut like "Copy", "Paste", or "New Tab"
For the first time we now also offer ARM64 builds for devices that boot with UEFI. This means you'll be able to run OS 8.1 on M-series Apple Silicon and devices where you can load UEFI-supporting firmware like Raspberry Pi. OS 8.1 introduces a blur-behind effect for translucent desktop elements like the Dock, Notifications, and the Alt + Tab window switcher. This not only looks nice but helps visually separate these elements from applications while maintaining legibility
Quick Settings added a new page where you can see which other people are logged in and quickly switch between accounts. Plus, we added a new "Prevent Sleep" toggle. This is useful when you're giving a presentation or have a long-running background task where you want to temporarily avoid letting the computer go to sleep on its normal schedule.
A system monitor app has been one of the top requested default app additions for quite some time, and we now ship with one!
We’re also now shipping Maps, which currently covers the basics like Explore and Transit maps, showing your current location, searching for locations, and handling `geo://` uri links. Plus Application settings now has a setting to select your default Maps app.

Sad to hear that Chris Rea passed away today. I haven't heard Driving Home for Christmas yet this year, so I'm dusting off a cover I wrote and recorded a few years ago on a fundraiser album. This version is what might happen if a blind person decided to drive home for Crimbo, with everything you're hearing being done by actual blind people. Well, everything apart from the driving (didn't have the budget for a car or good lawyers).
Credits: David Eagle did the lead vocal. My guy Dwight Brady did the angry drivers/traumatic adlibs, was also the tiny child at the end. @technowitch was the police dispatcher. Ché Martin was the swat team commander. Satauna Howery was the news reader near the end. Dwight again on drums. I do actualy have a Motability car which my wife drives (can't think why they won't let me). I've had plenty of dreams where I'm driving it and everything's going just fine until I remember I'm blind. lol
Garmin “Autoland” aka “Safe Return,” has been used for the first time, successfully.
Autoland is an emergency system, where a passenger can hit a big red button if the pilot is in incapacitated, which causes the airplane to make emergency radio calls, navigate to a nearby airport with a long runway and medical facilities, and conduct an instrument approach and landing, followed by a full shutdown when the aircraft comes to a stop on the runway. Large screens and voice announcements keep passengers updated along the way.

I've recently returned to using Mutt to manage most of my incoming mail, especially the various mailing lists to which I subscribe. Major reasons for this include (1) its comprehensive set of keyboard commands; (2) the option to control sort order in detail, including threads (in my case, oldest message first); (3) focus handling, e.g., placed automatically on the first unread message; and (4) support for using your preferred text editor to write messages. The main disadvantage is that HTML messages aren't presented as well as they would be in a client based on a Web browser engine. Have you ever tried Aerc? Also, what screen reader are you using with Mutt? In the case of Fenrir, as far as I have tried, you cannot be that productive when switching between the message list and the message content reader. Aerc seems better, as you can use w3m to read messages, and the arrow keys work the same as in a text editor.
@clv1 I am yet to try erc. Mutt works well with Orca in a terminal. I have enabled the braille_friendly option, which automatically places the cursor on the first line of body text when reading a message. I can then simply use flat review to read.

When the European Commission approached us about funding a bug bounty for BIND 9, we were impressed with the proposal. We have a policy against bug bounties (because we were frustrated with people wasting our time), but under this proposal, the YesWeHack team would do initial triage, and use their expertise to minimize the 'slop' reports. This is a game-changer for a small development team.

@Tutanota iOS app - is it new that when I mark my emails and click "move" then the folders are suddenly presented in reverse order? Previously the "Inbox" was first and then it was my custom folders below. Now all my custom folders appear on top and in reverse order. It's kinda annoying, can you please make it like it used to be? --max-filesize will not even start the transfer if it knows that file size will be beyond the limit. if file size is not known, the transfer will start, but abort once limit is reached. what would be somewhat iseful is an option to allow fetching until limit also if size is in advance known to be larger than limit.
